Ohio State once again tops the College Football Playoff rankings, followed by Georgia, Michigan, Florida State, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss and Penn State in the top 10, respectively. (link); NC State AD/CFP Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan on the Buckeyes remaining at No. 1, cites the “win over Rutgers, a top-20 defense, put up 28 points, another seven on a pick six, TreVeyon Henderson being back for his second game, the win over Penn State, the win over Notre Dame, the win at Wisconsin, seven wins over teams with winning records really drove the day.” Meanwhile, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock fielded a question on Michigan and if their inclusion in the rankings will become a CFP issue, saying: “We are not a governance body, and so we're certainly all aware of the Michigan situation, but it's just not a CFP matter. We will take what we get from the NCAA or from anybody else, and whatever facts are available to those other groups, then we'll consider it. But all we do is rank the teams that are eligible for our games.” (link)

Maized & Confused…
+ Bestselling author/prominent Michigan reporter John U. Bacon reports Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti has been informed that the two programs which fed Purdue Michigan's signals before the 2022 Big Ten title game were Rutgers and Ohio State. “Not clear if rules broken, doesn't directly affect UM's situation, but raises question re: relative competitive advantage. Also FWIW, since some have asked: the person informing Petitti was not a U-Michigan employee but an independent higher-up in college football, who felt Petitti should be ready to respond.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach, Austin Meek and others report that “Michigan has informed the Big Ten and the NCAA that staff members at Ohio State, Rutgers and Purdue shared information about the Wolverines’ signals before the 2022 Big Ten Championship,'' according to a university source who says U-M became aware of the recently revealed documents after the victory over Purdue. The U-M source also tells Auerbach, et al. that the person who shared the documents worked for Purdue last season and indicated the information came from Rutgers and Ohio State. A staffer at another Big Ten program who spends time decoding signals insists there’s nothing wrong with sharing that information with another school but what Stalions is accused of doing is “another level.” Officials at Ohio State did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Spokespeople at Rutgers and Purdue declined to comment. (link)
+ As part of its response to the Big Ten’s notice of potential discipline against Football HC Jim Harbaugh, Michigan will argue that sign-stealing is an NCAA issue rather than a violation of the league’s sportsmanship policy, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who also notes: “Any suspension of Harbaugh will be swiftly met with immediate court action, an injunction or temporary restraining order, a source close to the situation told CBS Sports on Monday. It's not clear whether that assertion is part of Michigan's reply to the Big Ten.” (link)
+ Michigan star RB Blake Corum denies having any business affiliation with former staffer Connor Stalions after images surfaced on social media showing Corum’s name alongside Stalions’ on a Wyoming-based LLC. Corum: "My first time hearing about it was when I went out to practice. First of all, I have no business with him, I don't have any businesses with Connor or anything like that. But I'm glad whoever found it, whoever searched the web, was able to find that, I appreciate you. My attorneys are on it, definitely get that figured out right away, get my name taken off of whatever it is." (link)

Facility Features…
+ Wyoming following the football season will begin its two-phase "Restore the War” project to renovate the West Side of War Memorial Stadium. Supported by $20M in private funding and an investment from the Wyoming Legislature, Phase 1 of the project includes approximately 3,000 new chairback seats with cup holders and increased width and legroom; new bleacher-style seating with increased width and legroom; a new public concourse with added vomitories (entrance/exit points) into the War Memorial Stadium west side stands to improve traffic flow; improved ADA access; newly constructed concession stands, team store and more. Phase 2 will include a “comprehensive renovation of the War Memorial Stadium Media and Broadcast Center.” (link)
+ Iowa is planning a $27.4M renovation to Duane Banks Field, home of the Hawkeyes’ baseball team. The project will increase stadium capacity, improve ADA access and seating and add premium seating opportunities, additional concessions and restrooms. The upgrades also will include a renovated entrance to the stadium. The project is pending approval from the Iowa Board of Regents next week. (link)
+ Kentucky releases a rendering of the Rupp Arena court redesign that will be installed later this year. It will feature the UK logo at midcourt and a contrasting wood stain outline of the State of Kentucky. Designations commemorating longtime equipment manager Bill Keightley (aka “Mr. Wildcat”) and legendary play-by-play broadcaster Cawood Ledford will remain. Have a look. (link)

Butts in Seats…
+ Attendance for UAB football games at Protective Stadium is down slightly YoY from 23,058 to 22,774 despite rave reviews from fans regarding Protective Stadium’s upgrade over Legion Field. Blazers AD Mark Ingram acknowledges, though, that “if you’re a competitor you want to be sold out.” TV contrats, he adds, are great for exposure, “but it makes it easier not to attend games.” Ingram goes on to remark that “we have never tried to get anyone to change their school colors. Birmingham is a place where there are a lot of fans of a lot of different schools. And we just ask everybody, you live here, you can support UAB, too. It’s a Division I program in your backyard.” (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz breaks down the particulars of Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self’s new contract, which increases Self’s buyout to $23.1M, up from $5.41M, should he be let go without cause. Self will earn $9.44M this season, including a $1M signing bonus, moving him ahead of Kentucky HC John Calipari ($8.5M) as the highest-paid public school HC in the country. Self is scheduled to make $8.64M next season, including the $240K that Kansas annually will be paying for Self to have private aircraft time for personal use. The five-year term renews annually, and Self’s pay is scheduled to increase by $200K for the 2025-26 season, $400K for '26-27 and $300K for '27-28. The new contract also specifies KU will not fire Self for cause “due to an infractions matter that arises from the same set of operative facts considered in” the recent IARP decision. Also, Self has agreed to pay up to $1.5M of the university’s costs if the team is placed on probation “due to a major, intentional, significant or repetitive violation of NCAA rules and regulations by (Self) directly." Today on Connect: Longtime men’s hoops official/RefQuest CEO Bo Boroski discusses the officiating landscape, the importance of universities providing baseline support and communication for officials, what impacts recruitment and retention of officials and more with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker. Boroski also addresses the ramifications of conference realignment on officiating and says that while “regionalization seems dead,” the number of opportunities won’t change in DI. “But there's got to be a conversations now if a game fee was all inclusive of expenses and now we add in UCLA, USC, Washington and Oregon, there's more conversations that need to take place because we're not going one-hour flights, we're going four- and five-hour flights and even longer in some cases. … And we can't just have the West Coast people work West Coast games because we know that the perception of that is, ‘Well, you're you're a USC official, you live in California.’ No, we need that Southern California official – if I'm in the Big Ten – to work at Rutgers, to work in Maryland, Indiana, Wisconsin. So, there's going to be significantly more travel on behalf of the officials.” Lots more in the full Q&A. (link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini points out that the cost and performance helmet communication technology are no longer the biggest hurdles for widespread adoption in college football. “But legal questions about how the technology would affect the helmets’ warranty remain a key hold-up. Everyone is concerned who would be liable if someone gets sued over head injuries and there is a third-party device in the helmet. The NFL does its own testing with helmet companies and has a collective bargaining agreement with players, unlike the college game. CoachComm, which produces the coaching headsets for nearly every DI football program, has hired independent testers and found almost no difference in the results with CoachComm’s player system in the helmets; however, owner Pete Amos tells Vannini that manufacturers have yet to budge. “The pressure is growing so greatly that some teams are considering doing it anyway because they’re tired of waiting. They all want to experiment with the technology to make sure it’s worth making the helmet people do it.” Another on-field communication option is wearable technology, such as wristbands or belt screens, which Vannini explains are less expensive and would bypass liability concerns. As such, one FBS administrator says such wearables may be the more likely option for tests during next month’s bowl games. More from Vannini. (link)

Legends will acquire venue management company ASM Global, per Sportico's Brendan Coffey, who adds "Terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed, though finance industry publication Private Equity Insights reported in September that a consortium of lenders including Ares Management and KKR were seeking to provide Legends $1.85 billion in financing for the acquisition. While the deal came together in recent weeks, it won’t be official until a regulatory review is concluded, likely pushing the close into the first quarter of 2024." Legends CEO Shervin Mirhashemi: “If you look at the complementary capabilities, Legends is going to be able to support our clients down the road, from project conception and planning all the way to venue development. We can then do the management content, event booking, revenue strategies and sales execution, and then merchandising and hospitality services. It really will be a well-rounded platform. Obviously there are some very formidable competitors in this collective space, but we really believe that we are going to be best in class.” (link)

Columbus Business First’s Amanda Tonoli reflects on Ohio State AD Gene Smith’s career and legacy, and UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, a Gene Smith protege, says of the former: “He combines empathy, leadership, business acumen and intelligence – especially emotional intelligence. He’s respected. When he speaks, everybody listens.” Meanwhile, Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke, a fellow Smith protege, says of the latter: “I’m really proud to be one of his branches, but it wasn’t by chance. He invested in me and challenged me to think about what I want to do and how and where I want my career to go. His greatest legacy is the relationships he has with people and the people he’s been able to put in other positions of leadership.” As far as who will succeed Smith, Lyke says the Buckeyes won’t have a problem attracting high-quality candidates. “Ohio State is a place that attracts excellence, so I think it’s going to attract an exceptional leader. And I would say that Gene has set it up for extraordinary success. I’m sure he’ll always be a source to whoever has that opportunity.” More. (link)

JMU Puts Its Dukes Up…
+ James Madison yesterday sent the NCAA Board of Directors a letter requesting relief from NCAA legislation to allow full bowl eligibility for the undefeated Dukes this season. In the letter, the Dukes list several reasons supporting their request, including this year’s 9-0 mark, a 15-3 record against FBS competition over the past two years and status as the highest-rated Group of 5 team in the AP, Coaches, SP+ and other polls and metrics. Also: “We have won every major university-wide academic award in the Sun Belt Conference since joining last year.” The Dukes also argue that, “most importantly, relief is warranted as a matter of student-athlete welfare. The membership recognizes postseason participation as a fundamental element of the student-athlete experience. If relief is provided, our student-athletes would potentially have the rare opportunity to participate in a prestigious New Year’s Six bowl contest. Our team includes a cohort of students who have been through COVID disruptions, missed out on earned opportunities last year and face uncertain prospects for postseason play again this year despite their sustained excellence.” Full letter. (link)
+ Dukes AD Jeff Bourne on a media call says JMU hopes to hear back from the NCAA within the next week, per The Athletic’s Chris Vannini. Asked by the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel whether the team would be pushing this hard if it were 6-3 rather than 9-0, Bourne says it’s a good question but “winning at this level, the way we have, accentuates the preparedness for where we are and I think it adds significantly to our case." Bourne also points out that if relief is granted, the Sun Belt has agreed to let JMU play in the conference championship game. The pressure the NCAA faced in regards to the UNC WR Tez Walker situation wasn’t the main factor, but Bourne acknowledges it did play a role in the Dukes’ strategy. (link, link)
+ Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer reports that “while it won’t help the Dukes this month, I’m told reclassification is going to be a topic of discussion at the NCAA Convention in January and there’s been some chatter already about the potential for teams that meet certain benchmarks getting early access to the postseason/championships.” (link)
+ From The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach: “JMU has also provided resume data comparing itself to other teams in contention for the Group of 5 New Year's Six bowl spot (that shows how JMU would probably be considered the favorite to earn it right now, if eligible).” Visual breakdown included. (link)
+ The NCAA says in a statement that it has received the request and that it will be considered by the appropriate membership committees in a timely manner. (link)

Northwestern State AD Kevin Bostian explains the decision to cancel the remainder of the football season was not made lightly and included input from “multiple meetings, multiple conversations with student-athletes, multiple conversations with all the experts, our athletic trainers, our coaches, and at the end of the day, that's what led us to make sure we had the number one priority for us was our student athletes.” Bostian also says the school is in the process of petitioning the NCAA to grant waivers for players eligibility. Georgia Tech has launched Competitive Drive Initiative Turn 2, which has a goal of raising $2.5M in new gifts to the Alexander-Tharpe Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund by Dec. 31. Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Foundation will match eligible gifts dollar-for-dollar for a potential impact of $5M for Tech athletics. Yellow Jackets AD J Batt: “The leadership and continued alignment with President Ángel Cabrera continues to be an essential accelerant to our goal of providing our student-athletes with an excellent experience athletically and academically. The overwhelming support of last year’s Competitive Drive Initiative has already begun to have an impact and we look forward to building on that success as we launch CDI Turn 2.” (link)

Coastal Carolina has expanded its relationship with RealResponse in a campus-wide deal. Chanticleers Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Enhancement/SWA Cari Rosiek approached VP for Student Affairs Yvonne Hernandez Friedman with the idea, citing RealResponse’s anonymity and immediacy in helping navigate fraught situations with a handful of student-athletes within the Athletic Department. Friedman: “Our hope is that by implementing RealResponse, with its anonymous communications capability, students now have a tool to turn to with comfort and confidence when they need help or advice whether for themselves or others.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self has signed a new amended 5-year rolling contract that makes him the highest-paid college basketball coach in the country, according to The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman, who reports the deal is worth $53M over five years. (link)
+ Michigan Women’s Basketball HC Kim Barnes Arico agreed to an extension through the 2027-28 season. The deal includes an automatic one-year extension each June so long as she remains in the job. (link)
+ Washington State Football HC Jake Dickert says the Cougars are “not even competitive in some aspects of the NIL,” adding: “In recruiting, these kids tell you what they’re getting. Oregon State probably has us by 10x. Arizona has us by 20x. USC, Washington, Oregon – who even knows?” Dickert describes the upcoming December 4 transfer portal opening as “open-target season” on WSU players, many of whom he believes will receive lucrative NIL offers from other programs. The Wazzu-focused Cougar collective is on day 50 of a $100K campaign for which it has raised $96K, per the Spokesman-Review’s Greg Woods. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson and Pat Forde have obtained copies of two single-page documents listing detailed breakdowns of Michigan’s signals that were deciphered by other Big Ten programs and shared with at least one upcoming Wolverines opponent, according to a former Big Ten AC. Johnson and Forde note the information on the documents has been “partially redacted because the Wolverines still run many of the same plays or use the same signals, a source familiar with Michigan’s play calls said. A source familiar with the contents of the documents verified their authenticity. The two Michigan signal breakdowns include sections devoted to deciphering the boards held up by staffers with images on them, lengthy lists describing hand signals for running plays, slightly shorter lists for passing plays and separate lists describing signals for play-action passes or bootleg plays. [...] A Michigan source confirmed that the signals described corresponded to their 2022 play calls.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down Michigan’s legal options in the event that the Big Ten penalizes the school over sign-stealing allegations. McCann first notes the Wolverines’ options are “limited” but not “non-existent.” Specifically, the “school (and Harbaugh) could petition a Michigan court for a temporary restraining order (TRO). A TRO would bar the Big Ten from imposing a suspension until there is a fuller record of evidence and law—which would likely take weeks to accumulate—at which point a more lasting court order, a preliminary injunction, could be considered.” Among the key questions that would be considered in a TRO hearing is why the punishment is being levied now when the NCAA is apparently still investigating the matter. Also: “Has the NCAA or Big Ten previously confronted impermissible scouting and sign stealing and, if so, what did they do about it? If they only issued a warning or took no action at all, why is Michigan being treated more harshly? How have the NCAA and Big Ten gone about obtaining evidence and interviewing witnesses? There are major hurdles for private entities in conducting investigations. Witnesses aren’t under oath, so they can be more likely to lie or omit information.” Based on those questions, the court will weigh four factors: Michigan must show it is likely to succeed on the merits of its claims; it must show it would suffer irreparable harm without a TRO; it must must the balance of equities favors an injunction over no injunction; and it must assert an injunction is in the public interest.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman examines how the Big Ten plans to capitalize on record volleyball and women’s basketball ratings, and COO Kerry Kenny explains how the league is being intentional about working symbiotically with football and other sports. ““I go back to the point about not competing with football but working and understanding football as the viewership monster in the fall that it is. Volleyball has really been a sport where we could identify those pockets of the openings in the schedule from a TV programming perspective to understand where is the best place to place these matchups that are going to move the needle from not just a Big Ten perspective, but a national perspective.” For instance, last month Nebraska and Northwestern were scheduled to play a football game in Lincoln the same day the Huskers’ volleyball team was slated to host Wisconsin. Big Ten and Big Ten Network officials discussed all options in advance to ensure the games weren’t competing against each other. Kenny: “I think they felt very confident about that Nebraska-Northwestern game being a game that BTN would air and that they would work strategically to have that at 3:30 (ET) so that we could lead into that Nebraska-Wisconsin game.” Speaking more broadly, Kenny says it’s a “really healthy TV environment for women’s sports right now. At the Big Ten, we’re very proud to be at the forefront of that.” (link)

Populous is doubling the size of its NYC office to more than 10,000 square feet. Senior Principal Jonathan Mallie: “Regardless of financial strength of position, we’ve been really expanding beyond sports. There are all types of entertainment facilities, live music venues, hospitality, sports-anchored mixed-use development, and this is core to our mission. We’ve been on a growth trajectory for a while; it’s maybe more exponential right now.” (link)
