Illinois AD Josh Whitman agrees to a new eight-year contract through June 30, 2031, that would increase his salary to $1.5M annually. UI Chancellor Robert Jones: “Josh Whitman will be the third-longest serving athletic director in the Big Ten Conference by next summer. His thoughtful and decisive leadership has been a critical stabilizing force in both the Big Ten and here at Illinois through one of the most tumultuous and challenging periods in the history of collegiate athletics. This new contract ensures that his voice and vision will continue to guide our athletic programs here at Illinois for many years to come.” From the Illini release: “The contract has the opportunity for two one-year extensions, in summer 2024 and summer 2025, respectively, that could extend the agreement’s end date to June 30, 2033. The contract also reworks Whitman’s buyout provision, providing significant protections for the University against Whitman’s departure.” The UI Board of Trustees will officially consider the extension at a meeting later this month. Big Ten football coaches voiced their frustration with the league regarding its stance on the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan, according to The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and Bruce Feldman, who report that once Wolverines HC Jim Harbaugh left the call, HCs indicated they didn’t feel like Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti was “motivated” to do anything about the situation. One coach tells The Athletic: “There is just a ton of frustration. Look at Jim Harbaugh’s record before this started. The guy was on the hot seat before 2021, and now he’s like the king of college football. … No doubt this all has had a profound effect.” Another Big Ten HC adds: “They (Michigan) have been manipulating the game and cheating the game for two-and-a-half years. To know exactly what the other team is doing, Michigan might as well have been playing with 15 guys on the field. What’s the message the Big Ten is sending now by doing nothing? Win now, pay later? We might as well just send people to (scout) their practices and their games. It doesn’t encourage anybody to follow the rules. It’s just telling them to do the opposite and say, f— it. … The Big Ten is so much more powerful than the NCAA. Why are you just sitting back and doing nothing about this? … When a running back gets hurt against Michigan because they knew exactly what play was coming, will that kid and his family have the ability to sue the Big Ten?” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger talks with several of the main players to get the inside story on the breakup between the SEC and CBS, and former Florida President Bernie Machen explains: “We feel like CBS rode the SEC for a long time. They got away with it. They held us at bay for a dozen years.” CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus believes the “SEC was good for CBS, and CBS was good for the SEC. It’s a good example of how a partnership paid dividends for all involved. I’d like to think we can do similar things with the Big Ten.” SEC Executive Assoc. Commissioner Mark Womack also acknowledges that the landmark agreement was a “turning point in the history of the league, having your own network window every week not shared with other groups.” However, Dellenger notes issues began to arise soon after the league signed a 15-year, $825M extension with CBS, starting with the network’s refusal to offer a pro-rata distribution increase when Texas A&M and Missouri joined the conference in 2012. “It served as the first real fissure between the parties – one that widened as time passed.” McManus argues there was an “exchange of value” in allowing the league to air games in that exclusive afternoon window on the SEC Network. Machen sees it differently. “They just dug their heels in. They would not move. I don’t know why. We thought CBS would fold. We thought they would get competitive. We thought at the end of the contract they’d fear losing us and it would bump.” Lots more from Dellenger on the widening rift and eventual breakup. (link)

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch remarked during today’s earnings call that the sports “market remains healthy. This will be somewhat tempered by postseason baseball, including the conclusion of the World Series last night. You know, I think sometimes you get lucky and you get seven game series with matchups that incite the imagination of a national audience, and sometimes you’re less lucky. So that’s how the cookie crumbles. And so, I think we would like to see more games and we’d like to see, you know, a bit more sort of national excitement around these games. But it is what it is.” Meanwhile, Murdoch indicated that advertisers are “pouring into college football, for tremendous rights and with tremendous appetite, for volume because they can see the value in this audience, and perhaps it’s been underpriced in past years.” He also noted: “We are not interested in at this stage moving premium content away from our cable distribution partners. That would be, I think, a mistake for us and for them. And so due to that, since our last call a quarter ago, we have renewed a number of distribution contracts.” (link)

ESPN Bet will launch on November 14, according to Action Network’s Darren Rovell, who adds: “It is not known exactly how ESPN plans to manage what talent can or cannot promote the app. Its initial ad features anchor Scott Van Pelt, who is well known for his ‘Bad Beats’ segment. Mike Morrison, ESPN’s vice president of sports betting, told Action Network last month that the sportsbook and ESPN’s media operation would remain independent and that the risk room would not be privy to internal conversations on news reporting.” (link)

Army West Point Executive Assoc. AD/SWA Tricia Brandenburg sat down with Connect’s Steph Garcia-Cichosz from the 2023 Women Leaders National Convention to highlight Army’s new strategic plan, the philosophy behind it and why strategic plans play such an integral role. Brandenberg also discusses the newly launched sport administrator mentorship program, conference realignment and the upcoming Army/Navy game being hosted in Boston and more. Brandenburg on the Black Knights’ decision to join the AAC: “It’s weighing it against what we can provide as an independent as an institution that really is a national brand in and of itself. And we have some ability to do some of that on our own but, again, what does that mean for the future of college athletics and where Army West Point sits in the future of Division I athletics and being able to continue to provide that extraordinary Division I experience.” Full interview on Connect. Auburn will begin publicly selling alcohol at athletics events for the first time in school history at the men’s basketball team’s exhibition Wednesday against Auburn-Montgomery (DII), per AL.com’s Matt Cohen, who notes the Tigers are the final SEC team to do so. Beverage options include domestic, craft and imported beers as well as seltzers and canned wine. For now, Auburn will limit alcohol sales to Neville Arena but plans to roll out alcohol sales at Jordan-Hare Stadium in future seasons. (link)

Attendance at San Diego State’s Snapdragon Stadium has been 55% of capacity through five home games, with crowds in the 32,500-seat stadium averaging 18,183, the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kirk Kenney reports. To boost attendance for the remaining games, the Aztecs have several promotions planned, including a recent “Halloween Flash Sale” through which tickets cost $31, and the upcoming Fleet Week SDSU Football Classic, which will honor the U.S. Navy. Attendees will be provided with complimentary parking, tickets and food vouchers. Kenney notes that last year SDSU received “substantial backlash from season ticket holders last season when the Aztecs slashed prices more than 50% on tickets to their last three home games,” so this year the department sent an email to to season ticket holders offering two free tickets to the Fresno State game subject to availability. Chicago State men’s basketball student-athletes Matthew and Ryan Bewley have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA after being ruled ineligible. The Bewleys were the first players to sign with Overtime Elite in May 2021, prior to the legalization of NIL and before OTE added a scholastic option. The NCAA denied their eligibility on those grounds, but they argue in the suit that their situation is identical to that of some of their former classmates and teammates, including Kentucky freshman Rob Dillingham, whose “eligibility was apparently granted based on the NCAA's NIL policy, so the Bewleys are crying foul,” according to Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich, who adds: “Of particular interest, the Bewleys are not only filing suit based on antitrust law (claiming that the NCAA is shutting them out of the college basketball labor market), but also based on Illinois's NIL statute. So…that's fun. … Whether the Bewleys' deals with OTE were, in fact, the ‘same compensation package’ as Dillingham and Stanford's Kanaan Carlyle may be an interesting issue of discussion here. The NCAA's response brief should be enlightening. Timing seems key. The difference between the Bewleys and Dillingham and Carlyle may just be that they signed their deal with OTE before July 1, 2021, and Dillingham and Carlyle didn't. If that's the case...man.” More from Ehrlich. (link)
