Michigan AD Warde Manuel will not travel to the College Football Playoff Selection Committee meetings in Dallas this week but “instead will stay in Ann Arbor, attending to important matters regarding the ongoing investigation into our football program. I look forward to being back in the room with fellow committee members next week and every week through the end of the season.” (link)

From Action Network’s Brett McMurphy: “Michigan has received notice from the Big Ten indicating specific sign stealing allegations but it does not indicate what penalties would be administered, UM sources said. UM has until Wednesday to respond to Big Ten, source said. The Big Ten’s pursuit of penalties against Michigan and/or Jim Harbaugh is viewed as a ‘PR stunt’ in response to public pressure & in light of the conference’s lack of action up to this point, source said. UM will legally fight any disciplinary actions, which potentially would block any suspensions from occurring this season, sources said.” (link)

The NCAA is investigating the identity of a man resembling former Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions on the Central Michigan sideline this season. Chippewas AD Amy Folan in a statement to ESPN has confirmed that CMU continues to “review the matter in cooperation with the NCAA.” ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg notes the “NCAA's involvement likely will extend the timeline for the investigative process and any potential discipline. Its findings could be included in a larger notice of allegations for Michigan, which has yet to be sent.” Meanwhile, Michigan State Department of Computer Science and Engineering professor Anil Jain, a “nationally recognized facial recognition expert,” tells ESPN it’s highly likely that Stalions is, in fact, the man on the CMU sideline. A state-of-the-art commercial facial recognition system that determines the similarity between two images on a scale of 0 to 1 produced a similarity score of 0.6. Jain: "The reason why it's 0.6 is because there's a disguise. If I take an identical photo, it would be 1.” (link)

More on Underdog & Co’s acquisition of Altius Sports Partners as Underdog co-founder & managing partner Chris Mannix comments: “Ultimately [it’s about] how can we add value and try and be disruptive in the industry, obviously in the NIL space, but also as an integrated company. [...] Casey’s team has this really fast-growing group and we want to add rocket fuel, not mess up something. The last thing we want to do is mess with a great formula. We’re going to say, ‘How can we help?’ [...] When you think about ways we can add value, you’d certainly look at different customized events and content, whether that’s traditional streaming of social channels. You’re seeing a lot of disruptive young companies doing some really interesting things like that. That’s where we can lean in.” More from SBJ’s Terry Lefton & Michael Smith, including Altius CEO & Founder Casey Altius staying on through 2027 & remaining a shareholder. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken wonders how much longer March Madness can “remain unblemished by the legal and financial cross-currents that are roiling all of college sports,” adding: “If you’ve been paying attention, the signs of trouble are everywhere.” For instance, Wolken observes that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is “increasingly shooting verbal arrows at NCAA governance and committees that he believes are overweight with small school influence, constricting his league’s ability to evolve. This, too, seems like a pretext for the SEC to either run roughshod over the rest of Division I or break away.” Wolken also cites the potential Big East/Big 12/Big Ten postseason tournament on Fox as the type of event that “rarely works in the NCAA’s favor: A tournament run by three conferences in cooperation with their media partner while cutting the middle man − in this case, the NCAA − right out of the loop. What does that sound like? It’s basically the template for the College Football Playoff.” More from Wolken. (link)

80% of Power 5 schools now sell alcohol in the public areas of their stadiums on game days, according to an AP survey. Of the schools that don’t, some sell alcoholic drinks in nonpublic areas of the venue such as suites. Wisconsin is one of the schools that does not sell alcohol at football games, but the Badgers will begin selling it at basketball and hockey games this season. Deputy AD Mitchell Pinta: "If our fan experience metrics increase, then it certainly warrants a conversation. ‘Hey, we did this at Kohl Center [and] LaBahn Arena. What would it take? What will it look like? Is that something we want to do at Camp Randall?'" (link)

Now less than a month out from the opening of the football transfer portal, On3’s Pete Nakos observes there are fewer people “hitting the panic button” than last year, and one collective leader believes the amount of money available is likely to be smaller than last season. “Obviously some players will go in to chase a bag of cash, but the leading factor for an athlete’s decision to leave is to play immediately.” The shortened window should also mitigate the congestion, as one SEC collective operator points out: “I don’t think it’s going to be chaos. But that top 10%, depending on the quality of talent, will still be able to drive the market.” Meanwhile, a Big Ten personnel director posits the number of players looking to transfer could “dip a little bit based on the sheer amount of portal entries we had last year. I haven’t been hearing it’s going to be quiet or busy.” (link)

Former Ole Miss/LSU Football HC Ed Orgeron has partnered with activewear firm Rhoback in an exclusive deal that includes a marketing campaign in which Orgeron appears as the company’s interim CEO. The video has already garnered over 1.5M impressions on X (formerly Twitter) and has been viewed 1.6M times on Instagram. Rhoback brand manager Will Lawler praises Coach O’s enthusiasm, saying: “The second we ended one scene and we were good it was on to the next — no wasted time. You can envision how he ran his practices and his locker room. It was high energy the entire time, fully engaged, and he made an effort to go around and connect with everyone in the office.” Rhoback has also secured NIL deals with Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, Ohio State QB Kyle McCord, Notre Dame RB Audric Estime and several others, and Lawler says of the company’s NIL strategy: “We’re able to form relationships with some of the best athletes in the country prior to them turning pro; we’re able to associate ourselves with some of the most loyal fan bases in the country; and we’re able to create awesome content as a result.” (link)

Northern Iowa has been awarded $1M by the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors to support renovations to the UNI-Dome. Panthers AD David Harris: "We have said from the beginning that the UNI-Dome is a multi-purpose facility that brings visitors to the Cedar Valley. Those visitors have a significant economic impact on our community on an annual basis. The Board was able to recognize how an investment in this project is an investment in the continued vitality of our region. Their support will help make this vision a reality." (link)

Additionally, there will be general flooring rehabilitation and the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the facility. Exterior work includes roof replacement, roof anchor installation, and the expansion of roof drainage systems. Meanwhile, the building envelope will be sealed, and fire-rated coatings will be applied to the existing steel roof structures to enhance fire resistance. The NBA and Diamond Sports have agreed to a one-year deal that “essentially guarantees that the Bally Sports RSNs will continue to carry NBA games through the end of this season,” SBJ’s John Ourand reports, adding that the NHL is expected to cut a similar deal in the weeks to come. “The NBA likes this deal because it gives the league more flexibility as Diamond tries to navigate its way through bankruptcy. Regardless of the current length of some of the NBA teams’ Bally Sports deals, all are set to end after this season. A statement from Diamond reads, in part: “Upon Court approval, these agreements will enable Diamond to continue delivering live game broadcasts to fans throughout the 2023-24 NBA, NHL and MLB seasons. Diamond has been broadcasting NBA and NHL games and will continue to do so while the Court considers our motions, and while discussions with the NHL finalize with respect to their own new deal.” (link)
