NCAA President Charlie Baker says the speed of the collapse of the Pac-12 “was an enormous surprise to everybody.” He adds, “I certainly believe we’re going to continue to see realignment within college sports. … We’ve got to make sure that student-athletes still have the ability to be students, whatever the alignment looks like. I hate the fact that the Pac- 12 isn’t going to be with us; at least not in its previous form. But at the same time, if you look at almost any other industry, they’ve been reforming and rejiggering themselves for years.” (link)

Arkansas State AD Jeff Purinton joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to reflect on his nearly three decades in athletics, including a 15-year tenure working closely with Alabama Football HC Nick Saban. Purinton and Brown discuss the influence Saban had on Purinton’s leadership philosophy and communication style before diving into the importance of defining expectations, building out a staff and establishing relationships as a new AD. Purinton agrees with the idea that everyone has a say in the culture being built and tells Brown: “You’ve got to let people be involved. I mean, I can't make every decision. I want to know what's going on, but I need our executive team and our coaches to be able to handle things on a daily basis, and you're right, you’ve got to create buy-in.” Purinton notes there is a fine line when it comes to being proud of those who move forward in their careers at other institutions. “You don’t want everybody coming in, being there for six months, then they’re at NACDA interviewing for 17 jobs. I think there has to be a loyalty component, too. And I think you can get that if they know you’re investing in them and you care about where they want to be.” Full interview on ADU. (link)

The latest from Ann Arbor…
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and Austin Meek examine whether the Big Ten will punish Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh and note: “Is the Big Ten certain that the advanced scouting scheme occurred? Can the conference be certain anyone else was involved beyond Stalions? If the league can answer yes to the first question right now, Petitti may choose to act – because that would, theoretically, be clear proof of an NCAA violation. The second question will likely take significantly more time to answer, and Michigan would need a chance to respond to whatever findings may come.” (link)
+ The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb is among those reporting that Michigan will file for an injunction to block any punishment the Big Ten may seek to impose on Harbaugh. Former CNN anchor David Shuster adds: “Friends/contacts in Ann Arbor say [President Ono] and [the Michigan Board of Regents] have an aggressive legal plan ready to go and are confident a judge would grant an injunction blocking [a suspension.] Relatedly, leaders believe [Harbaugh] is telling the truth.” (link)
+ Ohio State Football HC Ryan Day was asked directly about reports he or someone close to him turned Michigan in. Day responded: “Yeah, no, no comments right now.” (link)

As San Diego State prepares to tip off the men’s hoops season today, the Aztecs have “no manual for what happens next to a program that 25 years ago wallowed among the most woebegone in college basketball, that had never been nationally ranked in Division I until 2010, that hadn’t won a game in the Division I NCAA Tournament until 2011, that until last spring had still never defeated a tournament opponent with a better seed, that hadn’t won a tournament game at all since 2015…and suddenly was in the national championship game at Houston’s NRG Stadium,” the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler observes. Brown Asst. Dean of Public Affairs Jerry Logan, who is also co-author of two books on the topic, “The Cinderella Strategy” and “Unbracketed,” tells Zeigler: “The expectations from game one make it feel like you’re in the postseason, but you’re not. It’s a long season. If you hadn’t made that run, not as many people would be paying attention and you’d have 10 or 15 games to sort it out. If you lose on the road to some team that’s going to scrape the bottom of your conference, everyone thinks the sky is falling. And it’s not. It’s hard to win on the road in conference. It just always is. That pressure, once it’s there, it’s really hard for it to go away. And in a way you don’t want it to, because that means you’re losing a lot and people stopped caring.” Aztecs HC Brian Dutcher agrees the team should lean into the pressure and plans to install a huge Final Four logo in the practice gym. “I like to sell accomplishments. I want them to look up there and know they’re good and know how good they can be, and see that every day. … The goal remains to continue to recruit, coach and play at a level that allows us to make a return trip to the Final Four.” (link)

Butler is partnering with the Come To Believe Network to create a new two-year college that will “provide an affordable pathway for historically underserved students who want to pursue education after high school. … Students enrolled in the college can obtain their associate’s degree with no debt or out-of-pocket expenses, and most will have the opportunity to continue at Butler and earn a bachelor’s degree for less than $10,000.” Butler is the third school to partner with CTB, joining Loyola Chicago (2015 partnership) and St. Thomas (MN) (2017 partnership). In case you missed Sunday's email...

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was asked if the House v. NCAA developments from Friday night was bad news: “It certainly wasn’t good news.” (link); Sportico’s Michael McCann on key nuances of what could come next: “The NCAA can file an interlocutory appeal, meaning an appeal of a case before it is decided, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Appellate courts, however, usually reject those appeals on grounds they would rather review a completed case. As the NCAA continues to lobby Congress for passage of a federal bill that would create a federal NIL standard, supply an antitrust exemption and deny employment recognition for college athletes, truly transformative legal controversies are playing out in courts and at federal agencies. Unless the NCAA attempts to settle In Re College Athlete NIL Litigation, as well as Johnson v. NCAA and NLRB petitions involving USC and Dartmouth athletes (and maybe others in the near future), it could be federal judges, rather than NCAA president Charlie Baker or conference commissioners, who decide the future of college sports.” (link)

Ahead of his meeting with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, Michigan President Santa Ono sent an email to Petitti, noting that no program wants to be in the position the Wolverines are in currently, and that he is “deeply concerned” about the allegations, adding that UM is “committed to ethics, integrity and fair play.” Further, Ono urged Petitti to let the NCAA’s investigation play out before imposing discipline. Ono shared the email with the other league chancellors and presidents. The letter, in part: "It's precisely at these times -- when all key facts are not known but others are all too comfortable offering strongly held opinions -- that it is essential for everyone to ensure that investigations are conducted fairly and that conclusions are based on what actually happened. … The reputation and livelihoods of coaches, students, and programs cannot be sacrificed in a rush to judgment, no matter how many and how loudly people protest otherwise. Due process matters. We, as would any other member of the Big10, deserve nothing less. Our students, our coaches, our program -- all are entitled to a fair, deliberate, thoughtful process. We are aware that other representatives of the Big10 are demanding that you take action now, before any meaningful investigation and full consideration of all the evidence. That is not something our conference rules permit. And we both know it is not what any other member would want if allegations were raised against their people or programs.” (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel was asked a number of questions yesterday about the situation: “Y’all can keep asking me all the questions you want. I have no comment.” (link)
|
Minnesota AD Mark Coyle chimes in: “The integrity of the game is the most important thing; we talk about it all the time. The Big Ten has talked about it for over 100 years of existence. There is no doubt the integrity of the game has been compromised.” On the challenge facing Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “This isn’t his first rodeo. I have confidence in him and I’m confident he will do the right thing.” (link)
|
From The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach & Austin Meek: “If (Big Ten Commissioner Tony) Petitti were to act against Michigan, the likeliest penalty is a head coach suspension, multiple sources within the conference said. The NCAA has moved away from penalties that punish players who were not involved in rule-breaking, and it’s hard to imagine the Big Ten would impose a postseason ban for the same reason. It is not clear what the length of a potential suspension for Harbaugh would be. School officials in Ann Arbor and elsewhere in the conference expect clarity in the coming days.” (link)

UC Davis AD Rocko DeLuca Q&As with The Daily Democrat. He covers a wide range of topics, but describes his first couple of years in the big chair: “Taking over in the midst of a pandemic was interesting. We were dealing with a lot that first year and a half. It’s been a really fruitful start. We just launched our strategic plan called Ignite, it kind of lays out our roadmap for the next five years. We’ve got all the tools and a lot of the resources available to be one of the best FCS programs in the country, collectively, and that’s not just football, but with all 25 varsity sports. That’s what we’re working hard to do. Our goal is just to provide benefits back to the institution that we’re proud to be associated with.” (link)

In addition to a $50K bonus for the Beavers seventh win of the season, Oregon State HC Jonathan Smith picks up an automatic one-year extension with the added year scheduled to be worth $5.45M. The Pasadena police report that several of the items stolen from Colorado’s locker room at the Rose Bowl last week have been returned. The suspects are juveniles and the investigation is still ongoing. Earlier this week, Buffs football HC Deion Sanders: “All that stuff should be replaced. This is the Rose Bowl. They say the Granddaddy of them all, right? I’m sure Granddaddy has some money. Grandpa should have some money to give these kids.” (link)

Now live on Connect: Texas Assoc. AD for Risk Management and Compliance Services Blake Barlow joins Connect/MBSports’ Matt Banker to share his perspective from serving on the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) Board of Directors before the two discuss navigating state laws, NIL, sports wagering and mental health. When it comes to coaches asking for guidance, Barlow explains that a big part of the job is helping to sift through misinformation. “I think coaches read an article and perceive a state law to read in a certain way, and so really trying to dig into the details with them (in regards to Texas’ state NIL law, which took effect in July) to really help reiterate some of the things that it says as well as what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t necessarily give you all the protections that you might think that you’ve read in the media, for example. So, really trying to help them understand what those nuances are.” (link)

File this under…Live streaming is hard. YouTube has fixed the buffering problems that hampered some NFL games during the 1 PM window last Sunday, Global Head of Media and Sports Partnerships Lori Conkling tells SBJ’s Ben Fischer. "People can have confidence in this Sunday, but it is top of mind for us that we are responsible for delivering the exceptional experience that we have promised to our viewers. So we take that very seriously, and we have done everything possible to ensure it does not happen again.” YouTube declined to answer questions about rebates for customers affected by the problems.
