Our deepest condolences to the LEARFIELD family & to so many around college athletics who called him a friend as EVP of the University Partnerships Group Mike Hamilton has passed away. Hamilton also served as AD at Tennessee from 2003 to 2011. LEARFIELD CEO Cole Gahagan: “Mike Hamilton lived a remarkable life and leaves behind a legacy that cannot be put into words. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.” (link); The Knoxville News Sentinel says the cause of Hamilton’s passing is unknown, but Hamilton had been battling cancer & an early October Instagram post by Hamilton indicated he was “in position 1A” to receive a liver transplant. As expected, Michigan filed a 219-page temporary restraining order in Washtenaw County Circuit Court. Of note: “There is no evidence of an ongoing threat to the integrity of the competition, or any explanation why removing the head coach would address such a threat. ... Instead, the conference’s punitive action threatens the integrity of competition by improperly depriving a nationally ranked football program of its leader on the eve of critical games, just as the season approaches the playoffs. The (Big Ten's) sportsmanship policy’s focus on the integrity of competition is intended to prevent such imbalances — not create them.” The case has been transferred from Judge Timothy Connors, who has deep University of Michigan ties, to Judge Carol Kuhnke, with the expectation a ruling will happen before today’s Noon ET kick with Penn State. Key context: “At nights and on holidays, when the courts are otherwise closed, courts usually have a judge on call, for cases needing immediate attention. Temporary restraining orders often are issued before a full court hearing can take place.” More from the Detroit News’ Tony Paul. (link)

A Michigan “official” describes feelings around the program to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson: “Disappointed, and embittered. The lack of professionalism and the lack of care and respect for the kids is stunning, and it will not be soon forgotten.” A number of football student-athletes - along with UM President Santa Ono - tweeted “bet” as a sign they intend to use the Big Ten’s decision as motivation. Here’s a key part of how Sportico’s Michael McCann breaks down the legal ramifications: “A TRO could be granted for a short period, such as only 24 hours. Even such a short-lived TRO would allow Harbaugh to coach his team at Penn State. The court could then consider the more lasting forms of demanded relief. To that point, Michigan and Harbaugh also demand a show cause hearing in which the Big Ten would need to explain why the court should not issue a preliminary injunction (PI). A PI would last multiple weeks or months, and would preserve the status quo—Harbaugh as coach—until the court determines the merits of the case.” (link)
|
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg & Dan Murphy: “If Harbaugh's restraining order is not granted, a source told ESPN on Friday that one possible replacement as acting head coach in Happy Valley would be Mike Hart, the team's running backs coach. Hart previously served as an acting head coach for the second half of a win over UNLV in early September while Harbaugh was suspended by the school due to a separate NCAA investigation into recruiting violations.” (link)

While a final and unanimous vote is still needed from the College Football Playoff Board of Managers, Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger reports that the CFP Management Committee is recommending that the expanded playoff field encompass five automatic qualifiers and seven at-large berths, a change from the originally approved 6+6 model. At Thursday’s meeting, the members of the CFP Management Committee cast votes to send a recommendation to the Board of Managers, per Dellenger. Also of key note as Oregon State & Washington State continue to strategize Pac-2 options: “Commissioners also established a new policy requiring a league to have eight members to be eligible for an automatic qualifying spot to the 12-team playoff.” (link)

CollegeAD breaks down the terms of Illinois AD Josh Whitman’s contract extension: Length is through 2031 with two one-year extensions available that would take it to 2033. Base pay by July 1, 2028 will reach $1.725M. $300K retention bonuses set for 2024 and 2029, then $325K in 2026, $350K in 2028 and 2031 and $375K in 2033. Annual incentives range from $350K to $400K. Payout terms: If Illinois chooses to part ways with Whitman without cause he would be due 100% of remaining base pay with a $9M cap. Buyout terms: If Whitman were to voluntarily exit for another Big Ten AD job he would owe $1M per year remaining on the deal. If he leaves for another FBS AD not in the league it’s $750K per year. If the move is to a senior position at a pro or amateur organization it’s also $750K per year, which reduces to $250K after 2028. (link)

One day after Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin and the school filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit brought by FB student-athlete DeSanto Rollins, US Magistrate Judge Roy Percy has ordered a stay in the case. Percy’s order: “Under Local Uniform Civil Rule 16(b)(3)(B) '(f)iling a motion to compel arbitration, or a motion asserting an immunity defense or jurisdictional defense stays the attorney conference and disclosure requirements and all discovery, pending the court’s ruling on the motion, including any appeal.’ Consequently, the disclosure requirements and all discovery are hereby stayed, and the case management conference is continued, pending a ruling on the motion to dismiss.” (link)

DePaul plans to build a $60M, four-story basketball practice facility after the board of trustees approved plans to demolish the five century-old buildings in the heart of the Lincoln Park campus that will serve as the future site of the facility. Some in the local community are concerned about the impact on student housing availability and the character of the neighborhood. In the redevelopment, DePaul would lose bed space for 80 on-campus students. VP of Facility Operations Rich Wiltse says the school has 79 beds empty on campus at present and that there is land earmarked for future on-campus student housing one block north of the site. The digital renderings for the new facility illustrate plans for one large building with two full basketball courts and lounge spaces for varsity teams. The building features a lower half made of brick to match architecture in the area, and a glass upper half of the facade. (link)

Southern Miss completed its Campaign for Southern Miss two years ahead of schedule. USM alumni, faculty, staff, and friends collectively committed more than $156M to support student success, academic excellence, and innovation and discovery during the campaign. Of that, $44M was contributed through the Southern Miss Athletic Foundation. Highlights of that effort include growing the Circle of Champions to more than 200 members, Eagle Club memberships topping an all-time high 2,800 members and a bevy of facility enhancements. (link)

Yesterday's Evening Standard...

Air Force Superintendent Lieutenant General Richard M. Clark has been selected to replace Bill Hancock as the new executive director of the College Football Playoff. Mississippi State President/CFP Board of Managers Chair Mark Keenum: "General Clark's experience leading the U.S Air Force Academy as a Three-star General and also being a four-year letter winner with the U.S Air Force Football team gives him a strong background to excel in this crucial leadership role. I would add that we will surely miss Bill Hancock, but I want to note that Bill has graciously offered to stay on board through January 2025 to help General Clark get ready. Bill will remain at the helm throughout this season, while 2024 will mark a year of transition. Bill has been an outstanding leader for CFP's first 10 years. Everyone in college football owes Bill a debt of gratitude." (link)

The Big Ten has suspended Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh for the remainder of the regular season for violating the league’s sportsmanship policy. “This disciplinary action shall not preclude the University or its football team from having its Head Football Coach attend practices or other football team activities other than the game activities to which it applies. For clarity, the Head Football Coach shall not be present at the game venue on the dates of the games to which this disciplinary action applies. The Big Ten Conference will have no additional comment at this time.” (link, link - Full letter & notice sent to Michigan from the B1G); Key piece of the notice as pointed out by The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel: “The Big Ten is also asserting that they are not actually sanctioning Harbaugh, for whom they have no proof of wrongdoing, but that he ‘embodies the university for purposes of its football program.’” The notice also indicates further penalties stemming from the situation are possible. (link); Not surprisingly, multiple reports indicate Michigan will “seek a court order” to ensure Harbaugh can coach tomorrow’s contest at Penn State. (link, link)

Charlotte Football HC Biff Poggi weighs in on the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan: “I have been quiet on the Michigan situation BUT NO longer. I was closer to Jim Harbaugh over the last three years than anyone except his wife and kids. If Jim knew, I would have known. I didn’t know and neither did he. I stake my reputation on it. Stop whining and get a better team.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek Q&As with Hawgs Sports Network’s Matt Jones and explains the league isn’t close to a consensus on an eight- or nine-game football schedule. “What’s worked for the Southeastern Conference, our ultimate goal is to get one or two teams into the College Football Playoff, and right now the eight-game model – I mean we have gotten one or two teams in with only four opportunities and with 12 opportunities we think we can get multiple teams in so we're not going to make a change just for the sake of change. There’s got to be some type of value add for us…because when you play an extra game that’s nine more losses within your conference. That’s going to hurt your chances.” The biggest hangup with the nine-game model, Yurachek continues, is the nine games along with the current requirement to play a Power 5 team in the non-conference. “That’s 10 really intense, tough football games to put our young men through, and I don’t know from a depth standpoint that the University of Arkansas football program is built to endure nine really tough football games.” Yurachek also explains UA was told the market for corporate naming rights for the football stadium are in the 10-15-year, $3-4M area, “but we will go to some personal entities, some families within our Arkansas community and approach them…sometime in early 2024.” Jones asks: “Safe to say that if it’s a family that buys the rights it would be less than the corporate naming rights?” Yurachek: “I think it’s the opposite of that.” Lots more from Yurachek, who also explains that, in regards to facilities upgrades for soccer and softball, the price has gone from ~$400 per square foot in 2021 to ~$750 now. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown unpacks what a loss for the NCAA in House v. NCAA could mean in practical terms and points out that with upwards of $4.2B at stake, the “NCAA itself doesn’t have that kind of money, even if you garnish their future earnings from the NCAA Tournament TV deals. If the burden for that penalty falls more on the shoulders of conferences and individual institutions, you could potentially see a contraction of other components of the college sports industry. [...] There are a gazillion unknowns left to navigate in this case. But it does have the potential to be as disruptive as the NCAA’s other major legal challenges.” (link)

Hawai’i has begun construction on its new soccer and track & field facility, which will include an NCAA-compliant 400-meter, eight-lane synthetic track and an NCAA-compliant soccer field. The project is the second phase of the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex $30M expansion approved by the UH Board of Regents in August 2022. Rainbow Warriors AD Craig Angelos: “This project speaks volumes about everyone at UH involved in the retrofitting of the Ching Athletics Complex to the UH football team home games. It was already a miracle to have the facility expanded and ready for football just nine months after Aloha Stadium was closed and now we have turned it into a positive for our soccer and track teams.” (link)

Endeavor’s stake in LEARFIELD is now just 1%, down from 42%, following LEARFIELD’s recapitalization, according to a SBJ’s Chris Smith. “Clearlake Capital, Charlesbank Capital and Fortress Investment Group became LEARFIELD’s majority investors, with Endeavor, Silver Lake and Atairos reducing their stakes in the business. It was not previously known how much of Learfield they continue to control. Endeavor reported that it did not incur a share of LEARFIELD’s net losses this year, though its stake in the business incurred losses of some $457M across the prior three years.” (link)
