Arizona President Robert Robbins tells faculty members there will be “draconian” budget cuts after Robbins and SVP/CFO Lisa Rulney last week informed the Arizona Board of Regents that the university was in a “financial crisis.” Initially, UA projected it had 156 days of cash on hand for the fiscal year; however, it turned out the model was off by $240M, meaning the school has just 97 days of cash on hand. Robbins: “I did know we were spending money, but I thought we had reserves to spend money on. But this is a big miscalculation.” UA is instituting an immediate 2% budget cut with more to come, including the possibility of cutting sports programs, and Robbins says the $55M loan the university gave the athletic department during the pandemic is not being paid back fast enough. “Everything is on the table in terms of dealing with athletics. This is an issue that is going to require a lot of tough decisions.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel echoes Sportico’s Michael McCann’s analysis in pointing out that if Michigan were to seek a temporary restraining order in the event Football HC Jim Harbaugh is suspended by the Big Ten, one of the four factors a judge would weigh would include whether not granting the restraining order would cause irreparable damage. Retired Washtenaw County Circuit Court Donald Shelton tells Thamel that U-M “would argue that each football game is unique and that suspending the coach from any of the forthcoming games is a harm to him and the team that cannot be undone regardless of the outcome of a future trial on the merits." Shelton predicts the Big Ten would counter that “the team and the games can go ahead without the head coach without detriment, as demonstrated by its success earlier this season when Coach Harbaugh was suspended for three games by the NCAA." Wake Forest Football HC Dave Clawson is curious about why the NCAA is treating the Michigan sign-stealing allegations with so much more gusto than it did the so-called WakeyLeaks scandal in 2016. He tells The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman: “I don’t know exactly what happened with Michigan or how it happened, but I know how we felt when we did find out (opponents had our stuff). You feel violated and cheated. You get really bitter. You wonder why is the NCAA involved in this, but didn’t get involved in our situation? This is a big deal because it’s Michigan, but it wasn’t a big deal when it was Wake Forest? Football is a physical, violent sport. It is a sport that kids can get hurt playing. To be compromised that much, it puts the health and well-being of the players at risk. The NCAA is supposed to be there for all of us, not just some of us.” Clawson goes on to note that he was only informed by a coaching friend in 2022 that the friend had contacted the NCAA in 2014 about WakeyLeaks. The friend asked whether the NCAA ever contacted him, to which Clawson slowly replied: “Yeah. Three years later.” Maybe the NCAA didn’t think a violation had occurred, Clawson tells Feldman, but “you’d think they’d have at least given us a heads up. We were compromised for three years. Those next three years could’ve been avoided.” (link)

Washington is worried about financial retribution should Washington State and Oregon State gain control of the Pac-12’s finances, according to a court filing obtained by The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. UW President Ana Mari Cauce says in a sworn statement: “If OSU and WSU gain control of the Board, I am concerned that they would claim control over the entirety of UW’s media rights interests. I am also concerned that, in general, a Board controlled by OSU and WSU would decide not to distribute net revenues earned by UW and the other nine departing institutions for competing during the 2023-24 year.” She adds: “Losing this revenue would be devastating for UW and our student-athletes. … I know that the other departing institutions would face similar issues if they did not receive distributions (from) the Pac-12 this year.” Whether board control would actually allow WSU and OSU to prevent the other 10 schools from collecting their revenue share remains unclear, but Cauce explains in her statement: “The power to ‘grant back, license or assign back any portion or all of the rights to the participating members’ lies with ‘the Pac-12 Board of Directors.’ If OSU and WSU gain control of the Board, I am concerned that they would claim control over the entirety of UW’s media rights interests. I am concerned that OSU and WSU would refuse to grant or license back UW’s media rights in its own athletic competitions, and may demand unreasonable charges for such grants or licenses back.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ AJ Perez has obtained audio of an exchange between Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin and student-athlete DeSanto Rollins after Rollins indicated he needed a mental health break. Kiffin can be heard saying: “If you would’ve come here when you kept getting messages that the head coach wants to talk to you and you saying ‘I’m not ready to talk to him.’” Rollins responds: “I wasn’t.” Kiffin then exclaims: “What f—ing world do you live in?” Rollins then questions why Kiffin has to be disrespectful, and Kiffin says: “Get out of here. Go. You’re off the team. You’re done. See ya. See ya. Go. Go. And guess what. We can kick you off the team. So, go read your f—ing rights about mental health. We can kick you off the team for not showing up. When the head coach asks to meet with you and you don’t show up for weeks, okay, we can remove you from the team.” (link)

The NLRB proceedings concerning unfair labor practices charges against USC, the Pac-12 and NCAA ended without “fireworks,” per On3’s Eric Prisbell, who notes the testimony won’t be released until the December 18-20 hearings. Meanwhile, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the audio of Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin chastising an amateur student-athlete for “not showing up to work” could find its way into this case. Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley opens up about his anxiety and the overall topic of mental health, telling Seth Davis he suffered a panic attack before he was set to join other university leaders in ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange nine days after the Huskies won the national championship. Hurley explains the moment, which passed and Hurley was able to join his colleagues on stage – was a reminder that mental health challenges weren’t suddenly cured by cutting down the nets. “Don’t get me wrong, [winning the title] was an incredible feeling in the moment. But it hasn’t fulfilled me in a way that maybe I thought it would. I was probably chasing that championship thinking there’d be some level of healing. It’s like realizing there’s no Santa Claus.” Hurley has been intentional about making sure his routines remain intact and tells Davis he hopes that speaking about mental health challenges publicly will help him address them more honestly and remove the stigma. “What’s the shame in it, man? There is no f------ shame in it. I’m not, like, waking up sad every day. There are things that trigger different ways you feel about yourself. It’s totally normal. Most people have to deal with depression, anxiety, frustration, rejection, addiction. It’s like getting your knee replaced.” More. (link)

Portnoy adds: “Listen, this is the NIL era, you’ve got to pad your stats to get deals.” (link)

Former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes Kim Aiken Jr., Doctor Bradley and Deshawndre Washington have been charged with multiple felonies, including criminal sexual contact and false imprisonment. Bradley and Washington were each charged with 13 felonies, while Aiken Jr. was charged with 11. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez: “The indictment filed against three former student athletes at New Mexico State University should serve as an unambiguous signal to everyone in this state that hazing will not be tolerated at our educational institutions. Players, coaches and administrators at every level are on notice that this type of violent conduct will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They should also be aware that while this action is an important first step in addressing this inexcusable behavior, our work in correcting the culture that allowed these crimes to occur is far from finished.” A spokesperson for Torrez confirms the office is still investigating NMSU’s response to the alleged crimes in a separate review, though criminal charges are not expected to be filed.
