In a 90-minute call with Big Ten football coaches and league commissioner Tony Petitti, a “vast majority” of the coaches “expressed their frustrations with the ongoing signal-stealing investigation at Michigan,” according to ESPN. Wolverines HC Jim Harbaugh was on the call for the 60-minute, regularly scheduled portion, but exited before the 30 minute discussion of the NCAA’s investigation into UM. One source to ESPN: “Collectively, the coaches want the Big Ten to act -- right now. What are we waiting on? We know what happened.” (link)

Washington State President Kurt Schulz in a letter to Cougars fans explains that amid all the changes happening inside and outside of Pullman, “we already know a few things. We are not going to spend the same amount of money on athletics that we have for the last decade. We will still be competitive, but it’ll be different than when we had the smallest athletic budget in a Power Five conference. But I want to remind Coug fans that we’ll still have Division I athletics. We’ll still compete for championships and have football Saturdays. We’ll still show up every day on the court and in the classroom. The opponents will be different, and even if we don’t know the future of the Apple Cup, the resolute Cougar spirit hopefully will only grow stronger.” Schulz goes on to posit: “I think most would agree that intercollegiate athletics chasing dollars has become excessive. The problem is that it never stops. … Top-flight collegiate athletics are central to the student experience at WSU. We will not let that change, even if our opponents change.” Full letter. (link)

Former Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany joins the Navigating Sports Business podcast with Navigate Founder AJ Maestas and discusses how several variables factor into major decisions at the conference level. “The commissioner works not in a vacuum, but in a complex environment of presidents who have boards, the athletic director and the coaches and the fan base and the politics of it all. And what you try to do is, given all of those influences, have a plan, get it to be shared as best you can, keep your fingers crossed you're in the right marketplace. Because a lot of the top decisions, they're not 90/10. Everyone acts in retrospect like there's a slam dunk that a person bruises their hand on the rent – these are not slam dunk decisions. They’re not 90/10…but the chances of success are more like 60/40 than they are 90/10. If they are 90/10, they would never come to your desk. They’d be self-executing.” Delany says of NIL: “If the schools are involved in these arrangements – and I think they are at a certain level – they’ve either abdicated control or some of their employees are working to make the collectives operate, then that certainly triggers Title IX. And you could say the NCAA is not insisting on compliance, and you could also say the Department of Education is not insisting on compliance with Title IX because I will bet everything that I have that these dollars that are being distributed are not being distributed pursuant to Title IX.” Lots more from Delany. Tennessee State has unveiled the Tigers Forward strategic plan, which “underscores athletics' integral role in fostering comprehensive student development, advancing educational triumph, and cultivating a sense of community. This plan reinforces TSU's commitment to delivering a transformative educational experience that allies with Allen's core four values – Communication, Trust, Respect, and Performance.” Tigers AD Mikki Allen: “By embracing innovation and leveraging our storied history, we are poised to achieve unprecedented heights while remaining rooted in our origins. This plan lays the groundwork for a future in which our student-athletes excel academically, athletically, and personally." (link)

Cincinnati has expanded its apparel deal with Nike/Jordan Brand, which will now be the Bearcats’ exclusive men’s and women’s basketball apparel provider through June 2029. UC’s initial deal, announced this past summer, was through BSN Sports and expired in June 2025. The extended partnership is directly with Nike and allows UC to purchase $1.75M in apparel at one-third of the cost with a discount of up to $1.1M per year. (link)

The wireless network at Syracuse’s JMA Dome will not be ready for users for the start of the basketball season. The school says equipment delays have pushed back the project, which is now more than a full year behind schedule. JMA COO Andy Adams says JMA’s equipment has been installed, but the process involves a complicated partnership with wireless carriers. JMA’s previous objective was for Verizon to install its equipment by mid-October, with the goal of having the setup ready for AT&T customers in November and T-Mobile customers by either December or the start of the spring semester. It remains unclear how the recent delay will impact those timelines. (link)

+ Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz voices his intention to keep coaching after declining to address the question earlier in the week. “I was not trying to intentionally cause celebration for some people who would love to see me go start a stamp collection or go bird watching or whatever. The intent was to try to steer this thing back to what is important right now. I enjoy coaching. Fortunately, I feel really good. The doctors tell me I’m OK; I hope they’re right. I hope to keep doing this for quite a while. I’ve always loved being here. I’ve been here 34 years now, I like what I do, and most of all I like the young people we’ve had a chance to work with. It was that way in 1981. … So, until they tell me to sit down, I’ll probably keep going.” (link)

Insight Sports Advisors CEO Debbie Spander in an op-ed for Sportico observes that the “NCAA has basked in self-governance for almost 120 years” and asks: “Why does it ‘need’ federal government regulation now, and why does the NCAA believe it deserves any kind of antitrust protection? What the NCAA is lobbying for should be a nonstarter. It should take heed of Sen. John Kennedy’s (R-LA) warning to NCAA President Charlie Baker at the most recent congressional hearing last month: ‘I’d be real careful about inviting Congress to micromanage your business.’” Spander also argues a national NIL database will do nothing to protect athletes, drive deals or inform the NCAA. “The use of uniform NIL contracts is not only a terrible idea, but also not feasible. As a lawyer and an agent, I have negotiated thousands of agreements. Sponsorship, social media marketing, appearance and media deals all require different forms. The same applies to NIL deals. … One form will never cover these and will, in fact, lead to more confusion in the NIL marketplace. And the contents of these agreements are confidential information. The NCAA and its members would be better served by abandoning their efforts on Capitol Hill and focusing on a bilateral solution that respects all stakeholders, including college athletes.” (link)

A group of nine GOP governors this week sent a letter to the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports concerning the NCAA’s transgender student-athlete policy. They write: “Science proves that it is fundamentally unfair for a biological male to compete against a biological female – that does not change when someone declares themselves as being of a different gender. The National Institutes for Health found that there is on average a 10% difference between the top performing males and females in athletic competition. In high-level athletic competition, a 10% difference is massive – and can even be insurmountable. … The reason why is simple: biological men are generally taller, faster, stronger, and have more testosterone than biological women. This puts women, through no fault of their own, at a disadvantage when they are required to compete against a biological male.” Citing a lack of federal action, the governors continue: “It is our responsibility to care for our constituents, and we are doing all we can to protect the fairness of athletics in our states. Now, it is time for the NCAA to do the same and make the best decision for all of your athletes. We strongly encourage you to rewrite your Transgender Student Athlete Policy to protect, preserve, and encourage fairness in women’s athletics.” (link)

Three former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes were found responsible of multiple university sexual misconduct violations, according to an NMSU Office of Institutional Equity notice of determination. KTSM’s Colin Deaver reports Kim Aiken Jr., Doctor Bradley and Deshawndre Washington violated multiple university Title IX policies, including sexual assault and sexual harassment, through a hazing process called, “humbling.” The allegations led to an $8M settlement between NMSU and former players Deuce Benjamin and Shakiru Odunewu and Deuce’s father, William Benjamin, earlier this year. The New Mexico Attorney General’s office is still investigating the case for potential criminal charges. (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Dana Christensen dismissed former Montana Women’s Basketball HC Shannon Schweyen’s sexual discrimination lawsuit against the university. Christensen accepted the university's argument that Schweyen was let go due to the "poor performance of the women’s basketball team, the numerous and serious complaints regarding the unacceptable environment fostered by Schweyen for the student-athletes on her team.” (link)

San Diego AD Bill McGillis is stepping down to pursue other professional opportunities. McGillis explains: “My wife, Margie, and I decided that now is the right time to step away, hit reset and embark on exciting new opportunities that are ahead. I have treasured my seven years at the University of San Diego. USD is a special place with a community of amazing students, faculty, staff and alumni. I will be forever grateful to President Harris, our Board of Trustees, university colleagues, our outstanding Athletics administrative team and an incredible group of head and assistant coaches for the opportunity to serve together in supporting our 400+ scholar-athletes. I am especially proud of the extraordinary achievements of our scholar-athletes and coaches.” (link)

NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt says the NIT Board of Managers will look at the NIT qualifications and selection process again after the media rights agreement expires after this season, and there could be changes again to how the teams are chosen, per The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman, who adds: “Basically what he's saying is that these changes were a financial decision from the NCAA.” In fact, per CBS’ Matt Norlander, Gavitt acknowledges the “viability of the event could be in jeopardy.” Gavitt says of a potential Fox-run 16-team tournament: “Unequivocally, this event was going to happen in 2024 and was going to happen on two different occasions over the summer." Norlander: “That's the impetus for this NIT change to give 12 auto bids for '24. The Fox-run event isn't a done deal yet.” Gavitt also insists changes to the NIT do not portend changes to the NCAA Tournament and adds: “Just because the NCAA ended up purchasing and operating the NIT the past 20 years, there’s not necessarily an obligation to run a postseason tournament other than the NCAA championship. In some ways, I think this situation begs an interesting question about whether the NCAA should be in the postseason tournament business altogether outside the NCAA championship. … The NCAA’s participation in [the postseason] beyond the NCAA championship is not mandated, and, at times, I question whether it’s viable.” (link, link)

On3’s Pete Nakos reports that 28 DI conferences have formed the Coalition for the Future of College Athletics (C4FCA) to make the case to Congress for a federal NIL standard. The coalition, led by the Power 5 commissioners, has issued a wishlist of items it hopes to see in an NIL bill: the elimination of state laws, the creation a level playing field, the prohibition of inducements, the establishment of uniform oversight and enforcement of NIL, and the recognition that athletes are not employees of universities while acknowledging preexisting Title IX requirements.” The coalition states in its release that “will serve as an umbrella for all stakeholders – conferences, universities, student-athletes, alumni, fans and more – as it encourages Congress to pass a uniform, federal NIL standard and secure the future of all college sports.” (link)

Football independence is “not a true option” for Florida State, according to Seminoles AD Michael Alford, who says: “I don’t think it’s an option because of scheduling and everything that comes along with that, and where media contracts are now. But I’m not going to lie to you and say I didn’t spend 10 minutes on it. … I have a great staff that knows that I want to look at things and know what all my options are but also have analytics and not just throw something up there. It needs to have some support behind it so we can look at it.” Alford also notes his relationship with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips remains “great” and that his fellow league members understand he will always advocate for FSU. As Bradley works to permanently cut $13M in spending, faculty members are asking for an analysis of athletic department finances that would include a cost/benefit analysis of remaining in DI or transitioning to DIII. According to a 2021 filing with the IRS, the university subsidized the athletics department to the tune of $7.5M. Executive Director of Media Relations and External Communications Libby Derry says athletics aren't part of an academic assessment but notes the department goes through an annual review to assess operational costs. Derry also says changing NCAA divisions isn't something that would be seriously considered. (link)

The NCAA last week filed a motion to dismiss former USC RB/Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush’s defamation case. In its filing, the NCAA argued: “Bush has spent more than a decade trying to collaterally attack these findings in the court of public opinion. This lawsuit represents his latest effort in that vein, and it stems from an unlikely place – a 2021 statement that does not mention Bush at all. … There was nothing defamatory about the NCAA’s statements in 2021, and the Court should reject Bush’s attempt to use the litigation process to rewrite history.” At issue is the use of the phrase “pay-for-play” in the aforementioned statement, something Bush asserts he was never accused of. The NCAA contends Bush, even though the benefits he received were not directly linked to his choosing USC but rather in exchange for family friend Lloyd Lake representing him in his NFL career, was the recipient of pay-for-play inducements. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports back from Boise and notes that despite a growing budget gap between the Broncos and Power 5 athletic departments, fans are “still very much showing up, opening their wallets, and staying plugged into the program,” even if some are frustrated. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey: “I’m very grateful for the Boise State Brand we have, and for that standard. If anything, I think we’ve actually expanded what that standard means for all, not just our football team. It’s what our basketball teams are doing, it’s what everybody is doing.” Meanwhile, despite being in a state without a professional sports team, Dickey tells Brown that Boise State “has to be outbound, and meet people where they are. … We’re going to every community event we possibly can over the summer. If there’s a fair, a concert…we’re there. … I think a big part of our job is to connect appropriately to those that are supporting us, and I want those people to be fanatical. If they’re supporting us, if they’re buying season tickets, if they’re donating…hey, they paid for that opinion. That doesn’t mean I have to like what they say, but if they’re showing up…they have that right.” More. (link)

St. Thomas has nearly completed funding for the $175M Lee and Penny Anderson Arena. In addition to the $75M gift from the Andersons, the school will contribute $44M while the athletic department will provide $56M in funding. Exactly how much still needs to be raised is unclear, but Tommies Senior Assoc. AD for Development Ben Thomas says the university is “much past” where it was in the spring as donor conversations continue. “Our donors are engaged, and I think that says a lot about the school.” (link)

The Big 12 announces its 16-team scheduling matrix for the 2024-27 football seasons. During the four years, all teams will play one another at least once home and away. Some matchups will occur over three seasons while others take place in all four. Matchups in 2024 that were also played in 2023 will not repeat at the same site. Commissioner Brett Yormark: “In this model, competitive balance and student-athlete wellness was prioritized. Rivalries will be protected and new matchups will be introduced – the excitement and parity this Conference is known for will continue for years to come.” (link); Full matrix. (link)

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman and Max Olson surveyed 50 FBS coaches to ask about the seriousness of the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan, with 23 rating their severity a 5 on a five-point scale. 16 rated the allegations a 4 and nine rated them a 3. One Pac-12 HC said: “It’s easy to call plays when you know what the defense is. It’s a huge deal that someone went to another game and filmed all their signals. That’s Spygate stuff. They were flying around the country? It’s crazy.” Several seemed to be more upset that they got caught, with a Sun Belt HC remarking: “In some ways, they should be held accountable for just sheer stupidity. They could’ve done this for years and years and never been caught if they’d just been smart about it.” An SEC staffer adds: “My God, what idiots. Doing it is one thing. Getting caught is an entirely other thing.” One coach who rated the allegations a 2 on the severity scale said: “A lot of guys are coward-ing out, acting like they’re at places that haven’t done stuff that’s also crossed the line. Michigan just got caught.” A Big 12 HC who gave a 4 rating decried how the situation is a byproduct of college football’s inertia. “We are employing individuals whose main jobs are to signal or steal signals. The technology is available. All these guys with different-colored shirts and these guys that have these boards up? It’s just a bad look for our sport. We’re always reactive in this sport. This is something we should’ve handled on our own.” More. (link)
