UC Merced is set to move to NCAA DII and join the CCAA, starting next year, with Bobcats set to become full DII members in 2027-28. Extra Points' Matt Brown adds: "UC Merced doesn’t fit the typical profile of an NAIA institution. For one, it’s a very new school (only established in 2005!). They’re also currently one of only two public schools in the CalPac (California State University Maritime Academy is the other), and easily the one with the largest enrollment. This reclassification was a long-standing goal of the university, and on paper, you can see why it would make more sense than affiliating with much smaller, or for-profit, programs." (link, link)

Jamestown will join the NSAA for 2024-25 after being ousted from the GPAC. President Polly Peterson: “We have enjoyed a long history of competitive rivalries with many of the universities in the league, and we are looking forward to returning to the conference where our student-athletes can continue to compete at a high level.” (link)

+ The expanded 20-team Football bracket was unveiled over the weekend, with Northwestern (IA), Grand View, Keiser and Georgetown as the top four seeds. With the expanded field, the top 12 will receive a first round bye. (link) 

+ The 40-team fields for Men’s (link) and Women’s Soccer (link) are ready for kick off starting Thursday. 

+ The Volleyball championship field is live, with opening round matchups set for Saturday. (link) 

Northwestern (IA) AD Tony Hoops sits down with Sioux County Radio’s The Daily Grind to talk about his first few months leading the Raiders. Hoops’ areas of focus: “As the leader, my goal is can we continue to push that envelope towards excellence in what we're trying to do. So, as I reflect, some of those things are, we have the ability to really grow our department, through retention. I'm a big believer that juniors and seniors will typically always be better than freshmen and sophomores. … We have to continue to increase our funding. The cost to success is real and we're so fortunate to have such great loyal donors who are so committed to the college and they're committed to enhancing the experiences of our student athletes, and just students as a whole. And so interacting with them has been great. So growing our board and being able to enhance Raider athletics in many different ways I think is an important component for us, too. Penn State (NCAA DI) Piazza Center Research Scholar Chris Zacharda and RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick examine the specific approach schools should take to combat hazing. Preventative measures include 360-degree education, routine culture audits and constant reinforcement. “On a regular basis, teams must reflect on whether they are perpetuating a climate in which it is appropriate—or even expected—to diminish others, or force newcomers into participating in problematic traditions to ‘prove’ their commitment. Systemic, cultural issues like these have to be dismantled at the organizational, not individual, level.” They also offer tools to help build a scalable student conduct program by recruiting allies across campus and rethinking reporting mechanisms. They advise: “Form relationships with Greek life advisers, athletics directors, and coaches. Create an internal network you can rely on to support your hazing prevention efforts and to help explore potential misconduct so that the truth comes to life faster. …. The reporting mechanisms available to your campus community should not only be anonymous and accessible, they should also make it easier for leadership to capture important information and hone in on credible cases. … With a more expansive approach to hazing prevention and targeted resources for investigations, higher education leaders have an opportunity to buck this unfortunate tradition.” (link)
