Tulane officially announces Northern Iowa AD David Harris as the Green Wave’s next AD. Harris: “My career began supporting the academic pursuits of student-athletes and it has always been important to me to find a place that combines world-class academics with a pursuit of excellence in all of its athletic endeavors. President Fitts is committed to the well-being, academic achievement and lifelong success of Tulane’s student-athletes and continuing to build an athletics program that matches the university’s nationally renowned research and academics.” Harris will officially take over on January 3. Tulane Football HC Willie Fritz insists his endorsement of Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects Kortne Gosha for the role won’t make it uncomfortable: “I got asked a question while I was in here and I answered it. I think I put in my answer there that I don’t make the decisions for the athletic department, I only do it for the football program.” Fritz, whose comments came before Harris’ hire was made official, added that he’d welcome the next AD “with open arms” regardless of who it was. “We’re excited about it. Anytime you get somebody new that comes in here to your athletic department, your university, you want to do a great job at helping them make the adjustment.” (link)

Clemson AD Grant Neff acknowledges the Tigers have had several conversations about conference affiliation: “We talk with everybody internally and externally…just to be well-positioned and well-read. There’s just so many moving aspects of collegiate athletics. That active dialogue, internally and externally, remains to be very present. … We have consultants and support that we look to do that, and it’s my job to continue to position us and to be connected and to be nimble and strategic as it relates to the changing landscape.” Neff insists, though, that the Tigers are committed to the ACC, “and we’re going to continue to be great members of the conference that we’re in. That’s really important. That means day-to-day, in meetings and in strategy and football scheduling, all of those things. How we talk about that publicly, like I’m doing here and otherwise. We have a lot of staff and coaches and public meetings that are really important, that we’re aligned and being great members of the conference we’re in. That’s our obligation as Clemson. We have a duty to help raise the value of our conference and the ACC, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do while looking out and doing what’s best for Clemson.” (link)

Washington State AD Pat Chun tells KING 5 Seattle that realignment will continue. “Someone asked me this week, ‘When does realignment start again? I said, ‘When the clock hits zero at the national championship game. The tectonic plates beneath the surface of College athletics are unstable and continue to move. … Washington State – and Oregon State, for that matter – just want to make sure we have all the best available options on the table. And as the landscape continues to shift, we just have to ensure that we make the right decisions and we continue to position ourselves in the best position forward.” Chun says it’s actually “almost inexplicable” how successful Wazzu has been over the years “always having half the budget, half the resources. It’s really a tribute to all the people who have worn our jerseys and understand that we may not be able to out-resource schools, but we can always out-people schools, and that’s kind of been Washington State.” (link)

James Madison has pressed pause on pursuing further legal action against the NCAA for postseason eligibility and explains: “Based on consultation with and advice of our outside counsel, the loss to Appalachian State on Saturday changed the landscape in terms of the nature and timing of our legal options, including the diminished viability of a lawsuit against the NCAA. … The university’s focus now is on getting the football team to a bowl game, and it appears that such a result is still a strong possibility. We could still file an action against the NCAA later if needed to receive a bowl invitation, but for the time being, there was a strong consensus that proceeding with legal action did not make sense.” Full statement. Attorneys for Ole Miss football student-athlete DeSanto Rollins provided examples of what they argue constitute Rebels Football HC Lane Kiffin treating Rollins differently than white players, including how an unnamed kicker remained on the team after a failed drug test. “All of Kiffin’s actions and inactions were intentional, deliberate, malicious, grossly negligent, negligent, and taken in reckless disregard for the rights and mental health of Rollins. All of the actions and inactions [of employees of the Ole Miss athletics department] were grossly negligent, negligent, and taken in reckless disregard for the rights and mental health of Rollins. Kiffin was malevolently ingenious in the manner he discriminated against Rollins.” Rollins’ lawyers also cited several examples of how he is effectively not a member of the team after Ole Miss pointed out he was still on the roster and still has a scholarship, including his not being invited to team meals, not receiving a jersey or other apparel, not being included on travel to away games and not being invited to participate in Senior Day. AD for Compliance and Student-Athlete Development/SWA as Tigers AD Adam Tschuor joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the opportunity, including what would make a candidate a good fit, his vision for the role, the overall culture in Stockton, metrics for success and more. Tschuor also talks about his first 90 days in the role and explains he’s tried to instill a new sense of enthusiasm and energy as well as a renewed focus on competitive success. “Championships have been a little lagging here the last decade for the Pacific Tigers. It’s something that was not lost on me as I was going through my interview process and something I really want to change here in terms of taking winning very seriously and winning West Coast Conference titles and competing in NCAA tournaments. … Now I’m just being tasked with – because I’m a revenue guy by trade – finding the resources to be able to inject into the programs so we can take advantage of that energy and enthusiasm.” More on Connect. + Virginia has a new permanent Field Hockey HC in Acting HC Ole Keusgen, who has been with the program for the last nine seasons & recently led the Cavs to a NCAA Tournament semifinal appearance. (link)
+ Connecticut Football HC Jim Mora doesn’t hold back when discussing the state of the program as the Huskies sit at 2-9 on the season: “We’re a better football team with a worse record and that’s extremely frustrating, you know, because you see where the world is going. And we play, like I said, go look at the top Group of 5 teams in the country and look at their schedule and compare it to our schedule. So if we’re going to play those teams and people want us to beat Duke and North Carolina State and Syracuse and Maryland next year and Wake Forest next year, then there needs to be a commitment monetarily to helping us get the players that can beat them. Because if you’re not going to help us get the players to beat them, then you are not entitled to bit## when we don’t beat them.” (link)

NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi profiles LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne’s transcendence that has helped her earn a reported $3.5M a year in endorsement deals. Heitner Legal’s Darren Heitner: “She is the equivalent of the five-tool player in baseball. She has the following. She has the engagement. And she has the prowess — she is very good at what she does as an athlete.” Dunne’s fame, though, is not without its difficulties, as Politi notes Dunne’s decision to stop attending classes was done out of an abundance of caution after she received a threatening message on Instagram. She explains: “I had a scare once with a message that I got about a class I was going to, and I was like, you know what, it’s not worth it. It was a threat. It seemed like they knew where I was at and what class, and I just decided better (to be) safe than sorry.” According to an LSU Police report Dunne received death threats on Instagram on Dec. 2, 2021, from an apparent stalker who threatened to “shoot up” the university’s campus. Dunne blocked the account on Instagram and LSU Police launched an investigation, but no arrest was made. More. (link)

Meadowlark Media Co-Founder/former ESPN President John Skipper believes ESPN has an “uphill battle” with ESPN Bet. “They are aligned now with Penn Bet, which I believe is an also-ran in this. Penn has a very profitable business, but I think they’re a 2% [market share] in the sports [betting] business.” That said, Skipper is “also not surprised to see ESPN do this. In the space of the declining pay-TV universe, they have to look for ways to cut expenses, they have to look for other ways to make money. They’re exploring here whether they can make money this way. It seems like good business to me.” Regarding whether a gambling partnership will degrade ESPN’s journalistic credibility, Skipper doesn’t see it as an “unmanageable conflict,” but says: “They have to make it clear, and they will, to their journalists that they have to have a wall between (ESPN Bet) and what they do. I think that will happen, overwhelmingly.” (link)

The majority of the top 20 university endowments (as identified by a February NACUBO report) saw returns under 5%. According to Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody, Harvard, which has the largest single-institution endowment in the nation, saw a 2.9% return in FY23, bringing the total to $50.7B. Still, Harvard CFO Ritu Kalra says the school is not immune to broad economic pressure. “Inflation has been persistent in every arena—wages, supplies, construction costs—and is not yet behind us. Interest rates are higher than they have been in decades, which adds to our costs and puts pressure on the broader financial markets. Going forward, we will need to watch the pace of operating expense growth, which was nearly double this year’s revenue growth. That was purposeful this year, but that level of growth is not sustainable over the long run.” Outside the top 20, several universities posted strong returns, including Wisconsin (10.5%), Nebraska (9.8%), Illinois (9%) and Syracuse (8.6%). NCAA President Charlie Baker joins NBC’s Chuck Todd to discuss the state of college athletics and reiterates his call for a uniform NIL contract, “which would exist if you were buying a house or buying a stock or anything else. The brokers and agents that operate in this space don't have to sign anything that says they work for the customer, which in this case would be the student-athlete. We don't really have what I would describe as any kind of market signals for student-athletes and their families around what they might be worth, and so the traditional consumer protections that exist in almost every other financial walk of life in this country don’t exist for student-athletes.” Baker also espouses a model in which “we think differently about [Power 5] schools than others. Think about it this way. Those 50 or 60 schools, the smallest of them have like a $100M athletic budget. … For me, the way we should be thinking about this is what are we going to do with the schools that represent $100M and then how do we think about the rest?” On the sprawling makeup of the NCAA governance structure, Baker says: “I’ve got to put some points on the board about some other things, but at some point I am going to want to have a conversation with the membership about whether what we have here is actually the way in the 21st century, where things happen [quickly] to be able to make decisions because the NCAA’s definitely been slow to move on a lot of things.” (link)

Maryland AD Damon Evans during last week’s Knight Commission meeting declared his belief that sharing revenue with student-athletes is inevitable, adding: “To think we are not going to be sharing some of those revenues…we are going to be there. It would not surprise me to see some sort of different type of governance structure in place that separates the A5 out from the current structure.” Meanwhile, former Notre Dame/Duke AD Kevin White remarked: “Futuristically, we need to recreate or relaunch the NCAA. We have a good leader in (NCAA president) Charlie Baker who can do that. There is some modeling going on. There are a number of models being created. Some I’ve been sworn to secrecy on. I sat in a room and listened to a model. There is no end to the models, the next iteration and what it might look like.” Some models, White tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, do, in fact, involve major conferences leaving and “taking their resources with them. For someone like me, that’s devastating [to Olympic sports]. It’s beyond devastating, it’s nuclear. … I’m indicting everyone, including myself. We should have been far more progressive and forward thinking over the past 20 years or more.” (link)

Former Colorado football student-athlete Alex Fontenot has filed a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA and “power conferences, alleging that NCAA rules that prohibit athletes from receiving compensation from schools and leagues violate antitrust law,” per On3’s Eric Prisbell. The suit asserts that “the need for ‘amateurism’ was always a fallacy. But the current state of college athletics has put the proverbial nail in the coffin for the NCAA’s amateurism argument.” In specific reference to former Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher’s $76M buyout, the suit adds: “If that type of money can go to a fired coach, then surely the players on the team can be fairly compensated.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points out the suit is not about NIL but is “about allowing revenue to be allocated by the free market rather than the restrictive and unlawful rules of a labor cartel that takes advantage of the athletes that are the primary sources of its massive income. The NCAA/P5 will continually get hit with lawsuits like this unless they A) get rid of limits on athlete compensation or B) allow athletes as employees and engage in collective bargaining.” (link)

Memphis has received the largest gift in its university’s history, a $50M commitment from the family of FedEx Founder/Executive Chairman Frederick Smith to support renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Additionally, a Memphis city councilman has introduced a resolution to appropriate $120M in state grant funding to go towards renovations of the stadium, as well as transfer ownership of the stadium to the University of Memphis Auxiliary Services Foundation. Pending council approval, the funding and ownership transfer will be effective Dec. 30, 2023. (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller wanted to “separate former [Football HC] Mel Tucker from the football team months before the 2023 season began, but the school's administration prevented him from doing so,” ESPN’s Dan Murphy reports. Through MSU VP/University Spokesperson Emily Guerrant, MSU Interim President Teresa Woodruff declined to answer whether she or anyone else in her administration discouraged Haller from acting sooner. Guerrant also declined to provide clarity about when Woodruff learned about Tucker's admission of his conduct with Brenda Tracy but said: "Best practices in investigations call for privacy in order to not influence outcomes. Privacy is also key to creating a culture around reporting incidents -- we must create a safe environment for all individuals to come forward without a fear of institutional retaliation or dissemination of information regarding highly personal matters." Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman joins the Higher Ed Athletics podcast to discuss her leadership style and philosophy as it relates to athletics. Plowman calls herself a “builder” and upon hiring Vols AD Danny White said to him: “Danny, I’m really trying to build this university to be a great university, and I can’t do it without a great athletic department.” Plowman also calls White a “vital member of [her group of advisors] because sometimes the solutions to the problems we are talking about come from things he has been thinking about for athletics and vice versa.” Plowman also offers advice to aspiring campus leaders: “When I was a new dean, somebody gave me the advice to go and sit down with every person in the college in their office. People just pour their hearts out and you learn so much. I would recommend it to anyone. … People want to feel like they matter and that they are connected to where they come from. want people to feel like they know me even though I may never meet them.” (link)

Through the first seven weeks of the college football season, the Pac-12 experienced a 60% YoY increase in viewership, according to the Playfly Fan Score: College Football Edition. The ACC (+27%) and Big 12 (+25%) also saw significant upticks in viewership but still lag the other Power 5 leagues, per On3’s Eric Prisbell, who notes the “SEC, which still had the highest overall average viewership, and the Big Ten both saw slightly diminished viewership totals compared with last season. But that could change with Ohio State-Michigan and also the upcoming SEC championship between Georgia and Alabama.” (link)
