CCAA Commissioner Cox will retire at the end of the academic year, concluding his five-year tenure leading the conference. SAC Commissioner Britz sits down with Connect/MB Sport’s Banker at the 2023 NCAA Convention to get a pulse on key DII issues from the SAC’s perspective, such as mental health resources for student-athletes as well as coaches and administrators, championship access and the regional model. “The regional model has been very good for Division II, it’s sort of what we’re based on, but there might be a few sports that we might need to look outside the box. […] The one thing that really struck me not necessarily from the Implementation Committee, but from the overall Constitution thing was the health and safety of the student-athletes. Obviously that's primary but on the mental health piece, if we're going to task these coaches and administrators to do that, then we've got to help them too. We have to provide them with the resources for it and make sure that their mental health is okay too.” Britz also elaborates on the league’s new strategic plan, with the three initial keys of mental and physical health, DEI and the game-day environment. Fort Lewis adds Indoor T&F for 2023-24, accepts the resignation of Men’s XC/T&F HC Coon and elevates Women’s XC/T&F HC Jakubowski to Men’s and Women’s XC/T&F HC. Jakubowski: “All the other schools in our conference that have outdoor track also sponsor indoor so adding indoor track and field will close the recruiting gap a bit between us and our competition. Extra Points’ Brown profiles Vantage Sports, which specializes in connecting student-athletes with NIL opportunities through coaching, tutoring and camps. One notable facet of Vantage’s plan is that it doesn’t require the student-athlete to have a massive social media following. Co-Founder Johnson explains: “I think it really comes down to leadership and interpersonal skills. You need people who can keep the energy up, who can keep people engaged." For some camps with multiple attendees, student-athletes can earn upwards of $1K, which can be particularly helpful for those not on scholarship. Beyond the money, Johnson explains that “we've seen athletes really benefit from the leadership experience that comes from getting involved in coaching. We think these experiences will help athletes decide if they want to pursue coaching as a career, help bolster their resume, and help them develop real-life skills." (link)

+ With several states ending the year with surpluses, Inside Higher Ed’s Knox explores whether higher ed institutions can expect a boost in funding. The short answer: it depends – largely on the state’s political dynamics and other post-pandemic needs. State Higher Education Executive Officers Association VP for Government Relations Harnisch: “A concern I have is that states will use this opportunity to make sharp reductions in their tax rates, and then as the economy slows down and federal funds disappear, they’ll have deep deficits that result in cuts to state programs, including higher education. There’s going to be a considerable amount of pressure on legislators to provide that broad tax relief.” The chancellors of Texas’ six public university systems are being proactive in advocating for a piece of the state’s $32.7B surplus, promising to freeze tuition if the state will inject around $1B of additional funding into higher ed over the next two years. + A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) finds that working from home saved roughly two hours per week per worker in 2021-22 and will save one hour weekly, post-pandemic, per The Atlantic’s Thompson, who notes that workers from home (WFH) devote 40% of time savings to work (for men, slightly more); 34% to leisure (men, slightly more); and 11% to caregiving (women, slightly more). Thompson adds: “This research team is fantastic, but I will just say that I suspect WFH more reliably leads to increased computer time rather than increased focused work time. + TikTok bans are useless, according to students and experts, as Inside Higher Ed’s Alonso notes cellular data and VPNs make it easy for students to circumvent the restrictions. (link)

+ Microsoft will invest $10B in OpenAI, the AI lab behind ChatGPT, according to the New York Times’ Metz and Weise, who note the news comes less than a week after the company announced it would cut 10K jobs. Microsoft says the changes, including severance packages, ending leases and “changes to our hardware portfolio,” will cost $1.2B. Microsoft has already invested $3B in OpenAI. (link)
