Bethany AD Brian Sansom chats with DingoTalk’s Carlo Guadagnino about his transition from coaching to administration, projects for the Bison and more. Sansom’s transition from Women’s Basketball HC to AD resulted from both his desire to transition for family balance and a search that did not produce a great fit, requiring him to make a call to step away from coaching a little earlier than he would have imagined. Since taking over in summer 2022, he has hired 11 new HCs, adding: “I think we're moving into an era where we just have a lot of young coaches that are really eager to build a program and I think mentoring them to have them understand the other aspects that go into coaching. […] They're a young group so there is a lot of mentoring and a lot of questions that are being asked, which is fine. I'd rather have a coach come in here every 30 minutes than be unsure and not be able to do their job to the level that we want them to.” Next on the facilities docket are replacing the baseball stadium’s 35-year old scoreboard and undertaking a $1M renovation to the fitness center. Bates President Garry Jenkins joined the Bates Bobcast as he is in the midst of his first year leading the college to discuss the value of athletics and priorities. On the latter: “This year is about listening and learning and building relationships. I would say that certainly athletics are really important. Clearly going to be one of my top priorities. I don't really have specifics yet to share. And we're still talking with coaches and the athletic department, to develop plans and a clearer picture of needs. Certainly some students have expressed some requests with their ideas of what's important. And we're going to consider all of those. But I will say this, that athletics, and I mean that broadly, not just our varsity sports, but recreation and wellness and well-being, it's so important. It's so important for our students, it's so important for Bates. So it's something that we need to invest in. It's a key part of our student experience. So I'm excited to do that. I want to make sure that we're as competitive as we can be, that we're attracting the best students that we can. Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody examines the question of what universities owe their donors, an issue that has become particularly relevant as “some megadonors are outraged over institutions’ responses to the Israel-Hamas war.” Increasingly, Moody notes, “big-name donors are making it clear that they want university leaders to act in ways that align with their values – or access to their fortunes will dry up.” However, donor-relations experts maintain such expectations are neither appropriate nor realistic. Philanthropy advisor Doug White: “What does a big check entitle you to from a university or any other organization? It entitles you to a nice thank-you. And when there are conditions attached to the gift, it entitles you to those conditions.” Trinity College (CT) political science professor Isaac Kamola, who studies donor influence in higher ed, notes colleges and universities are increasingly reliant on philanthropic support in the wake of decreased state funding, “meaning that a highly polarizing event like this one can leave them particularly vulnerable to efforts by wealthy individuals to shape campus speech.” (link)

U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have introduced the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would require colleges and universities to educate students about the dangers of hazing and give parents and students more information about which on-campus student organizations have a history of hazing incidents. Higher ed institutions also would have to list hazing incidents in their annual crime reports. Klobuchar: “When parents send their kids away to college, they expect they will get a good education and make new friends. Unfortunately, hazing is a dangerous – and at times deadly – reality, and we must work to end it. Our bipartisan legislation will improve hazing prevention efforts on college campuses as well as reporting of hazing incidents to make sure we have the information we need to stop this abuse and keep students safe.” Similar legislation has been introduced in the House.
