NCAA President Charlie Baker responds to questions sent by U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) regarding transgender student-athlete participation and accommodations at NCAA events, particularly how changing areas are set up. Baker explains that bathroom and changing rooms options are “specific for the sport and separately available to men and women are provided for each championship site. Specifically for the Division I Swimming and Diving Championships, single-person, gender-neutral options are also available for all participants.” Hawley also asked whether the NCAA has a policy preventing public opposition to its transgender student-athlete policy in light of accusations made by former Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines, who has testified that student-athletes have been threatened with consequences for publicly exposing the NCAA’s approach. Baker responds that the NCAA has no such policy and notes the NCAA has never been provided details of such alleged threatening behavior but “stands ready to investigate any credible allegation.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Chris Vannini reports that while the College Football Playoff Management Committee meetings were light on news, there “seem to have been some heated discussions.” MAC Commish Jon Steinbrecher explains: “We were down in the weeds and we’re at difficult issues. They’re not always fun, but it was time well spent and that helps us move to the next meeting.” Also from Vannini: “CFP executive director Bill Hancock said they expect to have no more than two TV partners for the 12-team playoff. A streaming-only partner remains an option. Still not publicly giving a deadline for finalizing that. The CFP TV deals for 2024-25 and 2026-beyond could be separate or together. Some broadcasters more interested in the first window, others the latter. Bill Hancock said the number of visiting team tickets at first round home sites will be around 3500, including the band. Plan is to require a certain number of those for lower level.” (link)

Colorado AD Rick George joins Navigate Founder/CEO AJ Maestas to discuss the current state of college sports, the Buffs’ move to the Big 12 and how it will impact student-athletes and more. George explains Football HC Deion Sanders had as much say in the conference realignment as the department’s other coaches, telling Maestas it’s inadvisable to “include everybody in where you're going because you want to keep some things quiet. You don't want to stir up a lot of things and I think we did a really good job of that. But certainly I would tell you that Texas has always been a big area for us. Having four schools in the state of Texas that will be in the Big 12 is important, and then you’ve got Oklahoma State that's close by that has a presence in the Dallas-Fort Worth marketplace. The Dallas-Fort Worth market is fifth in the country, Houston’s seventh, Orlando is 16, we’re 17 – those are really important markets for us to be in, and the exposure that we're going to get in those markets being on linear TV partnering with Fox and ESPN is going to be incredibly valuable.” More from George. Kansas AD Travis Goff reaffirms his long-term commitment to Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self and Football HC Lance Leipold: “I want these two guys to coach until the wheels fall off, right? Literally, in both cases. And we want them of course to coach right here at Kansas until the wheels fall off, until they decide it’s time to shut it down. So, I think the mentality is similar, right? There’s 20 years of track record for Bill. There’s two national championships. There’s things that haven’t been achieved in basketball anywhere over his journey here. Football, the indications obviously in year three are just incredible. We demonstrated a strong commitment a year ago, but that doesn’t mean you just sit idle. It doesn’t mean you get comfortable. And ultimately, I think we’ve got a chance to have — and maybe we already do — have the two best in the country when you take into account men’s basketball and football coaches. So, we’ll ensure that that’s the way we go about it going forward.” (link)

Maryland-Eastern Shore announces the addition of men’s volleyball beginning with the 2025-26 season. The Hawks become the first DI HBCU to add the sport and are doing so with the help of a $250K grant from First Point Volleyball Foundation. Hawks AD Tara Owens: "The sport has a great amount of popularity and is a growing sport. I think our community will be blown away by the athleticism of this sport and the talent on the court. It is especially exciting to have the opportunity to compete in the NEC. I would like to thank NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris for the invitation to play men's volleyball in the NEC.” (link)

The Nevada women’s basketball season ticket base increased 33.5% YoY. The uptick comes following a 57.1% increase the previous year. Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray reports the “current season-ticket base is 705 fans, including 437 paid season-ticket holders and 268 comped season tickets. That's up 177 season-ticket holders from last year. That 705 figure is the largest since 2017-18, the first year of the Amanda Levens era, when the Wolf Pack had a season-ticket base of 747. … The Wolf Pack averaged 1,282 fans per home game last season, up from 945 the year prior.” (link)

After asking me to introduce myself and tell the offense what I did, I explained that I covered recruiting, radio show, postgame show, etc. As I spoke, he interrupted me to demand that I ‘look them in the eyes when I talk.’ When I was finished he proceeded to tell me that I wasn’t supportive enough to be given further access to the program, kicked me out, and told me that I was no longer welcome at practice except during open media portions (which haven’t occurred since fall camp).” (link)

Legal Matters…
+ Attorneys for Ole Miss and Football HC Lane Kiffin filed a motion Wednesday to dismiss the $40M lawsuit student-athlete DeSanto Rollins filed against them in September, according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich. Attorneys argue that Ole Miss and Kiffin are “immune" from some of Rollins' claims and that "his remaining allegations fail to state a claim upon which relief can be granted.” The school adds in a statement that “DeSanto was never removed from the football team and remains on scholarship. In addition, he continues to have the opportunity to receive all of the resources and advantages that are afforded a student-athlete at the university." (link)
+ The U.S. Northern District Court of New York upheld a district court’s dismissal of claims by a former Syracuse student-athlete of deliberate indifference and a hostile environment against the school, the athletic director and her lacrosse coach after she filed a sexual assault complaint against a male student-athlete. The court, however, remanded the retaliation claim for further consideration. The court ruled that it was plausible that threats were made in retaliation for the student-athelte’s sexual assault reporting or anticipated pursuit of legal action against the school. “Whether the school officials made the alleged threats and threatened Doe in connection with the exercise of Doe’s protected rights involve questions of fact. We thus vacate and remand the district court’s order dismissing Doe’s retaliation claim.” (link)
+ Nicholls State has parted ways with men’s basketball student-athlete Doctor Bradley, who transferred from New Mexico State and was recently charged with multiple felonies, as reported yesterday. Colonels HC Tevon Saddler: “Doctor Bradley was working with the team for a brief few months. We did however have to part ways as he returns home to deal with his legal case. We wish him the best in that effort.” (link)

The NWSL has signed a new four-year, $240M media rights deal with CBS Sports, ESPN, Prime Video and Scripps Sports beginning in 2024. Matches will be split through a minimum of 21 games for CBS Sports, 20 for ESPN/ABC, 27 for Prime Video and 50 for Scripps Sports. All NWSL matches on ESPN and ABC will be available live on ESPN+. Commissioner Jessica Berman: “These partnerships fundamentally change the game for our league and the players who take the pitch each week. … We have taken great care to ensure our games are discoverable by increasing our reach in order to expose new audiences to everything that makes our league special, without compromising the economic value of our product. This is the beginning of our future." (link)

Arizona President Robert Robbins tells faculty members there will be “draconian” budget cuts after Robbins and SVP/CFO Lisa Rulney last week informed the Arizona Board of Regents that the university was in a “financial crisis.” Initially, UA projected it had 156 days of cash on hand for the fiscal year; however, it turned out the model was off by $240M, meaning the school has just 97 days of cash on hand. Robbins: “I did know we were spending money, but I thought we had reserves to spend money on. But this is a big miscalculation.” UA is instituting an immediate 2% budget cut with more to come, including the possibility of cutting sports programs, and Robbins says the $55M loan the university gave the athletic department during the pandemic is not being paid back fast enough. “Everything is on the table in terms of dealing with athletics. This is an issue that is going to require a lot of tough decisions.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel echoes Sportico’s Michael McCann’s analysis in pointing out that if Michigan were to seek a temporary restraining order in the event Football HC Jim Harbaugh is suspended by the Big Ten, one of the four factors a judge would weigh would include whether not granting the restraining order would cause irreparable damage. Retired Washtenaw County Circuit Court Donald Shelton tells Thamel that U-M “would argue that each football game is unique and that suspending the coach from any of the forthcoming games is a harm to him and the team that cannot be undone regardless of the outcome of a future trial on the merits." Shelton predicts the Big Ten would counter that “the team and the games can go ahead without the head coach without detriment, as demonstrated by its success earlier this season when Coach Harbaugh was suspended for three games by the NCAA." Wake Forest Football HC Dave Clawson is curious about why the NCAA is treating the Michigan sign-stealing allegations with so much more gusto than it did the so-called WakeyLeaks scandal in 2016. He tells The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman: “I don’t know exactly what happened with Michigan or how it happened, but I know how we felt when we did find out (opponents had our stuff). You feel violated and cheated. You get really bitter. You wonder why is the NCAA involved in this, but didn’t get involved in our situation? This is a big deal because it’s Michigan, but it wasn’t a big deal when it was Wake Forest? Football is a physical, violent sport. It is a sport that kids can get hurt playing. To be compromised that much, it puts the health and well-being of the players at risk. The NCAA is supposed to be there for all of us, not just some of us.” Clawson goes on to note that he was only informed by a coaching friend in 2022 that the friend had contacted the NCAA in 2014 about WakeyLeaks. The friend asked whether the NCAA ever contacted him, to which Clawson slowly replied: “Yeah. Three years later.” Maybe the NCAA didn’t think a violation had occurred, Clawson tells Feldman, but “you’d think they’d have at least given us a heads up. We were compromised for three years. Those next three years could’ve been avoided.” (link)

Washington is worried about financial retribution should Washington State and Oregon State gain control of the Pac-12’s finances, according to a court filing obtained by The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. UW President Ana Mari Cauce says in a sworn statement: “If OSU and WSU gain control of the Board, I am concerned that they would claim control over the entirety of UW’s media rights interests. I am also concerned that, in general, a Board controlled by OSU and WSU would decide not to distribute net revenues earned by UW and the other nine departing institutions for competing during the 2023-24 year.” She adds: “Losing this revenue would be devastating for UW and our student-athletes. … I know that the other departing institutions would face similar issues if they did not receive distributions (from) the Pac-12 this year.” Whether board control would actually allow WSU and OSU to prevent the other 10 schools from collecting their revenue share remains unclear, but Cauce explains in her statement: “The power to ‘grant back, license or assign back any portion or all of the rights to the participating members’ lies with ‘the Pac-12 Board of Directors.’ If OSU and WSU gain control of the Board, I am concerned that they would claim control over the entirety of UW’s media rights interests. I am concerned that OSU and WSU would refuse to grant or license back UW’s media rights in its own athletic competitions, and may demand unreasonable charges for such grants or licenses back.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ AJ Perez has obtained audio of an exchange between Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin and student-athlete DeSanto Rollins after Rollins indicated he needed a mental health break. Kiffin can be heard saying: “If you would’ve come here when you kept getting messages that the head coach wants to talk to you and you saying ‘I’m not ready to talk to him.’” Rollins responds: “I wasn’t.” Kiffin then exclaims: “What f—ing world do you live in?” Rollins then questions why Kiffin has to be disrespectful, and Kiffin says: “Get out of here. Go. You’re off the team. You’re done. See ya. See ya. Go. Go. And guess what. We can kick you off the team. So, go read your f—ing rights about mental health. We can kick you off the team for not showing up. When the head coach asks to meet with you and you don’t show up for weeks, okay, we can remove you from the team.” (link)

The NLRB proceedings concerning unfair labor practices charges against USC, the Pac-12 and NCAA ended without “fireworks,” per On3’s Eric Prisbell, who notes the testimony won’t be released until the December 18-20 hearings. Meanwhile, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter notes the audio of Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin chastising an amateur student-athlete for “not showing up to work” could find its way into this case. Connecticut Men’s Basketball HC Dan Hurley opens up about his anxiety and the overall topic of mental health, telling Seth Davis he suffered a panic attack before he was set to join other university leaders in ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange nine days after the Huskies won the national championship. Hurley explains the moment, which passed and Hurley was able to join his colleagues on stage – was a reminder that mental health challenges weren’t suddenly cured by cutting down the nets. “Don’t get me wrong, [winning the title] was an incredible feeling in the moment. But it hasn’t fulfilled me in a way that maybe I thought it would. I was probably chasing that championship thinking there’d be some level of healing. It’s like realizing there’s no Santa Claus.” Hurley has been intentional about making sure his routines remain intact and tells Davis he hopes that speaking about mental health challenges publicly will help him address them more honestly and remove the stigma. “What’s the shame in it, man? There is no f------ shame in it. I’m not, like, waking up sad every day. There are things that trigger different ways you feel about yourself. It’s totally normal. Most people have to deal with depression, anxiety, frustration, rejection, addiction. It’s like getting your knee replaced.” More. (link)

Portnoy adds: “Listen, this is the NIL era, you’ve got to pad your stats to get deals.” (link)

Former New Mexico State men’s basketball student-athletes Kim Aiken Jr., Doctor Bradley and Deshawndre Washington have been charged with multiple felonies, including criminal sexual contact and false imprisonment. Bradley and Washington were each charged with 13 felonies, while Aiken Jr. was charged with 11. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez: “The indictment filed against three former student athletes at New Mexico State University should serve as an unambiguous signal to everyone in this state that hazing will not be tolerated at our educational institutions. Players, coaches and administrators at every level are on notice that this type of violent conduct will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They should also be aware that while this action is an important first step in addressing this inexcusable behavior, our work in correcting the culture that allowed these crimes to occur is far from finished.” A spokesperson for Torrez confirms the office is still investigating NMSU’s response to the alleged crimes in a separate review, though criminal charges are not expected to be filed. (link); Bradley, who transferred to Nicholls State this season, has subsequently been suspended by the Colonels indefinitely. (link)
