Shorter will become the 15th member of Conference Carolinas in 2024-25, when the league will also sponsor FB for the first time since the mid-1970s. Commissioner Colvin: “The addition of Shorter University allows us the opportunity to add another institution that aligns tremendously with our conference beliefs and values, while also being a first-class institution with a commitment to a strong athletics program. They also accomplish our overall goal of continuing to make our conference stronger, particularly with our recent announcement of our commitment to a three-division model in certain sports.” (link); Shorter will remain a GSC affiliate for the 2023 season, but compete as an independent in 2024. Chowan (2023 & 2024) and Erskine (2024) will compete on the gridiron as affiliate members in the GSC, while North Greenville will extend its affiliate status through 2024, prior to transitioning to Conference Carolinas play. GSC Commissioner Wilson: “No conference enjoys losing membership, however the GSC understands the opportunity presented to both North Greenville and Shorter. Their candor and communication during this process has been appreciated, as it allowed us to prepare and plan accordingly for the future of the conference. We are optimistic that this two-year collaboration sets the table for GSC football and Gulf South to continue its rich tradition of success.” (link)

Lincoln (MO) will exit the MIAA for the GLVC, becoming the conference's 15th full-member effective 2024-25. Lincoln President Moseley: “This is a significant day for the future of Lincoln University. This puts us in a position athletically where we’ve leveled the playing field by realigning ourselves with others of similar size and similar fiscal commitment. This will also give us the opportunity to compete and recruit in areas where Lincoln already has a large alumni base.” LU also announces the addition of Baseball, MSOC and WSOC, growing its roster of sports to 14. More from Moseley: “For me personally, bringing baseball back is special. It's a sport that's had a lot of history here at Lincoln, so I'm excited about its return. Soccer is a growing sport and will give us a chance to have an international presence. Adding these sports, in addition to joining the GLVC, will give us more opportunities to recruit students, not just student-athletes.” (link, link)

WU President Collins: “After an extensive review of nearly 40 incredible candidates from across the country, Nathan’s enthusiastic leadership style coupled with an amazing professional track record set him apart. He is an exemplary leader and follower who shares our commitment to furthering the largest leadership laboratory on campus and contributing to the work of building Walsh 4.0. We are pleased to welcome this leader, this athlete, this scholar to the President’s Cabinet as we build a 'best-in-class' intercollegiate athletic program alongside his amazing colleagues in our Athletic Department. It’s a pivotal time for Walsh University athletics as we grow our portfolio of competitive athletic programming with the addition of women’s STUNT and men’s sprint football – we thank Our Lady of Perpetual Help for her intercession in guiding Nate to Cav Nation – Swords Up!” (link)

MIAA Commissioner Racy details the new DII FB Alliance being spearheaded by his association and the GLIAC: “This alliance, that we hope to get started this spring, will allow presidents and ADs and commissioners from conferences like the GLIAC, the Gulf South Conference, the Lone Star Conference, maybe a couple of others to get around the table and talk about Division II football and how we can make it better, how we can continue to make it stronger and how we can continue to elevate its brand when people think about Division II football and what it means.” Racy points to taking advantage of its national TV opportunities, being more proactive and reactive and more as keys for the alliance. As Lincoln (MO) exits the conference after 2023-24, the Blue Tigers will play the ‘23 FB season against MIAA members in non-conference matchups, allowing LU and MIAA members the flexibility to replace their contests should both entities find alternative opponents. Racy continues that league CEOs are embarking on a “strategic membership growth strategy.” Further: “I am confident that we will replace Lincoln really soon. Beyond that, we’re going to continue to look to grow and I think that growth will include both schools that have football and schools that don’t have football located in the midwest.” More. (link)

The NCAA operated at a nearly $59M deficit for FY22 after generating revenue of $1.14B and expenses of $1.195B, per USA Today’s Berkowitz, who notes the association’s net assets stood at $458M. Berkowitz also points out the NCAA received a $17M loss-of-revenue insurance payout connected to the 2021 MBB tournament. Additionally, the NCAA recorded $90.5M in investment losses, while dividends, interest and realized gains totaled just over $18M, meaning the net investment losses totaled around $72M. Expenses included a $657M distribution to DI conferences and an “$84M charge taken as the NCAA on March 1, 2022, established a new business entity that is essentially an insurance company owned by the association itself,” according to Berkowitz. (link); DII conferences received $15.6M in distributions, up from $11.9M in FY21. The DII reserves increased over $4.5M to $51.6M. (link); Sportico’s Novy-Williams breaks down the financial picture via a bar chart that shows $940M of the NCAA’s FY22 revenue came from TV rights. The chart also illustrates the severity of the loss of revenue – which totaled just $165M from media rights – during the COVID year of FY20 when compared to recent years. (link)

NCAA VP of Enforcement Duncan sits down with Connect/MB Sports' Banker from the NCAA Convention to discuss pressing enforcement matters across the NCAA including NIL, cooperation from members, sports gambling and more. Duncan offers some best practices as they relate to athletic departments dealing with collectives, telling Banker: "We would always rather present a violation than process one, and so to the extent that we can, we're happy to work with schools, collectives, with some of the third parties involved in this environment, to share our understanding of what we're seeing, the bylaws as we understand them, in an effort to help schools [and] collectives not commit violations. But also to collect information because we know there are violations occurring, we know there are behaviors out there that are inconsistent with NCAA rules, and those relationships not only help us to prevent violations before they occur, but detect ones on other campuses after they occur. So, the other thing we can share with institutions and with collectives is types of behaviors that we would see that could raise an eyebrow in enforcement: "When a collective is announced, here's what we might be looking at. When we hear about collective behaviors, these are things that might cause a question or cause some correspondence with the enforcement staff, and we're always happy to share those things with schools, yet without giving interpretive guidance, which we won't do." NCAA President Emmert has “very mixed emotions” about stepping down next month and tells ESPN: “I look at all these challenges and complexities and I'm going to miss that. I like those, and I'd love to be someone who helps untangle them. On the other hand, I think it's the right time to make a change." Emmert also contends that while passing some form of NCAA rules years ago to regulate NIL would’ve put college sports in a better position than it is today, needing help from Congress was inevitable. As such, he believes incoming President Baker’s political savvy will be “critically important,” adding: “I'm sure that's part of what the board loved about him. He'll be able to move in that world very well." (link)

The NCAA has released the findings of its Coach Well-Being Study, which found that 80% of the 6K HC, AC and AHC respondents across all three divisions reported spending more time talking about mental health with their players than they did before the pandemic. About one-third of coaches reported they "constantly" or "most every day" experienced mental exhaustion, feelings of being overwhelmed by all that they had to do, and sleep difficulties. Additionally, coaches who identified as Black, Indigenous or people of color; female; or members of the LGBTQ+ community reported higher rates of mental health concerns, similar to data found in the student-athlete surveys. Among DII respondents, 18% indicated they felt high levels of stress related to the perceived need to recruit four-year transfers into their programs. Full report. (link)

Academy of Art will discontinue its Baseball program at the end of this season, reducing its sport sponsorship to 13. AD Jones: “It is a difficult decision to discontinue a sport. [...] We are proud of our past and present baseball student-athletes, we are pleased that they are representatives of the Academy of Art University, and we look forward to their future successes. We are also very appreciative of our baseball coaches for their professionalism, service, and dedication to our student-athletes and the baseball program at the Academy of Art University.
