Oregon AD Rob Mullens joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast to discuss what it’s like to serve as chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, the transition to the Big Ten and more. Mullens explains that committee members have access to a sports analytics database “and you, the committee member, can decide what data points are important to you. I had a specific set that I would get downloaded, sorted and able to review. And it has to be manageable, right? You also get an understanding from the data analytics company what statistics correlate to the highest level of success, but again, it’s up to you, the committee member, to use the data, that you want.” Mullens also discusses the challenges facing college athletics and notes the “amount of resources that are poured into student-athlete success. When you look here at the University of Oregon, student-athletes, before their scholarship, receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $150-175K of support, whether that's free tutoring, mental health support, sports medicine, nutrition – the whole system that's put around them is is intended to allow them to have success. What I get concerned about is a lot of these conversations become about economics and the visible sports that are creating economics. My biggest concern is somehow the system isn’t able to support broad-based programming.” Full podcast. (link)

AL.com’s Matt Cohen chronicles Auburn AD John Cohen’s first year on the job, and Cohen’s wife, Nelle, talks about the decision to leave Mississippi State for The Plains. “This is the kind of job he’d be crazy not to take it. I have people saying, ‘But you’d have to move. You’re moving and that’s such a hassle and you have this great house that you built and you love it there and you have your friends.’ There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Do you know us? Do you know my husband?’ He loves a challenge.” Right out of the gate, Cohen was faced with the potential tenure-defining moment of hiring a new football HC, and he says his philosophy can often drive those around him crazy because he keeps revisiting the same issues repeatedly from different angles as he learns more. “I love beating it to death until I have a moment of clarity.” Cohen also describes a feeling of liberation that he couldn’t enjoy in Starkville, where he was more recognizable: “I never felt like I could be seen on the golf course. I never felt like I could be seen enjoying fishing or enjoy myself because they’d be saying, ‘Holy cow you didn’t win a national championship last year, what are you doing playing golf?’ That’s how my mind works. Until last month, I was just telling someone this, I hadn’t hit a golf ball in 23 years.” More from Cohen. (link)

More fallout over the changes to the NIT selection process, as Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade tells The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil she’s “shocked. And my take is not really related to the event itself, to the NIT. My concern is a bigger picture concern: You have the NCAA leadership making a public declaration that six conferences are going to be treated preferentially, and in a protected class for access to a postseason NCAA event. That doesn’t seem fair.’’ O’Neil adds: “The dirty little secret no one in college hoops likes to admit to is that, as much as fans love Cinderella, ultimately they prefer name brands. Last year’s NIT Championship game between UAB and North Texas averaged 370K viewers, down 63% from the Xavier-Texas A&M title game a year earlier, according to Sports Media Watch. It was the lowest-viewed audience for an NIT title game in 12 years.” Additionally, NIT decision-makers likely felt pressure from Fox’s recently announced postseason tournament, particularly as the NCAA prepares to renegotiate its NIT (and women’s basketball) deal with ESPN. AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco acknowledges this isn’t “the end of the world” and adds: “But more than that, the camaraderie within the NCAA seems to be fraying considerably. This does not help. It does not help at all.’’ (link)

Central Michigan is investigating “photos that show a man resembling Michigan Wolverines (football) staff member Connor Stalions on its sideline for the Sept. 1 opener at Michigan State,” according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Adam Rittenberg, who add: “Photos obtained by ESPN show a man wearing sunglasses – during a night game – and holding a possible play sheet. The man, who was standing near offensive line coach Tavita Thompson and CMU director of recruiting Michael McGee for much of the game, was shown by FS1 cameras several times during the game broadcast and appeared to shield his face any time a play ended near where he was standing.” The individual also wore a “VB” (visitors’ bench) credential. Chippewas AD Amy Folan: "We are in the process of determining the facts surrounding them. As this process is ongoing, we have no further comment at this time." (link)

Rhode Island has launched a $20M fundraising campaign to support upgrades to several facilities. The philanthropic contributions will be paired with $65.8M in the Rhode Island Capital Plan funding included in the 2024 state budget. The campaign will initially focus on longstanding issues with Meade Stadium, Tootell Aquatic Center, the outdoor track and field facilities, the baseball and softball fields, and the soccer complex. Rams AD Thorr Bjorn: “We need facilities that stand out among our peers to give every student-athlete the best chance to succeed and to allow our coaches to recruit top talent to URI. I know the passion is there from our alumni, fans, and friends—we now have a unique chance to work together to make big things happen.” (link)

Northwestern has submitted a draft agreement proposal to the City of Evanston in which the university would commit $100M to support city services and programs over 10 years. As part of the proposal, Northwestern would guarantee $2M in annual tax revenues to the city, driven by and assuming concert events occur at Ryan Field. The school would also guarantee $500K annually to the two Evanston school districts supported by a ticket surcharge on all concert tickets at Ryan Field. NU Senior Executive Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations Dale Davis: “From the very beginning, our stadium design prioritized community feedback and was designed to be a community hub of fun and positive activity for our neighbors and the broader Evanston community. Our proposed agreement is an extension of those efforts.” (link)

What transpired off the field is not reflective of what Morgan State University stands for or the core values it upholds. Our student-athletes are committed to behaving in a manner consistent with the expectations at the National Treasure.” (link)
