Boise State provides a behind the scenes look of its Football HC search before a selection has been made. Can’t think of many other search processes that have featured the travel & meetings associated with such a high-profile search before the announcement of a new leader. In the video, Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey outlines why the facilities in Boise stack up well against the rest of the Mountain West, says the last 48 hours have been “very productive.” Senior Assoc. AD for Athletics Personnel Services & Chief of Staff Heather Berry, Vice President for University Advancement and Assoc. AD/Strategic Communications & Business Development Mike Walsh are assisting Dickey. (link); Interestingly, Boise has also setup a dedicated webpage to keep fans updated about the search with more video content. Also looks like Collegiate Sports Associates is the search firm of record judging from the videos. (link)

During the 2022 football season, five of the eight lowest-spectated schools in FBS were members of the MAC. The $100M media rights extension the league signed with ESPN in 2014 places November home games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights through 2026-27. On that front, Commissioner Steinbrecher: “It is a balance of having a unique time slot that has become almost iconic. It has helped build a national brand for the conference and its membership. You do have to work hard in terms of moving tickets, but as we have seen, when there are compelling matchups, compelling games, I think we have people who have been successful.” Akron AD Charles Guthrie: “Our next plan needs to focus on making our stadiums look TV-ready, looking at the camera side. There are a lot of things we can do that won’t cost a lot of money that will fix the perception of our games not having attendance.” More on individual school’s approaches to the attendance woes. More details on the situation with Cal men’s basketball student-athlete Fardaws Aimaq confronting a fan in the stands of the SoCal Challenge for allegedly calling the senior forward a “terrorist.” According to tournament organizers, they were “made aware of the issue by Cal representatives on Wednesday morning. Security has been briefed to strictly enforce the policy and an internal investigation is ongoing related to Monday’s events.” (link)

Former Lafayette men’s basketball Head Coach Mike Jordan seeks $5M in a wrongful termination lawsuit he filed last week against the school. A letter from Lafayette said Jordan was fired due to “gross misconduct and/or insubordination” but the findings of the investigation that led to those conclusions were not provided to Jordan, according to the federal lawsuit filed Nov. 14. Jordan was hired in March of 2022 and put on leave in February of 2023 before the school parted ways in May. (link)

Another potential first: Mississippi State interim football Head Coach Greg Knox led his team onto the field for the Egg Bowl last night riding a four-wheeler. Why? Knox: “This is about handling adversity, opposition. When you face things that’s tough in life, this is a life lesson. This is what we learned in the 11 days I’ve been here. This is a life lesson.” (link)

Fox’s Jay Glazer reports “All the teams I've talked to say regardless of what we hear in that investigation, that's not going to affect the way we look at Jim Harbaugh if he wants to come back and coach in the NFL.” FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett “Fox's report Thursday runs counter to a report from NFL Network last month that said the NFL could collectively pass on Harbaugh, citing precedent where the NFL honored an NCAA suspension of Jim Tressel following the Tattoogate scandal of 2011.” The Michigan football HC faces two concurrent NCAA investigations, resulting in two separate suspensions that have or will sideline him for much of the Wolverine’s regular season. Omaha-based Kiewit Building Group has been tapped from a group of six candidates to serve as construction manager for the $450M overhaul of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will vote next week on a $1.8M contract for Kiewit to manage the estimated $34M Phase 1 of the project. The company is currently constructing the $110 million Kiewit Hall engineering building on the UNL campus, a project for which it provided the naming gift. (link)

When UCF and Houston meet on the gridiron for the first time as Big 12 foes this weekend, it could be the start of the biggest battle for space supremacy since Skywalker v. Vader, Kirk v. Klingons or, perhaps, Helmet v. Lone Star, according to ESPN’s Dave Wilson and Ryan McGee. Both cities and institutions take pride in their associations with exploration of the cosmos. UCF, which sits roughly 35 miles from Cape Canaveral, supplies roughly 30% of the Kennedy Space Center’s employees, and the Knights highlight their connection to the industry each year by donning Canaveral Blue unis in the Space Game. Houston HC Dana Holgorsen scoffs at the notion. “I thought we were Space City. … They don’t say, ‘Orlando, we’ve got a problem.’” NASA Head of Sports Engagement Wayne Saxer notes the agency has Space Act agreements with both schools, and to celebrate both institutions’ roles supporting NASA, the agency flew a newly minted medallion featuring the logos of each school on opposing sides to the International Space Station a couple of months ago. Launched from Florida and guided by Houston, the medallion will come back to Earth, where it will be framed and presented to the winning team. Two schools, one coin. Like the Force. Or the Schwartz. T minus three days until the newest and most well-traveled trophy in college sports is awarded. More. (link)

When is it too early to specialize in a sport? Are there more sports that are susceptible to early specialization? Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker asks these questions and more to USOPC Sports Medicine Research Laboratory Director Eric Post and University of New England Athletic Training Program Medical Director Dr. Michele LaBotz, who break down NATA’s six recommendations for parents, coaches, and youth athletes to most effectively navigate sport specialization and to avoid burnout and overuse injuries. They also discuss the role college coaches can play in helping their athletes avoid burnout with LaBotz saying: “Most schools these days have stress management meetings for their athletes and actually for the general student body as well, and I would strongly encourage coaches to have their athletes fully buy into that because that's going to be protective not only during the transition period, but burnout gets more prevalent as students go through the college experience. So, anything that coaches can do to help build athletes who are more resilient and more capable of adapting not only to the physical athletic and sport-related stress, but also to the cumulative social, academic and other stress that goes on with being a college student” will pay dividends throughout student-athletes' careers. Lots more on Connect. (link)

MAAC Deputy Commissioner Jessica Grasso and North Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Leadership and Culture Development/SWA Jessie Gardner sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention to reflect on the evolution of their respective leadership philosophies and how they seek to impact future generations of leaders. Gardner shares her “People, Passion, Purpose” leadership statement and the impact of mentors on her growth in the industry, and Grasso explains her “Leading Beyond The W” philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into leading a department or conference office. Gardner: “Understanding myself is the first step in leadership and then being able to then use my unique value, my skill set and then how do I use that to basically create that positive impact? … Operating from the standpoint of my faith is a really big part for me, so continuing to give myself that grace in the midst of it has helped me evolve it and really understanding that this you know I'm in this world for something greater than myself.” Grasso on the satisfaction of mentoring up-and-coming leaders: “You see yourself in them when you first started…and when they advance it makes you happy, it's a reflection of how you managed them or affected them and impacted them.” (link)

Central Michigan officials have provided their official list of issued "team area" sideline passes for the Chippewas’ game against Michigan State earlier this season, and FootballScoop’s John Brice reports: “Per the document submitted to and reviewed by FootballScoop, Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain and CMU athletics director Amy Folan ‘signed’ the document electronically in connection with their game at Michigan State. Connor Stalions, alleged mastermind of an illegal scheme that has shelved Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh for his second three-game suspension of this season, is not listed. The question remains, how did Stalions obtain a credential? Other than providing the credential form to FootballScoop, CMU has provided no update on its internal investigation into the apparent presence of Stalions.” (link)

USC Lincoln Riley on what his response would be if an NFL team called and said it wanted him to coach Trojans QB Caleb Williams next year: “Hell no. No. I’m coaching at SC. Period. I didn’t come here for some short-term thing and as long as SC continues to give us the support and the things we need to continue to build this, this was not a two-year rebuild. No. I’m going to be the coach at SC. Period. End of discussion. I’m so committed to this place because I know what it can be. And if that commitment continues to get matched around us, we’re going to do what we’ve got to do in here and make the adjustments, make the tough decisions, push on the good, own the bad, fix the bad. We’re in it through all the twists and turns and I wanted to make sure people knew that and the more people we have with that same attitude, the faster this thing’s going to get back to normal.” Riley also talks with The Athletic’s Antonio Morales about his relationship with Trojans AD Jen Cohen: “She’s got a great way about her. She’s got great experience. She’s got great juice and energy. And I think for the SC people that have had a chance to be around her, she is high level and she is high level in every sense of the word. She’s already made us better. … I was thrilled when President Folt made that hire and (I’m) kind of excited here through this offseason to continue to build it with her. That was a home run for USC.” (link)

California Men’s Basketball HC Mark Madsen has released a statement after student-athlete Fardaws Aimaq confronted a fan on Monday at the SoCal Challenge. “Throughout and after Monday’s game, Fardaws Aimaq was allegedly subjected to abhorrent and offensive comments from a fan — including being called a terrorist. I have asked the SoCal Challenge tournament director that a formal investigation be conducted and that this fan be barred from the premises. Fardaws and I had an important conversation today about how he needs to maintain his composure regardless of what takes place in a game or what is said to him directly. The consequences related to this situation will be managed internally.” (link)

Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz says it’s a “little tougher” to achieve sustained success in the current media climate and takes aim at the Worldwide Leader in particular: “With all the ESPN coverage and all that — in fact I was making a comment to a couple guys on the staff this morning, I was looking through there and saw three faces on that little thing on the left of your ESPN site where they’ve got the videos. Three guys that are basically coach killers or player killers that are just like — all they’re trying to do is just stir up controversy. So that’s kind of what’s out there now for people to take in. You wonder why there’s so much negativity.” (link)

Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell addresses the unique phenomenon of seventh-year seniors, saying: “This world today, I think we’ve still got a couple more years left of not knowing how old or what guys have left in the tank based on how many years of experience. I just saw Minnesota’s got a seventh year guy and I just saw a Utah quarterback (Cam Rising) is staying, he’s coming back for a seventh year. Is this still college football? I don’t know. I’m not sure it was meant to be six years, seven years. There’s a lot of those things still hanging.” (link)

Service academy student-athletes are unable to capitalize on NIL deals by virtue of their being classified as employees of their respective military branches, which means they are subject to the federal law prohibiting military members from using public office for private gain. However, the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty points out there is no law prohibiting the branches themselves from partnering with other student-athletes the way the U.S. Army did with Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers, who recapped a trip to Fort Knox as part of deal with GoArmy. Gonzaga professor Jeremiah Favara believes it’s a natural fit. “If someone is swayable, a U.S. Army TikTok account that mass produces an ad is way different than a student-athlete influencer, maybe at your institution, maybe at an institution you’re a fan of, saying: ‘Hey, I recently went to this military thing. I met with the ROTC, and it was really cool.’ It’s a peer-to-peer appeal as opposed to the military being this big institution trying to talk to youth.” (link)

Jackson State so far has yet to comment after Sean “Diddy” Combs, who donated $1M to the university, settled a lawsuit in which he was accused of repeated instances of sexual and physical abuse over the course of a decade-long relationship with R&B singer Cassie Ventura. Asked by Sportico’s Daniel Libit whether the lawsuit changed the university’s position on the donation, JSU responded: “No comment.” Combs has “vehemently” denied the allegations against him. (link)
