Legends will acquire venue management company ASM Global, per Sportico's Brendan Coffey, who adds "Terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed, though finance industry publication Private Equity Insights reported in September that a consortium of lenders including Ares Management and KKR were seeking to provide Legends $1.85 billion in financing for the acquisition. While the deal came together in recent weeks, it won’t be official until a regulatory review is concluded, likely pushing the close into the first quarter of 2024." Legends CEO Shervin Mirhashemi: “If you look at the complementary capabilities, Legends is going to be able to support our clients down the road, from project conception and planning all the way to venue development. We can then do the management content, event booking, revenue strategies and sales execution, and then merchandising and hospitality services. It really will be a well-rounded platform. Obviously there are some very formidable competitors in this collective space, but we really believe that we are going to be best in class.” (link)

Columbus Business First’s Amanda Tonoli reflects on Ohio State AD Gene Smith’s career and legacy, and UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, a Gene Smith protege, says of the former: “He combines empathy, leadership, business acumen and intelligence – especially emotional intelligence. He’s respected. When he speaks, everybody listens.” Meanwhile, Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke, a fellow Smith protege, says of the latter: “I’m really proud to be one of his branches, but it wasn’t by chance. He invested in me and challenged me to think about what I want to do and how and where I want my career to go. His greatest legacy is the relationships he has with people and the people he’s been able to put in other positions of leadership.” As far as who will succeed Smith, Lyke says the Buckeyes won’t have a problem attracting high-quality candidates. “Ohio State is a place that attracts excellence, so I think it’s going to attract an exceptional leader. And I would say that Gene has set it up for extraordinary success. I’m sure he’ll always be a source to whoever has that opportunity.” More. (link)

JMU Puts Its Dukes Up…
+ James Madison yesterday sent the NCAA Board of Directors a letter requesting relief from NCAA legislation to allow full bowl eligibility for the undefeated Dukes this season. In the letter, the Dukes list several reasons supporting their request, including this year’s 9-0 mark, a 15-3 record against FBS competition over the past two years and status as the highest-rated Group of 5 team in the AP, Coaches, SP+ and other polls and metrics. Also: “We have won every major university-wide academic award in the Sun Belt Conference since joining last year.” The Dukes also argue that, “most importantly, relief is warranted as a matter of student-athlete welfare. The membership recognizes postseason participation as a fundamental element of the student-athlete experience. If relief is provided, our student-athletes would potentially have the rare opportunity to participate in a prestigious New Year’s Six bowl contest. Our team includes a cohort of students who have been through COVID disruptions, missed out on earned opportunities last year and face uncertain prospects for postseason play again this year despite their sustained excellence.” Full letter. (link)
+ Dukes AD Jeff Bourne on a media call says JMU hopes to hear back from the NCAA within the next week, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini. Asked by the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel whether the team would be pushing this hard if it were 6-3 rather than 9-0, Bourne says it’s a good question but “winning at this level, the way we have, accentuates the preparedness for where we are and I think it adds significantly to our case." Bourne also points out that if relief is granted, the Sun Belt has agreed to let JMU play in the conference championship game. The pressure the NCAA faced in regards to the UNC WR Tez Walker situation wasn’t the main factor, but Bourne acknowledges it did play a role in the Dukes’ strategy. (link, link)
+ Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer reports that “while it won’t help the Dukes this month, I’m told reclassification is going to be a topic of discussion at the NCAA Convention in January and there’s been some chatter already about the potential for teams that meet certain benchmarks getting early access to the postseason/championships.” (link)
+ From The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach: “JMU has also provided resume data comparing itself to other teams in contention for the Group of 5 New Year's Six bowl spot (that shows how JMU would probably be considered the favorite to earn it right now, if eligible).” Visual breakdown included. (link)
+ The NCAA says in a statement that it has received the request and that it will be considered by the appropriate membership committees in a timely manner. (link)

Northwestern State AD Kevin Bostian explains the decision to cancel the remainder of the football season was not made lightly and included input from “multiple meetings, multiple conversations with student-athletes, multiple conversations with all the experts, our athletic trainers, our coaches, and at the end of the day, that's what led us to make sure we had the number one priority for us was our student athletes.” Bostian also says the school is in the process of petitioning the NCAA to grant waivers for players eligibility. Georgia Tech has launched Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2, which has a goal of raising $2.5M in new gifts to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund by Dec. 31. Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Foundation will match eligible gifts dollar-for-dollar for a potential impact of $5M for Tech athletics. Yellow Jackets AD J Batt: “The leadership and continued alignment with President Ángel Cabrera continues to be an essential accelerant to our goal of providing our student-athletes with an excellent experience athletically and academically. The overwhelming support of last year’s Competitive Drive Initiative has already begun to have an impact and we look forward to building on that success as we launch CDI Turn 2.” (link)

Coastal Carolina has expanded its relationship with RealResponse in a campus-wide deal. Chanticleers Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Enhancement/SWA Cari Rosiek approached VP for Student Affairs Yvonne Hernandez Friedman with the idea, citing RealResponse’s anonymity and immediacy in helping navigate fraught situations with a handful of student-athletes within the Athletic Department. Friedman: “Our hope is that by implementing RealResponse, with its anonymous communications capability, students now have a tool to turn to with comfort and confidence when they need help or advice whether for themselves or others.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self has signed a new amended 5-year rolling contract that makes him the highest-paid college basketball coach in the country, according to The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman, who reports the deal is worth $53M over five years. (link)
+ Michigan Women’s Basketball HC Kim Barnes Arico agreed to an extension through the 2027-28 season. The deal includes an automatic one-year extension each June so long as she remains in the job. (link)
+ Washington State Football HC Jake Dickert says the Cougars are “not even competitive in some aspects of the NIL,” adding: “In recruiting, these kids tell you what they’re getting. Oregon State probably has us by 10x. Arizona has us by 20x. USC, Washington, Oregon – who even knows?” Dickert describes the upcoming December 4 transfer portal opening as “open-target season” on WSU players, many of whom he believes will receive lucrative NIL offers from other programs. The Wazzu-focused Cougar collective is on day 50 of a $100K campaign for which it has raised $96K, per the Spokesman-Review’s Greg Woods. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson and Pat Forde have obtained copies of two single-page documents listing detailed breakdowns of Michigan’s signals that were deciphered by other Big Ten programs and shared with at least one upcoming Wolverines opponent, according to a former Big Ten AC. Johnson and Forde note the information on the documents has been “partially redacted because the Wolverines still run many of the same plays or use the same signals, a source familiar with Michigan’s play calls said. A source familiar with the contents of the documents verified their authenticity. The two Michigan signal breakdowns include sections devoted to deciphering the boards held up by staffers with images on them, lengthy lists describing hand signals for running plays, slightly shorter lists for passing plays and separate lists describing signals for play-action passes or bootleg plays. [...] A Michigan source confirmed that the signals described corresponded to their 2022 play calls.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down Michigan’s legal options in the event that the Big Ten penalizes the school over sign-stealing allegations. McCann first notes the Wolverines’ options are “limited” but not “non-existent.” Specifically, the “school (and Harbaugh) could petition a Michigan court for a temporary restraining order (TRO). A TRO would bar the Big Ten from imposing a suspension until there is a fuller record of evidence and law—which would likely take weeks to accumulate—at which point a more lasting court order, a preliminary injunction, could be considered.” Among the key questions that would be considered in a TRO hearing is why the punishment is being levied now when the NCAA is apparently still investigating the matter. Also: “Has the NCAA or Big Ten previously confronted impermissible scouting and sign stealing and, if so, what did they do about it? If they only issued a warning or took no action at all, why is Michigan being treated more harshly? How have the NCAA and Big Ten gone about obtaining evidence and interviewing witnesses? There are major hurdles for private entities in conducting investigations. Witnesses aren’t under oath, so they can be more likely to lie or omit information.” Based on those questions, the court will weigh four factors: Michigan must show it is likely to succeed on the merits of its claims; it must show it would suffer irreparable harm without a TRO; it must must the balance of equities favors an injunction over no injunction; and it must assert an injunction is in the public interest.” More. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman examines how the Big Ten plans to capitalize on record volleyball and women’s basketball ratings, and COO Kerry Kenny explains how the league is being intentional about working symbiotically with football and other sports. ““I go back to the point about not competing with football but working and understanding football as the viewership monster in the fall that it is. Volleyball has really been a sport where we could identify those pockets of the openings in the schedule from a TV programming perspective to understand where is the best place to place these matchups that are going to move the needle from not just a Big Ten perspective, but a national perspective.” For instance, last month Nebraska and Northwestern were scheduled to play a football game in Lincoln the same day the Huskers’ volleyball team was slated to host Wisconsin. Big Ten and Big Ten Network officials discussed all options in advance to ensure the games weren’t competing against each other. Kenny: “I think they felt very confident about that Nebraska-Northwestern game being a game that BTN would air and that they would work strategically to have that at 3:30 (ET) so that we could lead into that Nebraska-Wisconsin game.” Speaking more broadly, Kenny says it’s a “really healthy TV environment for women’s sports right now. At the Big Ten, we’re very proud to be at the forefront of that.” (link)

Populous is doubling the size of its NYC office to more than 10,000 square feet. Senior Principal Jonathan Mallie: “Regardless of financial strength of position, we’ve been really expanding beyond sports. There are all types of entertainment facilities, live music venues, hospitality, sports-anchored mixed-use development, and this is core to our mission. We’ve been on a growth trajectory for a while; it’s maybe more exponential right now.” (link)
