#6: DePauw AD Stevie Baker-Watson joins D3.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2023 NACDA Convention. The two discuss some of the pressing issues that Division III is facing and how she is preparing and urging her colleagues to lean into change and investigate solutions to serve the student-athletes. She also discusses national issues she’s tracking on the Division I level and how that translates to DIII. “There’s any number of us that have been talking about budgets, staffing and facilities here. I think those are pretty common, but a lot of us are feeling the pinch at our institutions about how we are going to make ends meet. We're seeing escalating costs and things that we really can't control: what our buses are costing, our hotels, our food and we're trying to balance that with what the student experience is looking like on the other end of things. Nationally folks are starting to pay more attention to what's happening at the other divisions. When we went through the Constitution Committee work, there was this idea that maybe what was happening in Division I wasn't going to perhaps touch the other divisions and now we're seeing more communications coming into our office. We're seeing more things that if we're not paying attention we're going to be asleep at the wheel and we're going to have somebody else be making decisions on our behalf.” Full conversation on Connect. #5: The NACC declares Women’s Cross Country tri-champions after determination was made to vacate the team results of the 6-kilometer women's championship race at the 2023 NACC Cross Country Championships. Per a league statement, the decision “comes following an on-course incident during the championship race that led members of the lead group - a faction representing roughly 20 percent of the field - to be directed off course. Once the error was discovered, the impacted runners were quickly directed back on course. For many - if not all - in the group, however, their races were severely compromised. It was determined that, had the incident not occurred, Aurora University, Concordia University Wisconsin, and St. Norbert College all had a reasonable chance of capturing the title. As the lead group was not composed exclusively of runners from those three institutions, the incident also had a real and material impact on the team standing of institutions further down the table. Additionally, women's cross country will be removed from the calculations for the 2023-2024 NACC Women's All-Sports Trophy.” (link)

#2: Earlier this month, Amherst faculty reviewed athletic recruiting data and its impact on admissions which began with President Michael Elliott emphasizing the importance of athletics, the progress that has been made and still needs to be made regarding equity, adding: “Equally important is that athletics recruiting takes place within an ecosystem that includes both Division III and our athletics conference, NESCAC. The NESCAC presidents are actively considering how to reform the recruiting system … so that it better serves our institutions in light of the Supreme Court decision.” Professor of Economics Jessica Reyes, who brought the issue forward, told The Amherst Student that the same inequities exist from five to 10 years ago, but the efforts taken have made an impact, concluding: “I do not believe Amherst’s values are consistent with having two admissions processes that are separate and unequal, one that is the official one we acknowledge and another one that is somewhat secret (though it is explained in reports) that serves to amplify existing privilege.” (link)
