McDaniel promotes Asst. AD for Internal Operations Jeremy Shepherd to AD, succeeding AD Adam Hertz who retired earlier this year. NCAA President Charlie Baker talked with student-athletes at Franklin, where he acknowledged that student-athletes are dealing with challenges that his generation never had to. “You all are public figures in your world and on your campus, and therefore you are subject to some of the same BS that I was subject to when I was governor of Massachusetts. I’m a grown-up…I don’t care what people say about me on social media. I don’t care. It doesn’t matter. But I think it’s really tough to be a young person who’s getting noise — and vicious incoming, in some cases — from people they don’t know about the way they played, what they didn’t get right, what they look like and all the rest, and that’s an issue I’ve heard about across all three divisions.” Baker also pointed out the average age of an NCAA official is 55 and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to retain younger officials. Surveys have shown that officials cite the behavior of coaches, fans and parents as the primary reason for leaving the profession. “The beatdown that a lot of these (young officials) were getting from a lot of people in the stands and along the sidelines was just enough to drive them away.” On the potential for Congress to enact a federal bill focused on college athletics, Baker explained that the “big question mark in my mind is, just given all the other stuff on their plate, is this going to be one of the things they get to or not? We’re going to continue to push.” (link)

Alfred State will close its pool after this season, stating: “A professional engineering study has indicated that without a years-long pool facility rebuild, operating the pool could damage the building. Plans are actively underway to facilitate supporting the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Program's and Alfred State will actively work to minimize the impact on current student athletes and other pool users.” (link)

Penn State (DI) Piazza Center Research Scholar Chris Zacharda and RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick examine the specific approach schools should take to combat hazing. Preventative measures include 360-degree education, routine culture audits and constant reinforcement. “On a regular basis, teams must reflect on whether they are perpetuating a climate in which it is appropriate—or even expected—to diminish others, or force newcomers into participating in problematic traditions to ‘prove’ their commitment. Systemic, cultural issues like these have to be dismantled at the organizational, not individual, level.” They also offer tools to help build a scalable student conduct program by recruiting allies across campus and rethinking reporting mechanisms. They advise: “Form relationships with Greek life advisers, athletics directors, and coaches. Create an internal network you can rely on to support your hazing prevention efforts and to help explore potential misconduct so that the truth comes to life faster. …. The reporting mechanisms available to your campus community should not only be anonymous and accessible, they should also make it easier for leadership to capture important information and hone in on credible cases. … With a more expansive approach to hazing prevention and targeted resources for investigations, higher education leaders have an opportunity to buck this unfortunate tradition.” (link)

Fitch Ratings is projecting a decline in net tuition growth between two and four percent, with growing discount rates, up to over 56% for first-time undergrads, contributing to limited growth. Fitch also expects net tuition growth to remain limited beyond 2024 at rates below the growth of overall expenses. Of note: “Tuition growth between public and private institutions has diverged post-pandemic. Tuition increases at public universities flattened, and Fitch expects future growth to remain modest. Public institutions continue to have more competitive headroom with pricing. However, they often face pressure at the state level to preserve access and affordability through sticker-price freezes, scholarships and/or financial aid, sometimes as a condition of increased state appropriations. Private college tuition pricing has briefly returned to pre-pandemic growth levels, although Fitch expects the pace of increases to abate. Recent growth rates largely reflect catch-up increases following tuition freezes during the pandemic. Those that have resumed increases are managing the need to balance inflationary pressures and demand considerations. The number of institutions, both public and private, that froze undergraduate tuition remained elevated through the 2022-2023 academic year.” (link)
