Kansas State AD Gene Taylor Q&As with the Topeka Capital-Journal, calls the overall health of the Wildcats department “healthy.” Indicates the new indoor track will be complete in a couple of weeks & then KSU is “good for a while” on major facility projects. As for NIL, Taylor says you “can’t lock your knees, because it’s constantly moving and adjusting,” also adds: “So far it has not hurt us too bad. There's just a conversation that we continue to have with our donors about what is important and what the priorities are. We need NIL, and we also need operating dollars, and so we ask them to consider both and not to take one to pay for another.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork opens up about the Aggies’ search to replace former Football HC Jimbo Fisher: “This is not an 8-4 job. It’s not. Because of the decision we made (to let Fisher go) but also because of the resources and expectations. Does somebody have the wherewithal to deal with that, the weight of (the job) and the magnitude, and not get fazed and rattled, not panic, and if something doesn’t go right, they fix what they need to fix? Do you have the chops to deal with this job? [It’s] not for everybody.” Bjork also acknowledges that “we have to get this contract right. We can’t do what we did before. … We’ve level-set with everybody we’ve talked to and said, ‘Here are the parameters, and here is the structure.’” That structure, Bjork explains, will likely be heavy on incentives. “You can have a base package that has to be competitive, but then it’s like, we’re not giving bonuses to go to the Liberty Bowl. [You make] the CFP, the first round, the quarterfinals, the semifinals, you host, you win the national championship. You win the national championship, you’ll get paid like a national championship coach. That’s how we’re putting this package together.” (link)

As Syracuse searches for a new football HC, Orange AD John Wildhack insists this “is not a total reboot. … We can be very competitive in the ACC. We're not that far away. I still think there are ways that we are an ascending brand. From a record perspective, I get it. You know, 5-6. Not acceptable, right? That's why I made the decision that I made. But I go back in terms of the investment, the commitment that we made, the investments that we've already made in the infrastructure of the program. So I think it is. Is there a lot of work to do? Absolutely, and I acknowledge that. But we will do the work.” On what he’s looking for in HC candidates: “You need someone who's a really good leader, I think someone who's a really clear communicator. One who can develop. Most Power 5 schools, you know, we’re developmental schools, right? Who has an eye for talent? Who can develop that talent? Someone who can communicate and build a staff. Not only the assistants, but support staff as well. Someone who's going to represent the values of our university in our community as well.” (link)

Isaacson, Miller Chair John Isaacson tells The State News: “His schedule just didn't work, [the proposal] was kind of short notice. … [He] might do it, but it would be later." Isaacson also notes Guskiewicz is committed to "engaging not just the faculty but every constituency" eventually, but likely not this week during ongoing deliberations over his candidacy. (link)

Oregon and Boise State continue to discuss the possibility of rescheduling a home-and-home football series between the two schools in 2024 and 2025 in order to clear the way for UO and Oregon State to continue the Civil War rivalry. JohnCanzano.com reports the Broncos are willing to work with UO to reschedule those two games but want a fee to help secure alternate opponents. “The contract between Oregon and Boise State calls for the visiting team to receive $300K in 2024 and 2025. … The interest on Oregon State’s side is, in part, fueled by revenue. Not just tickets sold, but TV money. The home team (or conference) owns the television rights to games. The Beavers could potentially sell the Civil War home game at Reser Stadium à la carte to a television network and subsidize their mission to play a ‘Pac-2’ schedule.” As of now, September 14 is the only date the schools seem willing to consider for next season. There's been an ongoing trend in college athletics that’s not often discussed: continuing the student-athlete relationship after their time on campus through dedicated alumni spaces and locker rooms. This investment is more than a nod to nostalgia; it's a strategic embrace of former players to enrich the culture of identified sports programs.
These dedicated spaces serve as a tangible bridge between a program's history and its present ambitions. This facility inclusion encourages and motivates former players to return to their alma mater more often and use the spaces as a ‘home base’ during the off-season for personal training and practice. We have collaborated with a few programs as of late, specifically in the ACC (Wake Forest Baseball and UNC Football).
Media and social buzz generated when professional athletes return to their alma mater can drive valuable organic impressions and fan engagement. Prospective recruits see these interactions, recognizing the potential opportunity to be part of a program with a strong culture. This visibility not only elevates the program's profile but also underlines a commitment to nurturing athletes beyond their college years, making it an attractive proposition for top recruits.
By designing athletic facilities and designated alumni locker rooms, Dimensional Innovations is able to create a physical testament to a program's commitment to its past athletes. They serve as a reminder to current athletes of what they can achieve and the potential of an enduring legacy that exists long after graduation.

Tulane has zeroed in on Northern Iowa AD David Harris for its open AD post, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who reports a deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days. Thamel also notes Harris’ immediate job will be retaining Football HC Willie Fritz, who publicly endorsed Green Wave Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects Kortne Gosha for the position. As you likely recall, the Green Wave’s previous AD, new Washington boss Troy Dannen, also arrived in NOLA from UNI. (link)

TCU has extended AD Jeremiah Donati’s contract for five years, and Donati tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Mac Engel: “This is where I want to be. They gave me this opportunity after (Chris Del Conte left for Texas in December of 2017), and I am very grateful for that. The chancellor and I have a great relationship, and I am very appreciative for what he’s done, and the confidence he’s shown in me.” (link)

Big 12 presidents next week are expected to resume talks about potentially adding Gonzaga, and The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte cites a source as saying it’s possible a vote will be taken; however, “it is unclear if commissioner Brett Yormark has enough support to add Gonzaga to what already is the strongest men's basketball conference in the country. … Any vote before June 30, 2024, would require approval from nine of the 12 schools (Texas and Oklahoma, as outgoing members, do not have a vote). Once the Pac-12 schools — Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah — join the league on July 1, then 12 of 16 votes would be needed for approval.” (link)

New on Connect: NCAA SVP for Policy and Governance Kevin Lennon sat down with Connect/MB Sports' Matt Banker at the 2023 Women Leaders in Sports Convention to discuss his new role, changes around NCAA governance, the NCAA’s plans for post-eligibility insurance, the latest on NIL and more. Lennon notes there will be an “elevation” of student-athletes' voices in discussions concerning their respective sports. “We’ve created our own NCAA men's basketball group. There's always been a women's basketball group and certainly one in football, but to your point that's bringing those student-athletes who are in that sport an opportunity to contribute to those issues that are most salient and important for their sport. So, we have seen that trend working it through, and I just think you're going to see more of it moving forward.” On the decision to begin providing post-eligibility insurance, Lennon remarks it’s “just another one of those examples – with Charlie Baker’s leadership – where are places where we can add value, where we can help young people, and then we can help our institutions by scaling this up in the way that one can do with this type of program that we think is going to have a lot of benefits for young people.” Full Q&A. College football ratings are up 15% YoY and ‘23 is tracking to be the most watched season of all-time, eclipsing the previous record set in 2015, and all this is happening amid the “clearly very real” backdrop of cord-cutting, JohnWallStreet observes. Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill explains: “What we’ve seen is [the phenomenon] is happening all around sports, not to sports. The people who are the heaviest sports viewers, they’re staying in the bundle. … What we’re seeing [in the viewership data] is the power of having more games on the biggest and best available platforms.” One reason sports viewership has been immune to cord-cutting is that the “bulk of those exiting the Pay TV universe weren’t watching games to begin with,” per JWS. “So, while the number of households with traditional cable or a vMVPD subscription has fallen dramatically in recent years, the realistic TAM for sports programmers hasn’t.” Further, marquee games are increasingly migrating from cable back to broadcast networks. “In fact, through Week 11, there had been 24 more games on major broadcast networks.” Meanwhile, neither realignment nor NIL are negatively impacting interest. JWS points out that 90% of fans 18-34 see conference realignment as a positive (or neutral) move for collegiate athletics, and 75% of fans polled from the same demographic believe NIL has had a positive impact. Mulvihill goes a step further: “When [realignment] actually comes into play, and we have [some super premium] games like USC-Michigan, Oregon-Ohio State, it’s going to be a big positive.” (link)

ECU Executive Assoc. AD for Revenue Generation/Pirate Club Executive Director Ryan Robinson says the Pirates hope to have upwards of $19.5M committed to the construction of a new indoor facility and are focused on finalizing how much the project will cost. Current projections based on other similar facilities are in the $23-25M range. Robinson also notes the Pirates have raised around $4M for a new baseball expansion and says that for the overall capital campaign, he expects ECU will have raised close to $30M over 18 months by the end of the year. While there’s no timetable on either project, Robinson says the school would like to get a shovel in the ground sometime in 2024. “This indoor facility is going to impact all of our sports.” (link)

Navy has unveiled its “Silent Service” uniforms for this year’s showdown with Army West Point. “Selected to honor the USS MASSACHUSETTS (SSN 798) — the ninth ship of that name in service of the United States, dating back to the earliest days of the Continental Navy. The USS Massachusetts will be the 25th Virginia-class nuclear submarine to enter U.S. Navy service and will reside in Groton, Conn., after commissioning. … Each helmet is hand-painted with the right side depicting a Virginia Class Submarine underwater and the left side depicting Navy’s customary Navy anchor with the submariner pin integrated into it with color-changing pragmatic paint. The front flex panel depicts a color-changing radar, which is used on submarines to find their target. The front decal of the helmet says ‘Navy,’ while the back decal says ‘Silent Service.’” It never gets old saying this: Awesome. Every single year. (link, link)
