Here’s how The Athletic’s Doug Haller describes Arizona State’s opportunity in hiring a new AD: “Arizona State is viewed nationally as an underachiever. That’s not unfair. The university’s anchor programs all have struggled recently. The Sun Devils are behind rivals in the name, image and likeness race, which directly impacts their athletic performance. They need an athletic director who embraces the changing landscape and can convince donors and local businesses what’s needed to compete at the highest level. They need an athletic director who recognizes that Desert Financial Arena is decades past its prime and that the men’s basketball program cannot compete at a high level until it is renovated or replaced. The potential is there, but the administrative support has not always been in line. That has to change.” (link)

More on the new Legends College from division President Mike Behan, who points out Legends operates based on the strength of six verticals: planning, premium sales, partnerships, hospitality, merchandise and technology solutions: “We’re going to continue adding support, resources and talent across the college business in each of the six verticals. We’ve already begun the process of adding some folks and we’re going to continue to look for and hire additional people over the next few weeks.” Fundraising is one area the company believes it can be especially impactful for athletic departments. Legends COO/Co-President Mike Tomon: “When you think about this space and look for new engagements with universities, fundraising is one unique opportunity that will be key to the business.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit takes a deeper look at NCAA President Charlie Baker’s claim to lawmakers last month that he has “talked to probably a thousand student-athletes since I got this job, and I haven’t talked to one yet [who] wants to be an employee.” Libit notes that “under-oath comment set off the BS detectors of NCAA skeptics inside and outside of college sports, including that of UCLA senior backup quarterback Chase Griffin, who tells Libit: “I think, in the literal sense, what Baker said is impossible.” DI SAAC Vice Chair Morgan Wynne, a former Oklahoma State softball student-athlete, insists the sentiment behind Baker’s remarks was “fairly correct,” arguing that “student-athletes who have wanted this…don’t have the knowledge of what that really means.” Libit also reports the SAAC plans to send out an “educational document" to its athlete campus representatives this week meant to spur an open discussion on employee status. + Seattle has parted ways with Volleyball HC Michelle Cole after four seasons. (link)
+ HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither reports that a source told HBCU Gameday that Southern Football HC Eric Dooley was informed over the weekend that he was being relieved of his duties after the Bayou Classic; however, Dooley tells WBRZ’s Michael Cauble that he hasn’t spoken with any administrators concerning his employment. Meanwhile, Gaither notes the university has remained quiet. (link)
+ With the Panthers currently sitting at 2-8, Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke acknowledged that “this season is not up to [Football HC Pat] Narduzzi’s or Pitt’s standards. He has raised the bar on expectations for our program with an ACC championship and Top 25 finishes the past two years. With the onset of the offseason, we will work together to thoroughly evaluate each aspect of our program, on and off the field, so that we can begin competing for ACC titles again.” (link)
+ Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning shuts down any rumors that he’ll leave Eugene this offseason: "Everything I want exists right here. I'm not going anywhere. There's zero chance that I would be coaching somewhere else. I've got unfinished business here. ... We have the resources, the tools, anybody that can't understand why you would want to be at this place, doesn't understand exactly what exists here." Lanning also says a “lot of coaches…don't say anything, one, because they don't want egg on their face when they decide to do something else; two, because they're concerned about things that I'm not concerned about, like getting a better contract. I'm taken care of extremely well here at Oregon. I have the resources I need here to be really, really successful. I'm not motivated by that. I'm motivated by winning." (link)
+ Minnesota Football HC PJ Fleck sounds off on the difficulty of recruiting and roster retention without NIL funding: “Things have completely changed and I think people have to put their head around them in college football of 2021 is not even close to where college football is in 2023. Especially in roster management, depth.” More: “You can look around the country and some of our best players that were here are best players somewhere else. And not only that, guys that are on our team right now, I hope we can hang on to. And we're going to do everything we can to do that. But the new world, like college football in 2023 and 2024 coming up with the new Big Ten, it's not even close to where college football was in 2021.” (link)

Florida Citrus Sports has released concept renderings of comprehensive renovations to Camping World Stadium. The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel notes the renderings showcase plans to replace the upper deck with 18,000 seats that would be redistributed to allow for wider aisles and more legroom for spectators. Additionally, a 360-degree concourse would connect all areas of the stadium. The drawings are part of FCS’s push to the Orange County Board of Commissioners for consideration for possible funding the Tourist Development Tax (TDT) provides. The board is set to meet today, and while TDT isn’t on the agenda, Murschel notes the topic could be discussed off-agenda. (link)

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand outlines ESPN’s next steps and notes the company will figure out their strategic partners in the coming months. “ESPN likely will offer a 10% equity stake in the network. Hearst already owns around 20% of ESPN. There could very well be multiple partners as ESPN wants the best hand it can have in distribution and product, along with a financial infusion of cash. … Partnering with an Apple, an Amazon or another large digital company, plus a mobile player, could be ESPN’s ideal scenario.” Marchand does not envision a partnership with the NFL coming to fruition but posits the NBA, MLB and NHL “all seem to make more sense if ESPN can get access to local rights for games. When ESPN goes direct-to-consumer, if it could include a la carte offering for local teams, it would give it a stronger hand. So, if, say, ESPN DTC began at $20-25 per month, but then you could add the (Minnesota) Timberwolves to your package for $5 to $10 per month, that adds up as a business proposition for consumers.” More from Marchand. Baylor, Georgetown, Liberty, Marquette, Norfolk State and Pepperdine were the DI schools that participated in Common Ground VI at the NCAA national office last month. The program brings together groups of individuals with diverse perspectives to break down barriers through conversations that foster empathy and understanding and help create respectful and supportive environments for all student-athletes. During the two-day event, facilitators led participants in group exercises, discussed individual and institutional biases and difficulties they have faced within their campus communities, how to use inclusive terminology and more. NCAA Director of Inclusion Jean Merrill: "The Common Ground leadership team wanted to approach Common Ground VI a bit differently. We recognized that many faith-based institutions find today's divisive sociocultural climate challenging to both uphold their faith-centered missions and adequately support their students, particularly their LGBTQ+ students. We wanted to create a supportive yet challenging space for faith-based institutions to learn the vision and mission of the Common Ground initiative, to build trust with the leadership team and to listen to and learn about what faith-based colleagues are facing on their campuses." Arizona State AD Ray Anderson has resigned, effective immediately. Anderson: "It has been a privilege to serve as ASU's athletic director for nearly a decade. We have entered an unprecedented era where the number and magnitude of changes in the college sports landscape are astounding. As I approach 70, these are not matters that my leadership would be able to corral during my tenure. Continuity of leadership will be needed, and I am choosing to step aside to let the university find that leader." The College Football Playoff held an introductory teleconference for incoming Executive Director Lt. General Richard Clark, during which outgoing Executive Director Bill Hancock said: “I have spoken with him previously and then again about this job, and I can tell you that he has a great understanding of what the job entails. I'll also note on a personal level you don't get to meet a general too often who is not only a strong leader but such a humble man. I think General Clark has just the right touch and he's going to do great.” Hancock also says the timeline for a transition is still being finalized but he plans to stay in the role for “much of 2024.” When asked why he wanted this position, Clark explained: “I'll be honest with you, it wasn't something that was on my radar until a search firm that was employed by the Board of Managers and the management committee came to me and asked if I would be willing to put my name in the hat. … To be a part of something as big as this for our country, it's unimaginable to me that the opportunity presented itself, but I am honored and grateful for the chance to be a part of it. I look forward to learning more and moving forward to help us achieve those goals.” Hancock was also asked whether Michigan AD Warde Manuel was participating in CFP deliberations this week and replied: “Yes.” (link)

Legends announces the launch of Legends College, a new business unit that will provide the company’s support to universities, collegiate organizations, and events. Vanderbilt AD Candice Lee joins the Vanderbilt Hustler podcast to talk about the college athletics landscape, her vision for the athletic department, streamlining the transfer process and more. “Commissioner Sankey often says it would be great to innovate on our own terms, and I think it's an opportunity for us in athletics to figure out what do we want the future to look like. So you're right, you can look at disruption as a negative or you can look at it as the catalyst needed to create change that allows something to be sustainable and something that we all believe in. You’re right, it's just a matter of perspective, but I think that it is a very complex situation, so it is not just as simple as pulling one lever. But I have to believe we can figure it out for the greater good.” Lee also says she favors a national standard for NIL, “but we like that our student-athletes have the opportunity to benefit from it.” Full podcast. Chicago State has secured commitments from individual and corporate partners as its fundraising efforts to support the addition of an FCS football team continue to go well, according to Extra Points publisher Matt Brown. “Not everything is completely in the bag yet, but I’m told there is legitimate optimism on the South Side.” On the conference side, Brown reports the Cougars’ options are limited and their preferred destination would be the MEAC; however, the school has also had recent conversations with the NEC, which now has only seven members after the departures of Merrimack and Sacred Heart, which left the league one team shy of the eight needed for FCS AQ status. “I’m not entirely sure, at this point, if these conversations are about permanent membership, or long-term affiliate invitation. But the interest, particularly from Chicago State, I’m told, is real. We’ll see if it goes anywhere.” (link)

Texas State’s football success this season is already paying dividends, according to the San Antonio Express-News’ Ricardo Delgado, who points out the university has seen a 10% uptick in applications this year while licensing revenue is up 25% YoY. Additionally, through five home games this season, Texas State has averaged 22,297 fans, a 24% increase over last year’s average attendance of 18,042. Average student attendance per game has doubled from last year as well. President Kelly Damphousse: “All ships do rise. And I think that sports that are not football understand how important football is. Men’s basketball to a lesser extent as well, because there’s a lot of revenue potential there as well. But the other sports are so dependent on a successful football program because that’s where the large revenue potential is.” (link)

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kendall Newman last week ruled the NCAA does not have to provide pay data for individual assistant coaches nationwide. The request was made by unpaid ACs who claim the NCAA and its DI schools unlawfully agreed to pay them nothing in a wage-fixing conspiracy. Newman wrote that bylaws allowing the NCAA to collect information from member schools “are not meant to provide a discovery mechanism for plaintiffs to utilize.” The coaches had argued that collecting the data themselves would be burdensome and require a “huge number of subpoenas.” (link)
