Henderson State AD Shawn Jones will step down at the end of the calendar year to become the Senior Deputy AD/COO at Southern Miss (DI). Interim Chancellor Bob Fisher: "Shawn Jones has led the coaches and staff at Henderson into building one of the most successful athletic programs in the nation. The program has been transformed into one that proves that academic achievement and competitive success can be full partners in college athletics. Saint Leo removes the interim tag from AD Marcal Lazenby, who has been leading the Lions since July. President Edward Dadez: "We are fortunate to have someone on our staff with Marcal's background and level of experience. Marcal has been an NCAA Division II student-athlete, previously served as a Division II athletic director, and has been with Saint Leo for the last six years. He has a strong commitment toward achieving athletic and academic excellence, as well as a deep appreciation for our core values, which shape all we do at Saint Leo." (link)

Wingate Football HC/Interim AD Joe Reich will transition to the full-time AD chair after 23 seasons leading the Bulldogs on the gridiron. Reich: "I feel very good about taking over as AD. I think there's tremendous potential. Facility-wise, we want to get the Smart Center finished. That would be an unbelievable game-changer for us. And then, what facilities are next? What do we need to build? What do we need to fix? What do we need to replace? We're obviously very good to begin with, but we've got so much potential for what we can be." Augusta AD Ryan Erlacher sits down with The Augusta Press’ Jaxon Garner to recap his first year leading the Jaguars, which included checking off around 60 items from his initial wish list from coaches, including a litany of facility upgrades for Baseball, Softball, Track & Field, Golf and more. Erlacher: “The biggest change we’ve made is we have just been a bit more intentional with how we emphasize the importance of academics. […] From a competitive standpoint, I felt like the athletics department was one that we could compete for national championships here in every sport. You had tremendous leadership with former AD Clint Bryant for years, but there’s a lot that still needs to be done. I love to build and grow, and I saw some really good opportunity for that. […] The biggest challenge has been continuing to find ways to be creative, to find ways to get things done, never settling for status quo and always pushing to make sure our department has what they need to be successful.” (link)

The NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) explains the decision to remove cannabinoids from the list of banned substances amid concerns by some that doing so promotes or condones cannabinoid use. Connecticut (DI) Director of Sports Medicine/Head Team Physician/Committee Vice Chair Deena Casiero: "We know that the previous cannabinoid policies and sanctions were not an effective deterrent to cannabinoid use. We should be focusing on student-athletes who have or are at risk for cannabis use disorder. Randomly testing at NCAA championships is not the best way to identify or help student-athletes with use issues. The best way is to encourage schools to educate and test within an established harm-reduction strategy in their local spaces." Ohio State (DI) Lead Sport Psychologist/CSMAS Chair Jamey Houle adds: "We're trying to help these young adults understand and manage something that is present versus saying don't do it, or if you do it, you're bad. It is a more complicated evolution and understanding of drug misuse. Drug misuse is a mental health issue. We don't punish student-athletes for having an eating disorder. We don't punish student-athletes for having depression, and we shouldn't punish student-athletes for drug misuse." (link)

+ Livingstone receives a $1M donation from an anonymous donor. President Anthony Davis: “This is the most significant unrestricted individual gift the college has received from a non-alumni donor. + Lake Erie sits on more solid financial footing than two months ago, which The Chronicle of Higher Education’s David Jessee and Dan Bauman detail as the college’s creditors balked at an initial ask to defer payments through April 2024, return around $780K to pay vendors and allow a prospective lender priority on collateral for a new $2.5M credit line. Amidst the troubling landscape, LEC has raised $1.3M this year, double its FY23 total, modified gift restrictions, cut six figures in expenses and received a $1.2M grant this week that all give President Jennifer Schuller confidence LEC will make it through the year, regardless of the bondholders’ decision.
