I am especially proud of the extraordinary achievements of our scholar-athletes and coaches.” (link)

NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt says the NIT Board of Managers will look at the NIT qualifications and selection process again after the media rights agreement expires after this season, and there could be changes again to how the teams are chosen, per The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman, who adds: “Basically what he's saying is that these changes were a financial decision from the NCAA.” In fact, per CBS’ Matt Norlander, Gavitt acknowledges the “viability of the event could be in jeopardy.” Gavitt says of a potential Fox-run 16-team tournament: “Unequivocally, this event was going to happen in 2024 and was going to happen on two different occasions over the summer." Norlander: “That's the impetus for this NIT change to give 12 auto bids for '24. The Fox-run event isn't a done deal yet.” Gavitt also insists changes to the NIT do not portend changes to the NCAA Tournament and adds: “Just because the NCAA ended up purchasing and operating the NIT the past 20 years, there’s not necessarily an obligation to run a postseason tournament other than the NCAA championship. In some ways, I think this situation begs an interesting question about whether the NCAA should be in the postseason tournament business altogether outside the NCAA championship. … The NCAA’s participation in [the postseason] beyond the NCAA championship is not mandated, and, at times, I question whether it’s viable.” (link, link)

On3’s Pete Nakos reports that 28 DI conferences have formed the Coalition for the Future of College Athletics (C4FCA) to make the case to Congress for a federal NIL standard. The coalition, led by the Power 5 commissioners, has issued a wishlist of items it hopes to see in an NIL bill: the elimination of state laws, the creation a level playing field, the prohibition of inducements, the establishment of uniform oversight and enforcement of NIL, and the recognition that athletes are not employees of universities while acknowledging preexisting Title IX requirements.” The coalition states in its release that “will serve as an umbrella for all stakeholders – conferences, universities, student-athletes, alumni, fans and more – as it encourages Congress to pass a uniform, federal NIL standard and secure the future of all college sports.” (link)

Football independence is “not a true option” for Florida State, according to Seminoles AD Michael Alford, who says: “I don’t think it’s an option because of scheduling and everything that comes along with that, and where media contracts are now. But I’m not going to lie to you and say I didn’t spend 10 minutes on it. … I have a great staff that knows that I want to look at things and know what all my options are but also have analytics and not just throw something up there. It needs to have some support behind it so we can look at it.” Alford also notes his relationship with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips remains “great” and that his fellow league members understand he will always advocate for FSU. As Bradley works to permanently cut $13M in spending, faculty members are asking for an analysis of athletic department finances that would include a cost/benefit analysis of remaining in DI or transitioning to DIII. According to a 2021 filing with the IRS, the university subsidized the athletics department to the tune of $7.5M. Executive Director of Media Relations and External Communications Libby Derry says athletics aren't part of an academic assessment but notes the department goes through an annual review to assess operational costs. Derry also says changing NCAA divisions isn't something that would be seriously considered. (link)

The NCAA last week filed a motion to dismiss former USC RB/Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush’s defamation case. In its filing, the NCAA argued: “Bush has spent more than a decade trying to collaterally attack these findings in the court of public opinion. This lawsuit represents his latest effort in that vein, and it stems from an unlikely place – a 2021 statement that does not mention Bush at all. … There was nothing defamatory about the NCAA’s statements in 2021, and the Court should reject Bush’s attempt to use the litigation process to rewrite history.” At issue is the use of the phrase “pay-for-play” in the aforementioned statement, something Bush asserts he was never accused of. The NCAA contends Bush, even though the benefits he received were not directly linked to his choosing USC but rather in exchange for family friend Lloyd Lake representing him in his NFL career, was the recipient of pay-for-play inducements. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports back from Boise and notes that despite a growing budget gap between the Broncos and Power 5 athletic departments, fans are “still very much showing up, opening their wallets, and staying plugged into the program,” even if some are frustrated. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: “I’m very grateful for the Boise State Brand we have, and for that standard. If anything, I think we’ve actually expanded what that standard means for all, not just our football team. It’s what our basketball teams are doing, it’s what everybody is doing.” Meanwhile, despite being in a state without a professional sports team, Dickey tells Brown that Boise State “has to be outbound, and meet people where they are. … We’re going to every community event we possibly can over the summer. If there’s a fair, a concert…we’re there. … I think a big part of our job is to connect appropriately to those that are supporting us, and I want those people to be fanatical. If they’re supporting us, if they’re buying season tickets, if they’re donating…hey, they paid for that opinion. That doesn’t mean I have to like what they say, but if they’re showing up…they have that right.” More. (link)

St. Thomas has nearly completed funding for the $175M Lee and Penny Anderson Arena. In addition to the $75M gift from the Andersons, the school will contribute $44M while the athletic department will provide $56M in funding. Exactly how much still needs to be raised is unclear, but Tommies Senior Assoc. AD for Development Ben Thomas says the university is “much past” where it was in the spring as donor conversations continue. “Our donors are engaged, and I think that says a lot about the school.” (link)

Disney is acquiring Comcast’s 33% stake in Hulu for approximately $8.61B, “representing NBCUniversal’s percentage of the $27.5B guaranteed floor value for Hulu.” Hulu’s equity fair value will be assessed as of September 30, 2023, and Disney will pay NBCU its percentage of the difference between the equity fair value and guaranteed floor value. The Big 12 announces its 16-team scheduling matrix for the 2024-27 football seasons. During the four years, all teams will play one another at least once home and away. Some matchups will occur over three seasons while others take place in all four. Matchups in 2024 that were also played in 2023 will not repeat at the same site. Commissioner Brett Yormark: “In this model, competitive balance and student-athlete wellness was prioritized. Rivalries will be protected and new matchups will be introduced – the excitement and parity this Conference is known for will continue for years to come.” (link); Full matrix. (link)

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Max Olson surveyed 50 FBS coaches to ask about the seriousness of the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan, with 23 rating their severity a 5 on a five-point scale. 16 rated the allegations a 4 and nine rated them a 3. One Pac-12 HC said: “It’s easy to call plays when you know what the defense is. It’s a huge deal that someone went to another game and filmed all their signals. That’s Spygate stuff. They were flying around the country? It’s crazy.” Several seemed to be more upset that they got caught, with a Sun Belt HC remarking: “In some ways, they should be held accountable for just sheer stupidity. They could’ve done this for years and years and never been caught if they’d just been smart about it.” An SEC staffer adds: “My God, what idiots. Doing it is one thing. Getting caught is an entirely other thing.” One coach who rated the allegations a 2 on the severity scale said: “A lot of guys are coward-ing out, acting like they’re at places that haven’t done stuff that’s also crossed the line. Michigan just got caught.” A Big 12 HC who gave a 4 rating decried how the situation is a byproduct of college football’s inertia. “We are employing individuals whose main jobs are to signal or steal signals. The technology is available. All these guys with different-colored shirts and these guys that have these boards up? It’s just a bad look for our sport. We’re always reactive in this sport. This is something we should’ve handled on our own.” More. (link)
