Viterbo will exit the North Star to join the CCAC as the league's 12th full member, starting in 2024-25. AD Barry Fried: "The CCAC is a great fit for our university and our athletics department. It is a well-known NAIA conference with many schools similar to Viterbo in terms of mission, size and overall profile. Sport offerings, long-term stability and student-athlete experience were also key factors in pursuing membership." (link)

Heart of America Commissioner Lori Thomas will step down after nine years leading the league to pursue a new opportunity. MidAmerica Nazarene President/Council of Presidents Chair David Spittal: “Lori has provided exceptional leadership during her years of service. Her vision for the Heart has inspired our members to adopt high standards of excellence on behalf of our student-athletes.” Comprehensive Athletics Consulting will assist the league with its search for a new commissioner. NSIC (NCAA DII) representatives spent the latter part of last week on the campus of Jamestown as the league explores adding a 16th member. UJ President Polly Peterson says the third DII invite may be the charm: “If you want to go way back we’ve been preparing for a time when we would be ready and when Upper Iowa left we said this is the time, we’ve done what we needed to do. We’ve invested in our programs and our facility and our coaching staff and our transportation." Commissioner Erin Lind: "In my position, I have the opportunity to talk with leaders of all the other Division II conferences in the country. And in our talks, I hear often about their struggles. And when I hear about the struggles of smaller conferences, it's about scheduling and resources and all the issues that might arise because you're a smaller conference. I don't think that's a place our league wants to go.” (link, link) 

Dakota State announces phase 2 of its major facilities plan with plans for an indoor inflatable dome practice facility thanks to a $7M lead donation from T. Denny Sanford. AD Jeff Dittman: “Phase II is a huge step forward for our athletics department. An indoor facility, such as a dome, will be a tremendous training aid for multiple DSU sports as well as providing a competition venue for various high school and youth sports tournaments. It will also be a competition center for DSU and girl’s high school softball programs throughout the region in the spring. These teams that travel to Madison to practice or compete will provide a strong benefit to the community businesses as well.” The facility could be online as early as late 2025. (link)

Point Park rolls out its Pioneer Vision 2030 strategic plan, with one of its six strategic initiatives being to add sports. The plan calls for the Pioneers to add Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Tennis and Wrestling, while increasing enrollment 30% by 2030 and growing the endowment to $50M. President Chris Brussalis says the university plans to launch a capital campaign to fund these initiatives, adding: “This is truly transformational. There’s an opportunity for us that, in being in the city of Pittsburgh, we are the Downtown university. … Downtown is the future and becomes the center of arts, entertainment and recreation. And that’s what we are. That’s our sweet spot. We feel that Point Park can be the catalyst for Renaissance III in Downtown Pittsburgh.” (link)

Rochester will add Men’s Volleyball starting next year under the leadership of Women’s Volleyball HC Juliana Nash. Warriors AD Clayton Bissett: “We have seen the progression of our women's volleyball program under Coach Nash's direction this year and are anticipating the same growth with our new men's program under her leadership.” (link)

With Flag Football set to take the field at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the sport’s popularity continues to grow, with the Colorado High School Athletic Association exploring sanctioning Women’s Flag FB as it heads into year two of its pilot program with over 50 schools participating. One major supporter of the growth in Colorado is the Denver Broncos, whose foundation is providing financial aid to all participating schools. (link)

Union Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Burton is no longer leading the Bulldogs after 11 seasons. AD Tim Curry, who previously served as Women’s Basketball HC, is serving as Interim MBB HC. (link, link)

+ Union will change from college to university designation as it explores a new name that will be approved no later than this spring. (link)

+ Incoming NAIA member Defiance will reduce its tuition rate 25% starting next year to $28,500, hoping to decrease the sticker shock for prospective students. As part of this plan, the college is also rolling out its DC Advantage Plan which “Guarantees loan repayment for students, graduates who get a job who make less than $45,000 a year.” (link)

The U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 4.9% during the third quarter despite interest rates reaching their highest level in the last 22 years. The growth was well above the Q2’s 2.1% pace and faster than economists’ expectations of a 4.3% rate. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: “It’s a good, strong number and it shows an economy that’s doing very well. Let’s remember that it is just one quarter’s number and I’m not expecting growth at that pace to continue,” particularly in the face of the resumption of student loan repayments and soaring bond yields.
