Multnomah will merge into Jessup and become a satellite campus, with Multnomah noting: “Due to growing financial challenges, declining enrollment, and economic uncertainties across higher education, we have passionately sought God’s guidance on the best path forward. We have a responsibility to our students—past, present, and future—to remain a relevant university, uncompromising on spiritual formation and academic rigor. It was no longer financially feasible for Multnomah University to operate as an independent institution. The opportunity presented by Jessup University to collaborate with us in a ‘merger of mission’ enables us to further the legacy of Multnomah while upholding the fundamental principles that we hold dear.” As for athletics’ future: “We plan for the Multnomah Campus of Jessup University to complete the 2023-24 season as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Jessup University main campus is transitioning to become an NCAA Division II member, effective in Fall 2024. We remain committed to quality athletic programming as a vibrant part of our future.” (link, link)

The AMC will add incoming NAIA member, Baptist Bible, and Crowley's Ridge, effective next academic year. Commissioner Will Wolper: “The AMC is excited to add both Baptist Bible and Crowley’s Ridge for next year. Both institutions are growing as institutions in general as well as athletically. Many of our schools already compete against the two schools in non-conference competition, so the opportunity for us to add two institutions in our southern footprint that align with our current membership philosophically, on their mission and sports sponsorship, strengthens the AMC, and will enhance our student-athletes experiences as well as the experiences of Baptist Bible and Crowley’s Ridge’s student-athletes.” Notable: “With the addition of Springfield, Mo. and Paragould, Ark. to the Conference’s footprint, over 40 percent of the travel in the Conference is under two-and-a-half hours, with nearly 35 percent under one hour 45 minutes.” (link)

The Broader Landscape: 

+ While President Joe Biden “did not stake out specific positions on hot-button issues like NIL or whether athletes should be classified as employees and receive regular salaries” during yesterday’s roundtable discussion, Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson reports that “what was originally supposed to be a drop-in during the roundtable by the president ended up being about an hour spent with the players. After engaging them in the roundtable, Biden took them on a 20–30 minute tour of the White House, including the Oval Office.” Former LSU (NCAA DI)/Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark: “I thought that his attention to what we were saying, and the passion that, whether it was Rod [Gilmore], Desmond [Howard], Kevin [Neghandi] showed for the young student-athletes was amazing. I think it was palpable and tangible in that room, and hopefully something comes of it.” Johnson also offers some notable context by pointing out that “it was the latest in a series of shows of support for the labor movement” for Biden, who “recently threw heavy support behind the United Automobile Workers during their strike, counting their new contracts, with large wage increases, as a political victory.” (link)

+ Disney CEO Bob Iger reiterates ESPN will move to DTC no later than 2025 and says: “We believe we have an opportunity to strengthen that hand even more by bringing in one or two strategic partners that can add either marketing support, technology support or possibly content support. Why not go out with a stronger hand, and that's what we've been considering. We've been in discussions with a number of entities. I don’t have anything specific to tell you right now except I think you can expect us to elaborate more on that sometime in the near future.” (link)

+ Chicago Federal Reserve President Austan Goolsbee believes a soft landing is still on the table as the Fed seeks to combat inflation without significantly hurting the economy. “Because of some of the strangeness of this moment, there is the possibility of the golden path…that we got inflation down without a recession. If that happened…it would just be a continuation of what we’ve already seen this year, which is unemployment up very modestly, while inflation has come down a lot. That’s our goal.” Goolsbee notes the fast inflation drop occurred in 1982 and says: “We’ll see what happens over the next couple of months. We might equal the fastest dropping inflation in the last century. So we’re making progress on the inflation rate.” (link)

Sport Sponsorship:

 + Next year, Carroll will add four new teams: Competitive Cheer, Competitive Dance, JV Men’s Basketball and JV Men’s Soccer. The new Cheer and Dance programs aim to grow to “teams of 24 athletes within three years.” (link) 

+ McPherson will add Women’s Bowling as its 19th sport, starting in 2024-25. (link)

The NAIA has partnered with Winter-Dent & Company for a three-year deal to be the NAIA’s official employee benefits partner. Of note from the association: “This partnership marks the beginning of a three-year journey aimed at enhancing healthcare solutions for NAIA member institutions through the exploration of a self-funded healthcare consortium. The initiative aims to empower college presidents within the NAIA to take control of their institutions’ healthcare needs by providing affordable and sustainable options for their students, employees, faculty and universities as a whole. The partnership builds on the NAIA’s recent success in developing a partnership that established a retirement plan consortium which has enabled NAIA institutions to, as a collective, gain access to benefits traditionally reserved for institutions of much larger size.” (link)
