Texas A&M parts ways with Football HC Jimbo Fisher, whose buyout totals at least $76M. TAMU began taking steps toward letting Fisher go in a meeting with regents last week, and Aggies AD Ross Bjork explains: “I'll just say [there was a] robust conversation and I'll just leave it at that. But there was no vote. This was my decision to the president and Chancellor [John] Sharp. And that was the end of our decision-making process." Fisher is owed $19.2M within the next 60 days and then $7.2M annually through 2031, per ESPN’s Dave Wilson, who notes there is “no offset or mitigation on those payments, and the annual payments start 120 days after termination.” Bjork: "The finances are monumental. Let me be very clear in this next part: Texas A&M athletics and the 12th Man Foundation will be the sole sources of the necessary funds covering these transition costs." When asked if he expected to be on the hook for the entire buyout, Bjork noted there were "different parameters" in the contract language. "Those mechanics will be worked out as soon as we touch base with his representation.” Bjork went on to remark that “we have a lot of new revenue coming our way too, but we also have to manage expenses. There's a lot of things within even the football budget that we've got flexibility on where we can still be at a high level, but we can also spend a lot less, but we can be a championship-funded program. We're going to adjust all that." (link); Bjork’s full presser. (link)

There is no more lopsided contest in this sport than Jimmy Sexton versus SEC athletic directors,” according to The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel. “He and his ilk have done a masterful job of exploiting schools’ emotion-driven coaching searches and amateurish negotiators to the tune of hundreds of millions in their clients’ bank accounts, whether they’re successful or whether they fail spectacularly. … The schools often negotiate against themselves, paying a coach far more than it would actually take for him to come there or stay there mostly because others are doing the same. They rush to lock themselves into stratospheric obligations to guys not named Kirby Smart or Nick Saban, then go begging for donations when they somehow can’t balance their budgets.” (link)

Boise State parts ways with Football HC Andy Avalos, whose buyout is 85% of his base salary, which is $1.55M this year, per the Idaho Statesman’s Ron Counts. (link)

Notable detail in the Michigan-Big Ten saga, per Law360: “The University of Michigan has retained Washington, D.C.-based Williams & Connolly LLP as outside counsel as allegations of illegal scouting and signal-stealing by the football program are investigated..” (link); Also, The M Den, along with Valiant Management Group, which runs the Michigan-focused Champions Circle collective, released a ‘Michigan vs. Everybody’ merchandise line on Friday morning, and after 48 hours, over 10K products have been sold, raising $50K in NIL for U-M student-athletes, On3’s Clayton Sayfie reports. Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly to AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz: “I’ll attend games without [our institutions] knowing I’m there. … I can hide behind a hat and attend a game and watch what’s going on and get a sense of what the experience is like and that’s what I try to do. … You get a real sense of what it’s like without the Commissioner being there and then when you indicate you are coming, there’s a whole different mindset – ‘Oh my gosh the commissioner’s here.’ I’m not that kind of commissioner. I’m the kind of guy that just wants to sit in the stands and watch a game.” Butterly also talks about hiring IntelliSport Analytics to conduct a comprehensive study on the student-athlete experience from a conference level: “Really wanted to get a sense of their experience in the Big West. Are they enjoying their experience? What are our strengths? What are our weaknesses? … We focused it on the conference level, not institution to institutional level, as the institutions really didn't want to see yet where their weaknesses may lie. They really wanted to get a sense of where the conference was, but now that they've seen the great work that IntelliSport did…the institutions want to cross-correlate the data specific to their institutions.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner offers some predictions for Tuesday’s hearing in the lawsuit filed by Washington State and Oregon State against the outgoing members of the Pac-12. One scenario involves a settlement via mediation. “As we see it, there is room for compromise: The 10 outbound schools relinquish their board votes, allowing WSU and OSU to control the future of the conference; meanwhile, WSU and OSU agree to distribute most, if not all of the 2023-24 revenue. … Likelihood of settlement: 50%.” In another scenario, Wilner predicts the loser will appeal. “It’s difficult to sketch a scenario in which [Whitman County Judge Gary] Libey’s ruling carries enough nuance to satisfy both sides. As a result, multiple sources familiar with details of the case expect the loser to appeal Libey’s ruling immediately to the Washington Supreme Court in Olympia. In fact, this might have been Washington’s plan all along. Why? Because an appeal would turn a road game (15 miles from Pullman) into a neutral court affair. It might even give the defendants an advantage. Olympia is an hour from Seattle. There’s a strong chance that presiding judges will have UW ties. … Likelihood of an appeal: 99.9% (assuming no settlement).” (link)

Former Fox Sports Networks President Bob Thompson weighs in: “The clear choice is ‘mediation’...with an additional provision for liabilities incurred while all schools were members. Distribute the 2023-24 revenue 12 ways and the remaining assets stay with the conference for OSU/WSU to use for a future rebuild. Liabilities incurred up through August 1, 2024, should remain with the 12 members. House v. NCAA, Holiday Bowl suit, Pac 12 Network lease, etc. Come on kids...act like adults and let's make a deal.” (link)

Iowa set a women’s wrestling attendance world record* by drawing 8,207 to the Trailblazer Duals at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Bowlsby Sports Advisors Founder/President Kyle Bowlsby points out the women “would be third in the country for men’s if average held for remainder of the year.” *An Iowa spokesperson says the university isn't 100% certain that Sunday's event set a record; however UI is confident that 8,207 set the record by a comfortable margin. USA Today columnist Dan Wolken has UCLA atop this week’s College Football Misery Index. Wolken acknowledges the Bruins were without starting QB Dante Moore and backup QB Ethan Garbers, but “you’d think UCLA would have enough depth by this point in [HC Chip] Kelly’s tenure to just out-talent a team like Arizona State with a first-year coach in Kenny Dillingham.” Duke, Washington State, Minnesota and Oklahoma State round out the index. College football’s instant replay review is a “pox on college sports and it must be stopped,” according to the News & Observer’s Luke DeCock. “We’re going to waste hours — days, cumulatively, over the course of a season — grinding down frame-by-frame on the dumbest, most inconsequential plays, but we’re not going to stop and look at a contested catch that may have decided Saturday night’s Duke-North Carolina game long before the second overtime?” Regardless of the outcome of the play in question, which could have resulted in a completed catch, an incomplete pass or a Duke interception (and was ultimately ruled the former), DeCock asserts the play was “was incredibly difficult to adjudicate in real time with big bodies tumbling to the ground and the ball moving around” and therefore would have benefited from a closer look. “Both basketball and football would be well served to adopt the NFL’s challenge-based system. If a play’s important enough to be reviewed outside of the final two minutes, let one of the coaches make that decision, because it’s hard to justify all the time spent on replays even in the best of circumstances — and impossible to justify if it’s not used when it’s actually needed.” (link)

More Coaches Corner…
+ Notable football head coaching bonuses this week, as reported by USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: Georgia boss Kirby Smart ($100K); Alabama’s Nick Saban and Memphis HC Ryan Silverfield (both get $75K); Auburn’s Hugh Freeze, Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Maryland’s Mike Locksley, Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith each get $50K. Troy HC Jon Sumrall gets a one-year automatic extension worth at least $1.1M guaranteed. Former Texas A&M HC Jimbo Fisher gets $100K for the Aggies sixth win of the season on Saturday. (link)

One person standing in the way of changes to access for the expanded College Football Playoff is Washington State President Kirk Schulz. Before yesterday’s Cougars’ kick with Cal, Schulz indicated he’s willing to negotiate if the governing board can identify a “financial arrangement” for the remaining Pac-12 schools (Washington State & Oregon State). Further: “We’ll make a judgment about what we want to do, or if there’s a request to make of our partners in return for a yes vote. I think it will happen quickly. There’s an eagerness to get it resolved before the CFP championship game.” More from The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. (link)

As you likely know by now, Michigan did not get a ruling on a temporary restraining order before yesterday’s game against Penn State that would have allowed football head coach Jim Harbaugh to be on the sidelines. Wolverines AD Warde Manuel released a lengthy statement before kickoff, which included: “I want to make it clear at the outset of this statement that no one at the University of Michigan is happy to hear of the allegations and preliminary evidence that has come forth about in-person scouting and sign stealing by a member of our football program. No one. We, like every institution in this country, preach and educate all of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, to adhere to rules and ask questions if something is unclear. However, no one here, and no one at other universities around this country, wants to be convicted and penalized without due process of a complete investigation and with significant harm to our student-athletes. This is a fundamental principle of our justice, NCAA and, until yesterday, our conference systems. Sadly, that is not what happened yesterday. [...] All of the Head Coaches in the Big Ten (some who have been accused of actively participating in the trading of signals of opponents) and my Big Ten AD colleagues can rejoice today that someone was ‘held accountable,’ but they should be worried about the new standard of judgment (without complete investigation) that has been unleashed in this conference.” (link)

A hearing in the Michigan situation will be held this coming Friday at 9am ET in the Washtenaw County Circuit Court. All parties will be in attendance. The Wolverines head to Maryland for a kick with the Terps on Saturday. (link)

The D1.dossier for Florida Gulf Coast is done & ready to help those of you interested in leading the Eagles. Gardner-Webb AD Andrew Goodrich: “On the front end of the process, the information provided by D1.dossier saved me at least 12 hours of research time. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Undoubtedly, it helped me land my first AD opportunity, and furthermore, on the back end of the process, the D1.dossier information has helped me to be very effective the first thirty days in the chair.” (link)

Penn State Piazza Center Research Scholar Chris Zacharda and RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick examine the specific approach schools should take to combat hazing. Preventative measures include 360-degree education, routine culture audits and constant reinforcement. “On a regular basis, teams must reflect on whether they are perpetuating a climate in which it is appropriate—or even expected—to diminish others, or force newcomers into participating in problematic traditions to ‘prove’ their commitment. Systemic, cultural issues like these have to be dismantled at the organizational, not individual, level.” They also offer tools to help build a scalable student conduct program by recruiting allies across campus and rethinking reporting mechanisms. They advise: “Form relationships with Greek life advisers, athletics directors, and coaches. Create an internal network you can rely on to support your hazing prevention efforts and to help explore potential misconduct so that the truth comes to life faster. …. The reporting mechanisms available to your campus community should not only be anonymous and accessible, they should also make it easier for leadership to capture important information and hone in on credible cases. … With a more expansive approach to hazing prevention and targeted resources for investigations, higher education leaders have an opportunity to buck this unfortunate tradition.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ben Pickman and Chantel Jennings join the Sports Media with Richard Deitsch podcast to talk women’s college basketball, and Jennings says that, with few exceptions, women’s hoops programs are generous with their access and understand the important role the media can play in telling their stories. “I think there's also a role and responsibility for media to do that well to sort of show that these human interest profiles and stories and that access – you can turn it into a story that's revealing and tells the truth about someone. Sort of my soapbox of sports journalism is that storytelling is best when it reminds us that we're not alone, and so those stories that we can tell within the sport, when we can do that as writers we have to do it well.” Pickman adds that agents are also increasingly part of college sports coverage, and “on a very granular level, I think story-by-story it depends on how much does an agency want to be involved? How much do they want to coordinate a conversation with a player, with a parent, with a friend? … I feel like that’s something I’m constantly monitoring.” Lots more. (link)

The men’s college basketball season “announced its arrival with the ultimate whimper, a snivel, and an embarrassing first day that began with IUPUI against Spalding (DIII) and saw only one ranked team (No. 21 USC) face another another high-major (Kansas State) in Las Vegas,” The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman writes. The Champions Classic, which has launched the season in the past, was pushed back a week this year due to Election Day, and Goodman reports there are no plans to return it to the opening weekend because “at least one of the coaches involved wants a week to get a few games under his belt. … I get it. Coaches are scared the first week, especially with so many having wholesale changes to their rosters due to the increasing number of transfers. But most coaches are in the same situation.” NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt understands the frustration regarding a lack of marquee matchups to open the season, telling Goodman the sport is “missing an opportunity.” To combat the problem, Goodman suggests taking “16 Top 25-caliber teams, whose coaches possess job security, and sign a two-year deal for each of them to play one another during the first week of the season. It doesn’t have to be Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and Michigan State since they will play in the Champions Classic the second Tuesday of the season. Here’s 16 potential teams: Purdue, UConn, Houston, Creighton, Tennessee, Gonzaga, Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, Baylor, Villanova, Saint Mary’s, Alabama, Indiana, Virginia, and Auburn.” One exec tells Goodman they would love to have games of that caliber each week, but notes “this is squarely on the coaches.” (link)
