Whitman County (WA) Superior Court Judge Gary Libey granted Washington State and Oregon State’s request for a preliminary injunction, granting them control of the Pac-12’s governing board; however, Libey stayed his ruling until the end of the week as the conference seeks an appeal from the Washington Supreme Court. Libey also explained that “This is not a shutout. The (preliminary injunction) is going to be modified to make sure the other 10 are still treated in a fair manner. … Nobody’s going to take advantage of somebody else.” Wazzu President Kirk Schulz and AD Pat Chun: “We are pleased with the court’s common-sense decision today. It has always been our view that the future of the Pac-12 should be determined by the remaining members, not by those schools that are leaving the conference. This position is consistent with the action the Pac-12 Board of Directors took when the first two schools (USC and UCLA) announced their departure from the conference more than a year ago.” During the hearing, UW attorneys argued the departing schools had not given notice of withdrawal and should remain on the board, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes their “case was based on an interpretation of language in the bylaws about the ‘delivery of notice’ provision. Libey was unmoved and referenced USC and UCLA losing their board seats, saying: “I grew up where conduct spoke louder than words.” More. (link)

A statement from the outgoing Pac-12 members reads, in part: “We are disappointed with the decision and are immediately seeking review in the Washington Supreme Court and requesting to put on hold implementation of this decision. As members of the Pac-12, participating in ongoing and scheduled competitions, we are members of the board under the Pac-12 bylaws. We have the right to the revenue earned by our schools during the 2023-2024 academic year, which is necessary in order to operate our athletics programs and to provide mental and physical health services, academic support, and other support programs for our student-athletes.” Full statement. Baltimore Ravens HC John Harbaugh says his brother, Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh, had “his phones, his computers and all of that stuff” looked into as part of the NCAA’s investigation into Michigan’s in-person scouting allegations, and “he’s come through this thing with flying colors. I don’t know what they’re trying to get, but they don’t have anything of substance,” according to The Athletic. (link)

Georgia leapfrogged Ohio State to take the top spot in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings. The Bulldogs and Buckeyes are followed by Michigan, Florida State, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Alabama, Missouri and Louisville in the top 10, respectively. Full rankings. (link)

The Arizona Republic’s Greg Moore contends that Arizona State’s “athletic department faces aspirations from its fanbase that don’t match their donations, captivation, fascination or preoccupation. Translation? They love to complain, but they don’t bother to spend money or show up to games. … There’s certainly going to be rejoicing and thanksgiving over Anderson’s resignation, but I’m worried that it could be a careful-what-you-wish-for situation.” Moore goes on to write: “I’ll try to put this in simple black-and-white: From the day [former Football HC Herm] Edwards was announced as head football coach, it was like there was some sort of sick race to paint his hire as a dark mark on a pristine, lily-white program. Never mind that ASU football hadn’t been to a Rose Bowl since the Clinton administration. The Edwards tenure was undone from within by people who like their grapes sour and their football pro-Graham-s mediocre. … The next ASU athletic director will need to figure out how to help recruits and current athletes leverage a massive Phoenix metro area population and alumni base to make some money while they’re on campus. And they’ll also need to be a history buff since they could be subject to a witch hunt regardless of whether they sink or swim.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger tells HBCU Legends that an “article about the school parting ways with [Football HC Clarence] McKinney is not accurate” and adds: “We have not made a decision, and will make a determination after the season.” HBCU Sports yesterday reported that the decision had been made to let McKinney go. (link)
+ Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders suggests he has no plans to leave Boulder. “I am here. My mother is here. My sister is here. My dog is here. My daughter is here. Three of my sons are here. … I get mail here. I pay taxes here. I’m here.” (link)
+ Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell will not be a candidate for the Texas A&M HC position, according to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who reports: “After backchannel communications were initiated by the Aggies, it was made clear that Campbell would be staying in the NFL with the Lions.” Campbell played tight end for the Aggies from 1995-98. + The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has selected Chelsea FC Women Manager Emma Hayes as its new coach. Hayes served as the HC at Iona from 2003 to 2006. With James Madison expecting to hear back from the NCAA this week regarding its postseason football prospects, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports Tarleton State is requesting a reconsideration of its status for the FCS playoffs. The Texans argue that the “current situation not only contradicts the principle of student-athlete welfare, but also limits our student-athletes’ chances to engage in professional athletics post-college. We understand that probation stipulations were in place when Tarleton State entered into this arrangement with the NCAA. However, we urge you to consider the significant changes that have occurred in the landscape of intercollegiate athletics since our initial waiver request in May 2022. The NCAA itself has undergone drastic changes to its Constitution and membership requirements, and we believe these shifts should be taken into account.” (link)

Portland has received a $1M gift from the Tom and Meg Names Family Foundation to support student-athlete leadership and two facilities projects: the Patrick E., Becker, Sr. Track & Field Complex and the Tom & Meg Names Family Foundation Beach Volleyball Courts. Pilots AD Scott Leykam: "The contribution by the Tom and Meg Names Family Foundation to our Pilots LEAD program is significant. Our student-athletes have been asking for, and will greatly benefit from support toward life skills, academics, and NIL. We can't thank Monica and Erin enough for their continued generosity." (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Robert W. Gettleman has denied a request for a temporary restraining order from Chicago State men’s basketball student-athletes Matt and Ryan Bewley, who were seeking immediate eligibility. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter tells On3’s Pete Nakos: “I’m assuming the judge denied it because he decided there wasn’t any threat of irreparable harm to them not playing a few games. To get a TRO there has to be an immediate threat of irreparable harm or there needs to be a failure for merits of success. I’m assuming that’s not the basis that doesn’t signal if the NCAA is going to win or lose.” (link)

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts inks a new 8-year contract that immediately increases his base pay from $853K to $1.7M. Annual increases will eventually get the base to $2.1M. Also of note: “His existing contract includes a $500,000 retention bonus if he stays through September 2025. But the new one adds $300,000 in annual bonuses each year thereafter, and a $3 million completion bonus if he finishes the contract in 2031.” (link)

Tulane Football HC Willie Fritz voices his support for Deputy AD for Operations & Capital Projects Kortne Gosha as the Green Wave’s next AD: “I talked to the powers that be, they’ve asked my opinion, I’ve given it to them. [...] My opinion is pretty well known, he’s a dude that’s around here all the time. I’m not the guy who makes that decision. I give them my opinion of what I’d like to see. Tulane is going to make their decision, that’s how it works at universities.” (link) Separately, CollegeAD is reporting Gosha, along with Florida Deputy AD Lynda Tealer interviewed yesterday in Atlanta with Tulane brass. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reacts to Arizona State AD Ray Anderson’s resignation, and observes the “timing and wording of the announcement were curious. Why Monday instead of immediately following the regular season? Or instead of any day in the past two years? The ‘effective immediately’ piece certainly suggests it wasn’t Anderson’s call — that he’s going out on [ASU President Michael] Crow’s terms, not his own. Our presumption is the move connects directly and deeply to the NCAA recruiting violations, as opposed to general mismanagement of football specifically and athletics generally.” Wilner goes on to contend that ASU will be a coveted job, as it “has a well-resourced athletic department in a huge media market with an enormous alumni base and in-state talent.” As such, he believes the “Sun Devils would be well served to hire a candidate who knows the school and the area, who’s thoroughly engaging and endlessly energetic — the administrative version of football coach Kenny Dillingham.” Crow, Wilner continues, must resist his instincts as an innovator and hire the “anti-Anderson. [ASU] needs someone who will connect with the community, not alienate the constituents. … The Sun Devils have a chance to thrive if they can just, for once, stay out of their own way. Here’s an outside-the-box idea for Crow: Hire an AD from inside college sports.” (link)

Expanding March Madness is “not necessarily” inevitable, according to NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt, who explains: "[The Men's Basketball Committee] is doing their due diligence to consider every perspective and every angle. It's the national championship, right? You have to make sure the tournament is special as it's always been and yet, you have to consider the changes and the things that are going on in the business – conference realignment – that may have some impact and need to be considered. The forward-looking way, rather than looking backwards.” Gavitt also remarks that he's not concerned about Power 5 teams attempting to shift the NCAA Tournament in their favor or create their own event. "No concern from the committee's perspective on that. That particular angle hasn't been a concern or considered in the process." (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben, Christopher Kamrani and Justin Williams talk with five Northwestern State football student-athletes about the Demons’ canceled season following the fatal shooting of teammate Ronnie Caldwell Jr. Of the five players, four raised concerns about a disconnect between administrators and players in the decision-making process, and offensive lineman Jordan McClaine remarks: “As a team, we wanted to continue the season. We worked all summer long. Regardless of our record, we wanted to finish that season out. To have it canceled like that, it sucked. At least 90% of the team wanted the season going. As for our mental health, that would have been the best thing for us. Canceling the season, now you’re just giving college kids a bunch of free time. That’s not what you need.” Demons AD Kevin Bostian tells The Athletic that former Football HC Brad Laird held two meetings with senior members of the team, and “it was not unanimous, but the vast majority of them said, ‘We cannot move forward; we don’t want to play.” Meanwhile, the uncertainty regarding who is responsible for Caldwell’s death is “weighing heavily on a lot of people,” according to McClaine. “Excuse my language, but we’re pissed about that.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos talks with the parents of several football recruits about the state of NIL as the mother of a top 100 recruit tells Nakos: “The first set of numbers that I got, it was used as a, ‘We won’t go any lower than this.’ Little bit over $300K. I got another school that tried to offer $200K per year. There’s a lot of irregularity. I’m not sure if parents even know how to negotiate it or even ask for more. I’m surprised a lot of times, I’m like, ‘Wow, I think they just gave you a number and you just took it.’” Increasingly, funding from collectives is being earmarked for the transfer portal, as one collective leader explains a top-10 QB in the portal is worth seven figures, but a “high school quarterback isn’t worth anything because they’re not going to start. … That’s why in professional sports, rookies make so much less than free agents. You want a guaranteed veteran more than taking a flier on a rookie.” More. (link)

"I know what's going on. Hunter Yurachek knows what is going on. But no one else really does. It's just opinion about what is going on...but it affects our recruits so we spent a lot of time on that yesterday. My job is to get ready for FIU. I'm not worried about my job security at all. Fairleigh Dickinson will unveil a men’s hoops new locker room and film room this week, “months after it had to scout opponents with dripping shower heads above it because of space issues on campus,” ESPN’s Myron Medcalf reports, adding donors provided $500K in funding after the team became just the second 16-seed to upset a 1-seed in March. Knights AD Bradford Hurlbut on how success spurred philanthropy: "When I would be out there preaching, I was preaching without evidence, asking for belief without evidence, and now I've got evidence of it. Just how proud those people are. To hear from people that graduated in '68, '70, '72 that said, 'You've made my life. I can die happy now.' And the tears they have in their eyes when they're talking to you. That's immeasurable, right? They are opening up their checkbooks and they want to be a part of it and it makes our [request] that much easier." Medcalf also notes attendance for this year’s open house for potential 2024-25 students was up 48% over last year. (link)
