NCAA President Charlie Baker tells CBS News he continues to worry about sports betting, particularly prop bets and the impact they can have not only on competition, but also the student-athletes. For instance, Baker paints a picture in which friends and classmates could try and compromise a player, saying something like: “What I'd really appreciate is if you could just miss your first couple of free throws this week – it won't affect the outcome of the game, but it would really help me.” The NCAA, Baker says, has been communicating with gaming firms to seek support for legislation that would create a "prohibited bettors list" of individuals who have a history of harassing coaches or players. “The challenge for us is going to be to do everything we can to educate student athletes and schools, so that people get a sense about what they need to do to stay out of trouble. And just as importantly, that if they do engage in some of this activity, it's gonna get discovered and it's gonna get discovered quickly." (link)

Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez joins Former BYU/Virginia Football HC Bronco Mendenhall and Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer on the latest episode of HeadCoachU. Nevarez explains the MWC membership subcommittee’s questions now revolve on whether the league is at the right size. “Previously, I felt like if we lost one school, that would have put us at 11 football, 10 non-football [members], and I thought that was a good-size league. But now I wonder if we're on the small side given what's happening in the environment. So, we are constantly evaluating what number should we be at, how would that impact scheduling and getting teams in the postseason. And then if expansion is in the cards, who should we be looking at?” Nevarez also says she’s not in favor of student-athletes becoming employees but at the same time recognizes the need to increase resources for and enhance the voices of student-athletes. “I feel like we can achieve those things without labeling them employees. … In employment it looks like collective bargaining so they have a seat at the table and can negotiate. In our world it looks like an expanding role in the NCAA and conference government structure.” Nevarez also points out that in college, when a student-athletes makes a “little bit of a knucklehead move,” there are warnings and second chances whereas in employment you “get fired pretty quickly.” Full podcast. In a 10-page response to the Big Ten’s notice of potential disciplinary action, Michigan warns Commissioner Tony Petitti that the “conference should act cautiously when setting precedent given the reality that in-person scouting, collusion among opponents, and other questionable practices may well be far more prevalent than believed.” U-M also warns that any action Petitti takes to suspend HC Jim Harbaugh would exceed his authority and constitute an attempt at “bootstrapping unproven rules violations through the sportsmanship policy.” Harbaugh’s attorney, Tom Mars, also sent a letter to the Big Ten, stating: “When other teams had been legally acquiring Michigan’s signals with 100% accuracy for at least two years by studying Michigan game films, there was no reason for Coach Harbaugh or anyone else to believe that (Stalions) had not acquired his information about other team’s signals by using the same methodology. … It should be self-evident that the Commissioner’s duty is to make sound decisions based on his own principles and those of the Conference and to disregard anyone’s desire for a rush to judgment — especially when they’re motivated by a desire to diminish Michigan’s opportunity to win the Conference and advance to the playoffs.” (link, link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown cites multiple sources who indicate Cobblestone Consulting Group, a firm based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the private investigation agency involved in the Michigan sign-stealing ordeal, and Brown reports Cobblestone has “done various projects with NFL and collegiate-affiliated entities well outside the Big Ten footprint. I was also told that PI investigations into the Michigan sign-stealing operation began well before the start of the 2023 football season.” Also from Brown: “One of the biggest questions remaining in the story is who hired the PI firm in the first place. My answer is…I don’t know. I’ve tried to find out, as have several national reporters I’m friendly with.” More. (link)

While President Joe Biden “did not stake out specific positions on hot-button issues like NIL or whether athletes should be classified as employees and receive regular salaries” during yesterday’s roundtable discussion, Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson reports that “what was originally supposed to be a drop-in during the roundtable by the president ended up being about an hour spent with the players. After engaging them in the roundtable, Biden took them on a 20–30 minute tour of the White House, including the Oval Office.” Former LSU/Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark: “I thought that his attention to what we were saying, and the passion that, whether it was Rod [Gilmore], Desmond [Howard], Kevin [Neghandi] showed for the young student-athletes was amazing. I think it was palpable and tangible in that room, and hopefully something comes of it.” Johnson also offers some notable context by pointing out that “it was the latest in a series of shows of support for the labor movement” for Biden, who “recently threw heavy support behind the United Automobile Workers during their strike, counting their new contracts, with large wage increases, as a political victory.” (link)

Montana AD/FCS Selection Committee Chair Kent Haslam joins the FCS Delivered podcast to offer an inside look at the committee’s process, including why FCS reveals its rankings four weeks before the field is set but not in subsequent weeks leading up to the final bracket. Haslam isn’t sure why FCS moved away from revealing the rankings in multiple weeks and says: “I could foresee there being more reveals … There’s just not a lot of data points to be able to evaluate teams, and so as you move through and you get further on, it does make it much easier. I would like to see maybe one more reveal, two would be great. There’s just so much that moves in FCS. … We don’t get great regional matchups early in the non-conference play, so it gets really difficult to be able to evaluate teams. So, getting further along does help.” Lots more from Haslam. (link)

The DI Council Coordination Committee has adjusted the guidelines for student-athlete reinstatement cases in which student-athletes wager on other teams at their own schools. Effective immediately, reinstatement guidelines for those student-athletes will start at requiring one season of ineligibility and a loss of one year of eligibility. Student-athletes will also be required to participate in sports wagering rules and prevention education as a condition of reinstatement. Previous guidelines for such cases prescribed permanent ineligibility. Furthermore, the adjusted guidelines may be applied to cases in which student-athletes are currently serving suspensions related to wagering on a different team at their own school that were reported on or after May 2, 2023. Disney CEO Bob Iger reiterates ESPN will move to DTC no later than 2025 and says: “We believe we have an opportunity to strengthen that hand even more by bringing in one or two strategic partners that can add either marketing support, technology support or possibly content support. Why not go out with a stronger hand, and that's what we've been considering. We've been in discussions with a number of entities. I don’t have anything specific to tell you right now except I think you can expect us to elaborate more on that sometime in the near future.” (link); Sportico’s Anthony Crupi reports that “ESPN's stateside unit, which accounts for ~90% of Disney's sports $, generated $3.46B in revenue in the quarter that ended on Sept. 30, up 1% YOY vs $3.43B. Domestic operating income was $987M, good for a 16% lift from $850M. ESPN+ growth is slow: 26.0M subs v 25.2M” in August. Meanwhile, ESPN+ did record a $33M profit for the quarter. (link, link, link)

Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee believes a soft landing is still on the table as the Fed seeks to combat inflation without significantly hurting the economy. “Because of some of the strangeness of this moment, there is the possibility of the golden path…that we got inflation down without a recession. If that happened…it would just be a continuation of what we’ve already seen this year, which is unemployment up very modestly, while inflation has come down a lot. That’s our goal.” Goolsbee notes the fast inflation drop occurred in 1982 and says: “We’ll see what happens over the next couple of months. We might equal the fastest dropping inflation in the last century. So we’re making progress on the inflation rate.” (link)

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan says he expects the U.S. economy to execute a soft landing and avoid a recession: “Our research team is the best in the business and they have moved to the soft landing category. They have a slowdown in the economy in the middle of next year.” Specifically, BoA economists predict the U.S. economy will grow 2.7% this year and 0.7% in 2024. (link)

Butler AD Barry Collier announces his retirement, effective April 30, 2024. “When I first stepped onto Butler's campus in the fall of 1974, I immediately felt at home. I loved my time in a Bulldog uniform and competing in Hinkle Fieldhouse. While my coaching career took me around the country for years, my heart was never too far from Indianapolis. In 1989, the opportunity to lead the Butler Bulldog men's basketball program was the fruition of a dream, and my eleven years on the bench were memorable. To be able to return to Butler in 2006 to lead the Department of Athletics has been the icing on the cake. It has been my honor to be a part of the Butler Family, to proudly wear the blue and white uniform, then to recruit and mentor tremendous young men as the men's basketball coach, and to have them remain a part of my life; and to lead an athletics department of incredibly talented professionals who work each and every day on behalf of our student-athletes.” Collier also promises to help in the search for his successor in any way he’s asked. Air Force AD Nathan Pine inks an extension through 2028 and says: “I am proud of what we have built here over the last 5 years and the success and support it has created for our cadet-athletes and coaches. This extension reflects a total team effort in the athletic department and I'm honored to continue to lead this great team at Air Force for years to come." (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports this week’s College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting in Dallas will focus largely on four topics: the search for a new executive director, the expanded CFP format, revenue-sharing, and a new TV deal. Dellenger notes CFP leaders are in the “final stages” of choosing Executive Director Bill Hancock’s successor after a “two-month search produced an array of potential candidates, from both inside and outside of college athletics” with a hire expected to be finalized this week. On the topic of revenue-sharing, Dellenger notes SMU will be at the center of much debate. While most of the latest round of realignment at the Power 5 level has involved P5 schools reshuffling among themselves, SMU is making the leap from Group of 5 to P5, and Dellenger points out: “For SMU to receive a full Power Five distribution, the four other leagues would need to take a reduction. This is significant for SMU. The school agreed to go nine years without accepting TV distribution from the ACC with the understanding that it would receive at least $10M in other distribution rights, which includes the CFP cut. The CFP cut is responsible for half of that $10M.” More from Dellenger. (link)

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick reflects on his career and discusses a number of recent changes in the industry on Wake up the Echoes, including the potential for the Fighting Irish to host a College Football Playoff game. “I think we’re going to have some memorable games, high stakes games that we get to host. We gave up the right to get a bye as part of getting this model adopted. But the result is we’ll probably be a first-round host more than most institutions. … As part of this process, some of my colleagues developed a concept that the host institution could, at its option, relocate the game somewhere else if it chose to. These were all schools or institutions working on the assumption that a northern school would want to go somewhere, like to an indoor venue, if the weather was bad. I’m thinking, ‘Oh, no, That’s sort of perfect. Give me 12 inches of snow, and let’s go.’” Lots more. (link)

Northern Kentucky announces the additions of men's volleyball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's triathlon and women's stunt to its list of sponsored sports, bringing the total number of varsity programs to 22. Along with the new programs, the athletics department has already doubled the size of the men's and women's track & field teams to go with an expansion of NKU's dance, cheerleading and pep band programs. In total, the athletics department will be adding 250 new students to the NKU campus by the 2026-27 academic year. According to its release, “all of these moves are being done to help NKU increase enrollment, to increase campus vitality and to continue to build excitement surrounding Northern Kentucky University. It will also greatly expand the chance for high school students throughout the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati tri-state area to have an opportunity to compete at the NCAA Division I level.” (link)

Cincinnati AD John Cunningham covers several topics with the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Scott Springer, including the Bearcats’ new Jordan Brand partnership, which he says is “as good as it gets” from a branding standpoint. “There's only 12 programs with Jordan Brand. On the basketball side our women's basketball gets to wear Jordan, our men's basketball gets to wear the Jumpman. It means a lot to the city and this program. With Nike in general, when you put on the 'Swoosh' it means something too. You know that you're with the biggest brand in sports." Despite UC’s football struggles, Cunningham says he still sees confidence from the team and adds: “You're ultimately judged on how you walk through the fire. When things are easy everyone sings your praises and you just navigate willy-nilly. When things get really tough, that's when you've got to have strong leadership. That's what I'm looking for from my coaches." (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken’s decision to grant class-action status in the House v. NCAA lawsuit has thrown a wrench into the legal proceedings between Washington State/Oregon State and the other members of the Pac-12, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner observes. “If Washington State and Oregon State gain control of the governing board and attempt to rebuild the conference under the Pac-12 banner, they could be subject to whatever damages emerge from the lawsuit or any settlement between the plaintiffs and the NCAA. But what if the Cougars and Beavers instead decide to join the Mountain West, which is not part of the lawsuit? Would they still be on the hook for damages? That piece is less clear, according to a source with knowledge of the House case. One source tells Wilner: “The case will be settled — there’s no way it’s going to court. But there’s a lot to be sorted out. … Who’s responsible if it all goes away? What are the liabilities? What about the lease (on the production studio in San Ramon)? What about the litigation? It’s one of the biggest issues.” Wilner: “Like so much else on the legal front, the outcome is deeply muddled and enormously significant for the two remaining schools.” (link)

A review of last season’s women’s hoops national championship between LSU and Iowa did not meet officiating expectations, according to an NCAA review as well as an independent review. NCAA VP for Women’s Basketball Lynn Holzman: "In the championship game itself, for example, we typically have a performance that, I think, is 91% historically. In that game, the percentage of correct calls was below that, around 88%." While the NCAA did not provide details of its review, which was conducted by Pictor Group, an independent review by an official who did not participate in the contest pegged the percentage of calls at a much lower figure than 88%. Notably, out-of-bounds violations were not included as part of the independent analysis, and it was unclear whether they were included in the NCAA evaluation. Holzman: "Our committee is going to get a specific education about how we evaluate officials, and this is what we're looking at. The committee is going to be trained up." (link)

Appalachian State is the recipient of a “significant gift” from alumnus Tommy Sofield and his family in support of athletics facilities enhancements. Specifically, The Sofields' lead gift will help fund a new indoor practice facility with a 100+ yard artificial turf surface to replace the current Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility that opened in October 2007, for which the Sofields also donated the lead gift. With this latest commitment, the university has raised $41M toward the $100M goal for the All for App initiative to invest and build for the future of App State athletics. (link)

The ribbon board below the video board will also be expanded from the north end of the club level on the east side around the bowl to Balch Fieldhouse on the southwest side, over 1,000 feet. The project is expected to cost $15M. (link)

The sport is 15% ahead of a 2022 season that just missed being the most-watched ever.” (link)

Nevada’s men’s basketball season opener was interrupted after bats invaded the arena, prompting Wolf Pack HC Steve Alford to say after the game: “The bat thing is getting pretty embarrassing, and it needs to be fixed. It’s uncalled for. We are a big-time basketball program and we shouldn’t be dealing with bats. We shouldn’t have a stoppage of play because we’re dealing with diving bats. Brooks Barnett, [Wolf Pack AC Kory Barnett’s son] loves it. He thinks Spider-Man’s coming to the next game, but it just can’t happen.” (link)
