DePauw AD Stevie Baker-Watson joins D3.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2023 NACDA Convention. The two discuss some of the pressing issues that Division III is facing and how she is preparing and urging her colleagues to lean into change and investigate solutions to serve the student-athletes. She also discusses national issues she’s tracking on the Division I level and how that translates to DIII. “There’s any number of us that have been talking about budgets, staffing and facilities here. I think those are pretty common, but a lot of us are feeling the pinch at our institutions about how we are going to make ends meet. We're seeing escalating costs and things that we really can't control: what our buses are costing, our hotels, our food and we're trying to balance that with what the student experience is looking like on the other end of things. Nationally folks are starting to pay more attention to what's happening at the other divisions. When we went through the Constitution Committee work, there was this idea that maybe what was happening in Division I wasn't going to perhaps touch the other divisions and now we're seeing more communications coming into our office. We're seeing more things that if we're not paying attention we're going to be asleep at the wheel and we're going to have somebody else be making decisions on our behalf.” Full conversation on Connect. Northwestern-St. Paul Football HC/DIII FB National Committee Chair Matt Moore joins the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast ahead of this past weekend about the postseason selection process. Moore states that, per the criteria, results are defined as “a win is a win” and when looking at wins against regionally-ranked opponents the rank of said teams are not considered. He goes on to note the importance of being consistent with Regional Advisory Committees (RACs) and the national committee to rank teams based on the primary, and if necessary secondary, criteria, with the national committee having the ability to alter regional rankings to maintain that consistency. On strength of schedule: “You put your conference in a bind when you don’t play outside the conference. […] I think teams have realized that that SOS matters, and that if you have an opportunity, especially if you're in a conference that maybe isn't going to be as strong or isn't going to be as looked at as strong, if you have an opportunity to raise your strength of schedule by playing a top caliber team is it better to lose to a top team than to beat somebody who's gonna lower your schedule.” Moore points to PairWise as an item to look forward to in the future, adding: “Sports will be able to figure out what the criteria will be for that. So it's not something that I think is going to be dropped right onto a sport or dropped right onto Division III athletics in one fell swoop right away. It's going to be something that will probably be worked in conjunction with RACs and with national committees, and they'll develop what they want the criteria to be. So as you're talking about across the country, all these things, probably not going to be a big monster in Division III.” Lots more in the full conversation. (link)

While NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt acknowledges women’s basketball has the “greatest value” among the championship rights bundled in the NCAA’s media rights package with ESPN, former ESPN VP of Programming and Acquisitions Carol Stiff worries about what that will mean for the other sports in the bundle. “I’m not in favor of breaking up the bundle. Not only do you have the crown jewel in women’s basketball, but look at the growth of the other sports – softball, volleyball, gymnastics. All of that comes into play. And not just women’s sports either – look at what the NCAA and ESPN have done together in baseball and lacrosse, just to name a couple. This is about assigning a value for comparison purposes – the value for the whole is much stronger together. Let’s say you take women’s basketball out of it and those rights go somewhere else besides ESPN, what happens then? Who’s going to do for those championships what ESPN has done, not just in the championships, but in the regular season as well. Do not undervalue the thousands of hours produced on ABC/ESPN networks.” (link)

Bethel (MN) Football HC Steve Johnson, the winningest active DIII FB HC, will retire at the end of this season, concluding 35 seasons at the helm. AD Greg Peterson: "I have had the honor of working with Coach J in some capacity since the fall of 1989...student-athlete, various assistant coach roles, and now as the athletic director. There are not adequate words to describe Coach J's impact on the student-athletes he has coached, the football program, the athletic department, and all of Bethel University. What he did with the football program is indescribable. Going from a program that won a total of 14 games in the entire decade prior to him coming, to one that is annually among the top in the country. As astounding as his on-field success is, it pales in comparison to the transformational life impact he has had on the young men he has coached.” (link)

Well this is an eye-opener: The U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 4.9% during the third quarter despite interest rates reaching their highest level in the last 22 years. The growth was well above the Q2’s 2.1% pace and faster than economists’ expectations of a 4.3% rate. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: “It’s a good, strong number and it shows an economy that’s doing very well. Let’s remember that it is just one quarter’s number and I’m not expecting growth at that pace to continue,” particularly in the face of the resumption of student loan repayments and soaring bond yields.
