Former Arizona State AD Ray Anderson will still receive his $950K salary annually through 2026 for his new role as a professor of practice and senior adviser to the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. The State Press’ Katrina Michalak reports “There will be no buyout to his athletic contract, and his pay will remain the same, unadjusted for the change in assignment.” Raises or boosts to his pay from bonuses “remain unclear as part of his unchanged pay,” per Michalak. Also of note, “according to the contract, Anderson was required to notify the University of his resignation within 30 days.” (link)

Sticking in Tempe, former Arizona State AD Ray Anderson explains on The Anderson Healey Show that the recruiting investigation into the football program “wasn’t a factor whatsoever” in his decision to step down, indicating instead that “it would not have been smart, fair or in the best interests of the university to hold on for another two years knowing that I’m 69 years old.” Anderson says of the decision to bring on former Football HC Herm Edwards: "I don’t regret bringing Herm here. I do regret the outcome of the program because at the end of the day, we did not choose the right assistant coaches with the right frame of mind to be absolutely compliant and understand that no matter the difficulty of the circumstances, you had to play by the rules. I regret the poor decision of choosing coaches. … I regret that and I regret the impact it’s had on this program and in large part I regret that it’s taken so long to be resolved and, in the meantime, the recruiting punches we took from our competitors.” (link)

More details on Nebraska AD Trev Alberts’ new contract from CollegeAD, which reports both Alberts and UNL will review the contract every three years to increase Alberts’ salary should it fall below the average of the Big Ten’s three highest-paid ADs or the top 10 of any public school AD. As far as bonuses, Alberts can earn $100K for a department-wide APR of 970-984, $100K for a Big Ten football championship and $150K for a College Football Playoff national championship. Should Alberts terminate the agreement prior to December 31, 2024, he would owe the university $4.12M. In each subsequent year, that figure drops to $2.835M, $1.72M, $750K and $315K through 2028 respectively. After that, no buyout would be owed. Alberts would be due any remaining salary should the school terminate the agreement without cause. Additionally, the Huskers have agreed to provide Alberts with 35 hours of private, non-commercial flight time, and up to 15 unused hours can be rolled over each year. (link)

The NCAA has rejected the postseason waiver requests from Tarleton State, Jacksonville State and James Madison. A statement from JMU reads, in part: “We’re obviously disappointed in the outcome of the NCAA’s review of our request for bowl relief. We're saddened for our university community and, in particular, we're devastated for our football program, the coaches and student-athletes who have orchestrated an amazing season and earned the opportunity." The DI Board of Directors Administrative Committee on its decision to uphold the Council Coordination Committee’s decision: “Requirements for members transitioning into FBS are based on factors beyond athletics performance. They are intended to ensure schools are properly evaluating their long-term sustainability in the subdivision. … Furthermore, a pathway already exists without a waiver for both James Madison and Jacksonville State to access bowl games if there are not enough bowl-eligible teams at the end of the regular season.” (link, link)

Washington, on behalf of the 10 outbound Pac-12 schools, has officially filed a motion with the Washington Supreme Court seeking to put Tuesday’s decision to grant Washington State and Oregon State control of the league’s governing board on hold. In the appeal, the 10 schools argue the injunction unlawfully gives OSU and WSU “total control over the Conference” when an injunction is supposed to preserve the status quo, which the 10 exiting schools interpret as maintaining their rights as active conference members, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann. Michigan State narrowed its presidential search down to North Carolina Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz and UTSA President Taylor Eighmy, according to The State News’ Alex Walters and Theo Scheer; however, Isaacson, Miller Chair John Isaacson confirms to the student newspaper that Eighmy has since “dropped out.” MSU VP/University Spokesperson Emily Guerrant declined to comment other than to say she’s unaware of the MSU Board of Trustees’ deliberations and how Eighmy’s withdrawal will impact the process. Newly appointed Collegiate Sports Associates VP/Chief of Staff Marcy Lanoue joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss her move from San Diego to CSA's search and consulting team. Lanoue also discusses her career path and goals and explains why the move off campus to CSA specifically was the right fit for her and how she hopes to impact the industry in her new role. Lanoue: “What I’m most excited about is, yes it's a transition off campus; however, I believe in this role I'll be able to make a bigger impact than I've ever been able to make with one institution, and I feel really strongly about what we can do and the transformation of lives that we can have by me playing this role with CSA … The innovation that we have and our team has I'm excited for our future I think the sky's the limit for sure we've demonstrated that already of just some of the cool things that we're doing and the relationships were building across the country but I really believe that we are part of something special and we're going to take this thing to the next level.” (link)

Athletes.org has also launched A Seat at the Table, a video series in which student-athletes join Co-founder Jim Cavale to discuss the future of college sports. During the first episode, Cavale points out that “this dinner that we’re having right now, this is a dinner that all the ADs from the different ACC schools and all the presidents and media companies, they're doing these dinners weekly. They have the ACC summer meetings in June where they make all the big decisions on rules. … They have their meetings, but you all don’t have any meetings. And now we do. Tonight we're having a meeting and we're going to build a chapter that's going to be an even bigger meeting and we're going to get a lot of perspectives involved.” Cavale also notes a Power 5 AD recently said there is actually no disagreement between the schools and the student-athletes and that he would favor being able to reach an agreement with athletes through some entity. “We believe AO could be that entity.” Full video. Iowa Wrestling HC Tom Brands sounds off on the sports gambling investigation of UI and Iowa State student-athletes and asserts that the “questions being asked should be different. The questions being asked [should involve] why was University of Iowa and Iowa State targeted and the leadership of the NCAA is on record as saying there's a nationwide campus epidemic with sports wagering. … No one's asking the question why was the Department of Justice and the state of Iowa targeting Iowa State University and the University of Iowa? No one has asked that question.” Brands goes on to address the new reinstatement guidelines concerning sports wagering and says: “What happens is because the NCAA leadership has spoken and because the membership doesn’t get along with the leadership, they just go the opposite way. Or, ‘Oh, well, we listened and we modernized we went from permanent ban to a one-year ban a one-year ban on a penalty changed from something that is a nationwide epidemic. These guys they didn't lie, they didn't cheat, they did nothing illegal. A 21-year-old can gamble, a 21-year-old is a junior in college. A one-year ban is a death sentence most of the time.” (link)

Florida Deputy AD Lynda Tealer tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel she is withdrawing her name for consideration for the Tulane AD opening. (link); NOLA.com’s Guerry Smith reports on more “confirmed” AD interviews in Atlanta earlier this week for the Green Wave: Tennessee Deputy AD for Championship Resources Mónica Lebrón, LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn, Cincinnati Deputy AD/CFO John Daniel, Texas Deputy AD/COO Shawn Eichorst & former Penn State Deputy AD/former San Francisco AD Scott Sidwell. Also of note: “A decision on whom Tulane will hire likely will not be made until around Dec. 1, a source said.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports the “Pac-2” is in “ongoing discussions with the Mountain West Conference about a scheduling partnership” for next year. “The potential one-year agreement would add inventory and value to the MWC’s current television deal. One involved party said to expect news later this week or early next week.” Financially, it remains unclear what that would mean for both the Pac-2 and the MWC. Because a scheduling partnership doesn’t constitute expansion, one source tells Canzano it’s “more likely they are going to have to go and ask the TV guys nicely what they would pay for OSU and WSU.” Meanwhile, Canzano reveals, per an Oregon state lawmaker, that OSU last week asked for $30M in assistance due to the Pac-12’s dissolution. According to that lawmaker, the Beavers “will have to raise tuition and student fees if they don’t get it.” More from Canzano. (link)

What’s next for the legal dispute between Washington State and Oregon State and the outgoing Pac-12 members? The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points out there is no guarantee that the Washington Supreme Court will accept the case and that it could instead be passed on to an appellate court in Spokane. “The Hotline won’t begin to guess how the appeal process might unfold. But we know this: Just as it’s better to have the call on the field in your favor before it goes to the replay booth, so would you rather be the plaintiffs than the defendants at this point.” Wilner also reports that “not all 10 outbound schools have taken the same approach to the lawsuit. According to a source, there are hardliners within the group that prevented the two sides from reaching a settlement through mediation.” Perhaps, Wilner continues, yesterday’s decision will soften their stance on a settlement. As one source puts it: “This is basically a divorce hearing. It will come down to what the alimony payment is.” As for what happens to the $420M in revenue the league is due in 2023-24, a source tells Wilner the “bylaws dictate reasonable treatment,” which may prevent WSU and OSU from hoarding that money. “The notion that (WSU and OSU) would take all the money and divide it between the two — that would put everyone right back in gridlock. And the hope is to get out of this gridlock.” (link)

Athletes.org has launched its first two ACC chapters, the AO Chapter for ACC Men's Basketball Athletes and the AO Chapter for ACC Women’s Basketball Athletes. The chapters have been co-founded by current student-athletes, including North Carolina women’s basketball player Deja Kelly, Duke men’s basketball player Jeremy Roach and UNC men’s hoops student-athlete Armando Bacot. Meanwhile, AO has also added former Penn State AD Sandy Barbour and former Syracuse Men’s Basketball HC Jim Boeheim to its board of directors, which also includes Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, former America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen, NFLPA COO Terri Smith and others. By joining the athletes together according to their respective sports, AO Co-Founder Jim Cavale explains: “It allows us to start organizing their voice and what they think on these key issues now, through voting in our app, through chapters having founders that are current athletes that can represent the thoughts and voice of their peers in their chapter. And the chapters (also) allow us to generate group licensing deal flow, because now we've got a much smaller focus group for brands and licensees to spend dollars.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown provides an FAQ for EA Sports’ upcoming college football game and points out that, as of right now, EA is not planning on including FCS teams. It’s possible, however, that FCS programs could be added via a DLC (downloadable content) down the line. As far as game features, Brown reports it’s too early to know details about recruiting, dynasties, etc. because the game is still being made; however, an EA employee tells Brown that “customization will be an aspect of EA SPORTS College Football when it launches in Summer 2024. We’ll have more details to share in the near future.” Additionally, Brown notes several members of ESPN’s College GameDay crew have recorded audio for the game as well as some ESPN personalities who are not a regular part of the GameDay broadcast. “ESPN has a previous licensing agreement with EA Sports. I don’t know for a fact that broadcast crews or IP from FOX, CBS, or NBC will not be in the game, but I assume that they probably wouldn’t be.” More from Brown. (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) explains the decision to remove cannabinoids from the list of banned substances amid concerns by some that doing so promotes or condones cannabinoid use. Connecticut Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician/Committee Vice Chair Deena Casiero: "We know that the previous cannabinoid policies and sanctions were not an effective deterrent to cannabinoid use. We should be focusing on student-athletes who have or are at risk for cannabis use disorder. Randomly testing at NCAA championships is not the best way to identify or help student-athletes with use issues. The best way is to encourage schools to educate and test within an established harm-reduction strategy in their local spaces." Ohio State Lead Sport Psychologist/CSMAS Chair Jamey Houle adds: "We're trying to help these young adults understand and manage something that is present versus saying don't do it, or if you do it, you're bad. It is a more complicated evolution and understanding of drug misuse. Drug misuse is a mental health issue. We don't punish student-athletes for having an eating disorder. We don't punish student-athletes for having depression, and we shouldn't punish student-athletes for drug misuse." (link)

Following a decision from the Infractions Appeals Committee, the Committee on Infractions has reduced the financial penalty for the Cal State Northridge’s men's basketball program, which was found in December 2022 to have violated recruiting rules. Specifically, CSUN's former HC and two former ACs had impermissible on- and off-campus contacts with prospects during the COVID-19 recruiting dead period and provided those prospects with impermissible recruiting inducements. The appeals committee removed one aggravating factor and applied one mitigating factor to the school's case. In light of those factors, the COI reconsidered the case classification. Though the previously assessed financial penalty of $5,000 plus 1% of the men's basketball budget falls within the legislated penalty range for a Level II-Standard case, the panel agreed that some relief was warranted given the adjustments to the aggravating and mitigating factors. As a result, the panel reduced the school's fine to $5,000 plus 0.5% of the men's basketball budget. (link)

Former San Jose State Director of Sports Medicine Scott Shaw was sentenced to 24 months in prison, one year of supervised release, a $15K fine and restitution to be determined at a later date after being convicted of sexually abusing female student-athletes under the guise of providing medical treatment. DOJ Civil Rights Division Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke: “This sentence should send a clear message that public school officials who exploit their positions of authority to sexually abuse and harass students will face serious consequences for their actions. The Justice Department will not tolerate violations of civil rights committed under the guise of legitimate medical treatment by those in positions of power and trust.” (link)
