Virginia State Senator Scott Surovell (D-36) is among those who have criticized James Madison’s decision to back off its threat of legal action against the NCAA in pursuit of postseason eligibility, writing on X: “We are going to need some answers about this – as a practicing attorney who cares about his broader reputation, I never threaten litigation for a client unless I'm going to follow thru – no one ever takes you seriously in negotiations if you're one of those guys.” Surovell’s remarks are in response to Dukes AD Jeff Bourne’s explanation that the decision to press pause on litigation was due to a timing issue – specifically, a decision by the court would’ve been needed by today in order for the Sun Belt to adequately prepare its championship game – and the additional resources that would be required. Dukes Football HC Curt Cignetti also weighs in: “We knew the transition rules when we entered FBS. We attempted to appeal the rule, twice! My confidence in our leadership’s decision-making has never wavered. … I personally find the current ‘noise’ out there ridiculous and counter-productive to our daily efforts to improve all of Athletics.” (link, link)

Ohio State and Michigan are the “ticket sales juggernauts of FBS football,” per Sportico’s Lev Akabas, who notes the Buckeyes sold $47.6M in football tickets during the 2021-22 season, which led all public schools in the country, while Michigan was just behind at $47.5M. The two programs have been ranked first and second in the nation in football ticketing each of the past four non-COVID seasons, according to Sportico’s Intercollegiate Finances Database.” The get-in price for tomorrow’s matchup is $676, which is 78% higher than last year's showdown, and it is the most expensive regular-season college football game that TicketIQ has ever tracked, Akabas adds. He also points out that OSU spends more overall on football ($69.1M in 2021-22), which was first in the Big Ten and third among FBS public schools. Michigan’s budget was much lower at $52.4M, trailing OSU and Penn State. The Buckeyes in 2021-22 also shelled out $5.79M on football team meals, far outstripping the rest of the country. Michigan was next, spending $3.49M. (link)

Nebraska’s $450M football facilities project is not without some detractors within state government. State Senator Steve Erdman: “It looks bad to me when you have a situation where you’re considering or have raised tuition, and you’re trying to make cuts in your spending at the university level.” University regent Barbara Weitz: “Why now? I know how important Husker athletics are, but I’m deeply concerned about the amount of money that we’re expecting to raise from a lot of the same people.” Cornhuskers AD Trev Alberts provides deeper context: “This started out for me as … a project that was about … let’s make sure we have the creature comforts that our fans desire. It turned into, ‘We better get busy very, very quickly creating a business strategy that is about replacing the lost revenue that’s eventually going to go straight to student-athletes.” (link)

Michigan informed the NCAA on Wednesday that the results over the final three games of the regular season would be credited to Football HC Jim Harbaugh's record. It was previously reported that the results of the first three games of the season, for which Harbaugh was also suspended, were credited to the AC who served as HC on the sidelines, which appears to still be the case, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr., Bruce Feldman and Max Olson conduct a postmortem on former Texas A&M Football HC Jimbo Fisher’s tenure and paint a picture of a coach who refused to change. “He wanted to do things his way and dug in his heels. Armed with a massive contract and a buyout more than triple the previous largest in college football history, he felt unfireable.” One former Aggies staffer adds: “Jimbo lost his fastball. He was hungry and motivated at FSU. Then he started reading his press clippings.” Meanwhile, the Aggies endured constant turnover in the recruiting and personnel department, and for the past five months, A&M hasn’t had a director of player personnel, a position filled at every other SEC program and every Power 5 program in Texas. Aggies AD Ross Bjork: “That position is so, so important in today’s environment. … It seems like things were just really hard. And look, winning is hard, I get it. But processes and procedures should not be hard.” More. (link)

“Insanity,” is what one Big Ten director of player personnel predicts the football transfer portal window to be when it opens on December 4. 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz: “It’s become more and more clear that not only is this going to be another eventful portal cycle, but specifically, my expectation is at this point we’re going to see a number of veteran, accomplished quarterbacks that ultimately make the move and go into the portal, including some guys that entered this season with draftable grades from the NFL.” More from a 247’s survey of several FBS staffers behind the paywall. Alabama Deputy AD Karin Lee and Clemson Executive Senior Assoc. AD Natalie Honnen join AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention to discuss intentionality and the importance of infusing purpose and presence into the fast-paced world of college athletics. Honnen points to the power of daily “joyful moments” to keep her aligned with her big picture purpose, noting that she spends more time reflecting versus goal setting, while Lee organically creates daily “action plans” to stay focused on making Crimson Tide athletics better. Both Honnen and Lee credit their ADs for setting the tone of their respective departments, with Lee sharing how Alabama AD Greg Byrne inspires staff to take ownership and accountability of the department’s success and Honnen crediting Clemson AD Graham Neff for creating an inclusive, family-friendly culture for the Tigers. On building a culture of trust, Lee explains it’s important to be visible and present. “You don’t know [the] impact that it makes [on coaches and student-athletes…making sure that they see you and you’re visible. The thing with the coaches I have, [I say], ‘Coach, you want to meet with me? Weekly: it's up to you. Every two weeks? Every month? Let’s just get together and talk or chat.” Lee also says she’s developed a relationship with Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne where “I go in, I'm like, ‘You know what, we may disagree when the door is closed. As soon as that door opens you can trust me, and I know trust, I can say it, but I'm going to prove it to you over time that I'm going to support you in any way possible.” (link)

Michigan professor of complex systems Scott Page and economist Lu Hong crunch the numbers and find that diverse groups outperform even groups of actual subject matter experts when it comes to complex problem-solving. Workweek Chief People Officer Hebba Youssef explains: “Diverse groups encounter fewer blocks compared to homogenous thinkers. Or put another way: they get stuck in different spots, and then can harness the power of the group. Diversity, in Page's words, offers supercharged ‘bonuses.’ An example: Page illustrates how the entry of women into economics in the 1970s transformed his field. Previously, women's labor was often excluded from GDP calculations, resulting in incomplete analyses. Men thinking about the economy weren't thinking about women. By including women and their perspectives, the estimates got more accurate. Shocker. In short, have a complex problem to solve? Make sure your org is diverse.” (link)
