Ohio State tops the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, followed by Georgia, Michigan and Florida State. Washington, Oregon, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss round out the top 10. (link); NC State AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan on the Buckeyes at No. 1: “The win against Penn State, to win at Notre Dame, the win at Wisconsin – they've proven they can do it at home, they've proven they can do it on the road. They have explosive plays. Down a receiver, Marvin Harrison, Jr., who's clearly one of the top players in the country. As we look at it, as we evaluate it, it is part of the overall evaluation, but a top 5 defense that's given up about 10 points a game really does play into it, as well.” Corrigan also said the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan didn’t factor into the rankings because “that’s an NCAA issue. It’s not a CFP issue.” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock added: “You have to remember that these are allegations at this point and not facts, and so there's no substantive evidence that anything happened that might have affected the game. All this committee does is evaluate what happens on the field during games. That's why we are where we are.” Asked whether Michigan AD Warde Manuel’s inclusion on the committee undermines its credibility, Hancock responded: “It just wasn't an issue. Warde brought credibility when he came to the committee, and he still had it and still has it, and as Boo and I both said, he was fully engaged today. It’s just not an issue here.” More from Hancock and Corrigan. (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd catches up with former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and former Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson, both of whom helped build the expanded College Football Playoff format, to get their thoughts on how it will impact the sport starting next year. Bowlsby still contends that on November 1 of a given season, there will be 30-35 teams in contention for the 12 spots. “They may not all be legitimate contenders, but there will be people saying, 'We got a chance.' I think the number holds water. It's going to be a vastly different environment.” Thompson adds: “The interest is going to peak up even more. Whether Bob's right on [with] 30-35, which I think will be fairly accurate, it's going to be, 'By golly, my team didn't make the championship game of my conference, but we only had two losses. My 10-2 team is a heck of a lot better than your 11-1 team.'” Dodd goes on to point out the new CFP will introduce Cinderellas to a sport which has “stubbornly stiff-armed” them over the years. He also wonders whether coaches on the hot seat will be given more grace just by having their teams in the mix. Florida AD Scott Stricklin adds: "Every AD is going to be watching really closely these first two or three years of the 12-team playoff to see what direction the committee goes. If they pick shiny records that may not have been through as tough a schedule over teams that have challenged themselves more in the nonconference, it's going to dictate how teams schedule." More. The NCAA is investing around $500K in a social media campaign to promote and highlight the growth of women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, cross country and FCS football, SBJ’s Michael Smith and Ben Portnoy report. NCAA SVP for External Affairs Tim Buckley: “For a hefty investment in these championships that haven't seen that type of investment, we’re seeing amazing results. 1,000% increase in engagement, hundreds of percentage points increase in content getting put out -- and that’s in sports that show real potential for growth and expansion.” Specifically, the NCAA has garnered more than 14M views on video content (+1,632% increase over the same period last year); overall social posts for the six sports have grown 987% across all platforms; there has been a 2,500% increase in volleyball posts, leading to a 1,240% increase in net audience growth; and there has been a 1,457% uptick in men’s and women’s soccer posts, leading to a 5,886% increase in net audience growth. Syracuse AD John Wildhack sounds off on NIL, the ACC’s new football scheduling model, the future of Orange Football HC Dino Babers and more. In regards to the football schedule, Wildhack admits he’s glad to be rid of divisions. “In the divisions over a seven-year period we played Clemson and Florida State 14 times because we played them every year. We’ll play them six times over the next seven years.” Wildhack also says Louisville and Georgia Tech acknowledging that they don’t have a “must-play” conference opponent each year gave the league the flexibility which will result in better matchups for fans and TV networks. Wildhack stops short of saying the Orange need to make a bowl game for Babers to keep his job but notes: “We have expectations, we have goals, and we’re still in a position where we can achieve those. I also understand the results the last four games have not been satisfactory to anyone, but there's still a lot to play for and now we have to go do it and if we do it everything will take care of itself.” Asked whether a move could be made in-season, Wildhack says he doesn’t want to “get into speculation in terms of success we have or don’t have…again, we’ve got four games left, and it starts on Friday, and I think Friday is a very important game.” Full interview. Coaches Corner…
+ Bestselling author/prominent Michigan observer John U. Bacon reports U-M President Santa Ono, AD Warde Manuel, and the U-M Board of Regents are “currently working to finalize [Football HC Jim] Harbaugh's contract, which will make him the highest paid coach” in the Big Ten. “One sent me this: ‘While UM officials remain concerned about the investigation, long term they believe Harbaugh's overwhelming success at his main missions of winning games and graduating student-athletes has earned him the right to be the highest paid coach in the conference.’” (link)

UCLA Senior Assoc. AD for Sport Administration & Governance Erin Adkins joins Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer to share insights into leading coaching searches, the Bruins’ transition to the Big Ten, gathering and utilizing feedback from student-athletes, NIL and more. Adkins says the biggest difference between NIL now and when it started is the level of aggressiveness. “At this point it’s who can solve the problem the best because that’s what we’re tasked with right now. There’s not a lot of guidance. On campus we are tasked with monitoring, managing and controlling every constituent. So, the people that are going to be more successful in NIL right now are those that can creatively problem solve around the lack of infrastructure.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos talks with Marquel Carter, director of influencer marketing at Nutrabolt, about C4 Energy’s success with NIL endorsements. Carter acknowledges the NIL space was scary for Nutrabolt, which oversees C4, but adds: “I think we’ve spent enough time now to see that there is a return on investment there. It’s starting to level out with just the understanding of where those marketing dollars or budgets for talent lie. I definitely think this space is growing every single day.” The company followed up last year’s deals with former Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud and former Texas RB Bijan Robinson reaching agreements this year with Texas QB Quinn Ewers and USC WR Zachariah Branch. Carter expects that trend to continue: “Our plan, our strategy, is really to be ever-present in this space. Because we are ever-present in this space, you’ll definitely see more from us. We have a partnership that allows us to work with 100 student-athletes a month, in various sports and across the nation. That’s what I’m excited about is us being able to really activate with talent across the whole nation.” (link)

A new study conducted by Wasserman measuring references to keywords across all forms of media from 2018-2023 found women’s sports received 15% of coverage, up from a previous baseline around 5%. Awful Announcing’s Brendon Kleen contextualizes: “Wasserman identified the expansion of leagues and the development of new media as main drivers of this increased attention. Women’s sports are receiving more investment, sponsorship and fan engagement, making these leagues more newsworthy for large media properties. Wasserman looked at linear television broadcasters like ESPN and Fox Sports 1 plus the top four streamers (ESPN+, Paramount+, Prime Video and Peacock) to analyze broadcast trends. The research team also analyzed aggregator social media accounts on Twitter (now X), TikTok, Instagram and Facebook as well. In addition, they combed digital news publications.” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens joins the Canzano & Wilner podcast to discuss what it’s like to serve as chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, the transition to the Big Ten and more. Mullens explains that committee members have access to a sports analytics database “and you, the committee member, can decide what data points are important to you. I had a specific set that I would get downloaded, sorted and able to review. And it has to be manageable, right? You also get an understanding from the data analytics company what statistics correlate to the highest level of success, but again, it’s up to you, the committee member, to use the data, that you want.” Mullens also discusses the challenges facing college athletics and notes the “amount of resources that are poured into student-athlete success. When you look here at the University of Oregon, student-athletes, before their scholarship, receive somewhere in the neighborhood of $150-175K of support, whether that's free tutoring, mental health support, sports medicine, nutrition – the whole system that's put around them is is intended to allow them to have success. What I get concerned about is a lot of these conversations become about economics and the visible sports that are creating economics. My biggest concern is somehow the system isn’t able to support broad-based programming.” Full podcast. (link)

AL.com’s Matt Cohen chronicles Auburn AD John Cohen’s first year on the job, and Cohen’s wife, Nelle, talks about the decision to leave Mississippi State for The Plains. “This is the kind of job he’d be crazy not to take it. I have people saying, ‘But you’d have to move. You’re moving and that’s such a hassle and you have this great house that you built and you love it there and you have your friends.’ There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Do you know us? Do you know my husband?’ He loves a challenge.” Right out of the gate, Cohen was faced with the potential tenure-defining moment of hiring a new football HC, and he says his philosophy can often drive those around him crazy because he keeps revisiting the same issues repeatedly from different angles as he learns more. “I love beating it to death until I have a moment of clarity.” Cohen also describes a feeling of liberation that he couldn’t enjoy in Starkville, where he was more recognizable: “I never felt like I could be seen on the golf course. I never felt like I could be seen enjoying fishing or enjoy myself because they’d be saying, ‘Holy cow you didn’t win a national championship last year, what are you doing playing golf?’ That’s how my mind works. Until last month, I was just telling someone this, I hadn’t hit a golf ball in 23 years.” More from Cohen. (link)

More fallout over the changes to the NIT selection process, as Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade tells The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil she’s “shocked. And my take is not really related to the event itself, to the NIT. My concern is a bigger picture concern: You have the NCAA leadership making a public declaration that six conferences are going to be treated preferentially, and in a protected class for access to a postseason NCAA event. That doesn’t seem fair.’’ O’Neil adds: “The dirty little secret no one in college hoops likes to admit to is that, as much as fans love Cinderella, ultimately they prefer name brands. Last year’s NIT Championship game between UAB and North Texas averaged 370K viewers, down 63% from the Xavier-Texas A&M title game a year earlier, according to Sports Media Watch. It was the lowest-viewed audience for an NIT title game in 12 years.” Additionally, NIT decision-makers likely felt pressure from Fox’s recently announced postseason tournament, particularly as the NCAA prepares to renegotiate its NIT (and women’s basketball) deal with ESPN. AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco acknowledges this isn’t “the end of the world” and adds: “But more than that, the camaraderie within the NCAA seems to be fraying considerably. This does not help. It does not help at all.’’ (link)

Central Michigan is investigating “photos that show a man resembling Michigan Wolverines (football) staff member Connor Stalions on its sideline for the Sept. 1 opener at Michigan State,” according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Adam Rittenberg, who add: “Photos obtained by ESPN show a man wearing sunglasses – during a night game – and holding a possible play sheet. The man, who was standing near offensive line coach Tavita Thompson and CMU director of recruiting Michael McGee for much of the game, was shown by FS1 cameras several times during the game broadcast and appeared to shield his face any time a play ended near where he was standing.” The individual also wore a “VB” (visitors’ bench) credential. Chippewas AD Amy Folan: "We are in the process of determining the facts surrounding them. As this process is ongoing, we have no further comment at this time." (link)

Rhode Island has launched a $20M fundraising campaign to support upgrades to several facilities. The philanthropic contributions will be paired with $65.8M in the Rhode Island Capital Plan funding included in the 2024 state budget. The campaign will initially focus on longstanding issues with Meade Stadium, Tootell Aquatic Center, the outdoor track and field facilities, the baseball and softball fields, and the soccer complex. Rams AD Thorr Bjorn: “We need facilities that stand out among our peers to give every student-athlete the best chance to succeed and to allow our coaches to recruit top talent to URI. Northwestern has submitted a draft agreement proposal to the City of Evanston in which the university would commit $100M to support city services and programs over 10 years. As part of the proposal, Northwestern would guarantee $2M in annual tax revenues to the city, driven by and assuming concert events occur at Ryan Field. The school would also guarantee $500K annually to the two Evanston school districts supported by a ticket surcharge on all concert tickets at Ryan Field. NU Senior Executive Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations Dale Davis: “From the very beginning, our stadium design prioritized community feedback and was designed to be a community hub of fun and positive activity for our neighbors and the broader Evanston community. Our proposed agreement is an extension of those efforts.” (link)
