Michigan has relieved Football AC Chris Partridge of his duties, and Tom VanHaaren cites a source as saying the dismissal stems from Partridge’s lack of cooperation with the NCAA investigation. ESPN’s Pete Thamel points out the following language used by the Wolverines to explain Partridge’s termination: “As we discussed today, the university has received evidence that you have failed to abide by the university directive not to discuss an ongoing NCAA investigation with anyone associated with the Michigan football program or others and as a result has determined that you have failed to satisfactorily perform your duties." Former Cincinnati Football HC Rick Minter, the father of Wolverines DC Jesse Minter, will take over Partridge’s duties coaching linebackers. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger and Dan Wetzel report the NCAA this week presented Michigan with new evidence indicating that a booster may have at least partially funded Connor Stalions’ advanced scouting operation and that an assistant coach allegedly participated in the destruction of evidence on a computer after the scandal broke. “Multiple sources say that Partridge is not alleged at this time of knowing about the advanced scouting by Stalions, but acted after the fact to cover up evidence. Sources tell Yahoo Sports that a booster — named in the NCAA report as ‘Uncle T’ — helped fund the alleged scheme, giving Stalions thousands of dollars for expenses.” (link)

Michigan donor Tim Smith insists he is not the “Uncle T” identified by the NCAA’s investigation. He tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “I don’t recognize being known as ‘Uncle T’ and I will refute that myself. I never funded Connor. To say I knew him is perhaps overstating it. I said hi to him. I’ve spoken to him more since he left Michigan to make sure the young man is OK.” Nonetheless, Smith was dropped today as a member of the Wolverines-focused Champions Circle. Smith goes on to tell Dellenger that Stalions informed him he self-funded his sign-stealing effort by selling a home for more than $100K. “He told me it was all him (paying for the scheme). That’s what he told me. I think there are people wanting to throw some people under the bus. ‘It’s all Connor and someone else!’ If Uncle T is me, I’m not aware that it is me.” Additionally, Smith says it’s his understanding that former AC Chris Partridge “told people not to talk” during the NCAA’s investigation. In addition to acknowledging that eliminating sports was a possibility due to a significant budget miscalculation, Arizona President Robert Robbins floated the idea of severing athletics from the university, telling faculty: “I have suggested that we move athletics out of the university and have it be run by a board but with the president still making decisions about who the athletic director is.” (link)

A federal court clerk in the Western District of Virginia tells the Daily News-Record’s Shane Mettlen that it is her understanding a civil suit against the NCAA over its denial of James Madison’s request for postseason eligibility will be filed there tomorrow. (link)

Oregon and Oregon State are working to continue playing the Civil War, the annual football matchup between the two schools, according to JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher. “If the Civil War rivalry is going to be played in 2024, Sept. 14 is the date the Ducks and Beavers hope to do it, sources told me. OSU has an open date on that Saturday and Oregon is scheduled to host Boise State that day at Autzen Stadium. Boise State and Oregon are under contract for a 2-for-1 series that has the Broncos hosting the Ducks in 2025 and traveling to Eugene in 2024 and 2026. The Civil War revival talks have centered on Oregon canceling the first two games of the agreement, opening the door to a home-and-home series in 2024 and 2025 with Oregon State.” The contract between the Broncos and Ducks calls for the visiting team to receive $300K in 2024 (Boise State) and 2025 (Oregon), while BSU will get $800K to play in Eugene in 2026. The Montana State Board of Regents has approved construction of a new 120K-square-foot indoor practice facility. As of now, the Bobcats are $3M away from the project’s $25M fundraising goal. Bobcats AD Leon Costello: "It is essential for our student-athletes who compete and train outdoors to have space 365 days a year. We have expectations of deep FCS playoff runs and need training space for indoor track season and spring football practice, all of which occur during winter weather months. Our student-athletes are training around the clock and competing against the best nationally. We need training facilities to support their continued success, regardless of the climate." (link)

Missouri’s Board of Curators voted to keep moving on a revamp of Memorial Stadium’s North Concourse, along with other upgrades to the venue. Key details: “University of Missouri President Mun Choi designated an architect selection committee, chaired by MU Director of Athletics Desireé Reed-Francois, to recommend an architectural firm to design the project and meet budgetary and timeline requirements. Upon President Choi's approval and agreed-upon financial terms, it is anticipated that the Athletics department will present the firm for board approval no later than January 10, 2024. It is expected MU will report back to the board on or before its meeting on April 18, 2024, to present pre-design programming and planning for Memorial Stadium improvements, including plans for project scope, budget and fundraising.” (link)

The Schenectady Planning Commission granted conditional approval for the construction of a new ice hockey arena at Mohawk Harbor. The 2,200-seat arena would serve as home to Union College’s hockey teams, though Union’s involvement with the project has yet to be specified. As part of the conditional approval, developers must appear before the Planning Commission next month to show renderings of what the arena will look like from the rear. Bailey & Glasser, LLP attorney Arthur Bryant tells On3’s Eric Prisbell he is “outraged” by the recent deal through the Utah-focused Crimson Collective arranged for every Utes football student-athlete to receive a Dodge Ram. Bryant, who has represented more women in Title IX litigation than anyone else in the country, calls it a “blatant, in-your-face” case of “extraordinary sex discrimination,” adding: “It should be a huge Title IX concern for the university. It appears to be a flagrant, stunningly obvious violation of Title IX that could cost the school millions of dollars.” The best avenue for recourse, Bryant continues, would be women being willing to sue, as “almost every female student-athlete at Utah appears to have an extremely strong Title IX claim.” Utah maintains the event in which the deal was announced was entirely the collective’s despite it happening at Rice-Eccles’ Stadium with Utah logos prominently displayed in the video, and Bryant contends: “Those facts alone undercut any notion that the university was not involved in the truck deal – and that there was a clear separation between the collective and the university regarding this deal. Female student-athletes at Utah need to hold the school accountable – no one else will do it. The history of Title IX has shown that women don’t get equality unless they are willing to fight for it.” (link)
