Tucson.com headliner Greg Hansen does not believe any Arizona sport programs will be cut as a result of the university’s financial situation: “Cutting baseball (or swimming or track) isn’t going to make a dent in (President Robert) Robbins’ $240 million campus-wide situation. [...] Today, the school compiles about $21 million per year in ticket sales with another $20 million in contributions from those ticket holders. [...] The uncertain economic future of the University of Arizona has damaged the school’s brand and reputation. But eliminating sports isn’t going to fix the big financial issues. Not even close.” (link)

Coaches Corner: Football…
+ There was an hour or two late last night when a multitude of reports had Texas A&M hiring Kentucky HC Mark Stoops. TexAgs.com’s Billy Lucci says Stoops began telling those around him he was headed to College Station before the A&M board did a U-turn. Stoops later released a statement: “I know there’s been much speculation about me and my job situation the last couple of days. It’s true I was contacted about a potential opportunity this weekend, but after celebrating a big win against our rivals with players I love like family, I knew in my heart I couldn’t leave the University of Kentucky right now. I have a great job at a place I love, and I get to work with the best administration and greatest fan base in college football right where I’m at. I’m excited to say I’m a Wildcat!” (link, link)
+ Michigan State has announced the hire of Oregon State HC Jonathan Smith. Beavers AD Scott Barnes: “His decision follows weeks of conversations during which he expressed his support for OSU’s short- and long-term plans and appreciation for the efforts OSU made to provide him with a new contract and guaranteed compensation.” (link)
+ Multiple reports have Mississippi State focused on hiring Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby. (link)
+ New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez announces a change in leadership for the Lobos. (link)
+ Marshall AD Christian Spears says Football HC Charles Huff will be back to lead the Thundering Herd even though this season “has not met expectations.” Huff just completed his third season in Huntington with a 6-6 (3-5) mark & overall is 22-16 (13-11). (link)
+ Southern Miss HC Will Hall will also be back for the 2024 campaign. Hall is 13-24 (8-16) in his three seasons leading the Golden Eagles, which includes a 3-9 (2-6) mark this year. (link)
+ North Carolina HC Mack Brown after last night’s loss to NC State: “I think we addressed that last week. Yeah, I'm planning on being back. I hadn't even thought about it until y'all brought it up. It gets brought up every year. When you're 72, that's a regular you can just mark it down. It's the Thursday before the last game before recruiting starts, because everybody that's competing against you.” (link)

Additionally, Maryland HC Mike Locksley picks up a $50K bonus and gets an automatic one-year extension worth at least $7M with $4.55M guaranteed in a deal that now goes through December 31, 2028. Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh, who was suspended for yesterday’s tilt against Ohio State, earned a $500K bonus for the Wolverines winning the Big Ten East crown. (link)

The Iowa Board of Regents last week approved several recommendations to significantly scale back the DEI efforts at Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. The recommendations, which were the result of a study conducted at the behest of Governor Kim Reynolds, mandate the universities to, among other things, “take reasonable steps” to ensure that no campus constituent is required to submit any sort of DEI statement or be “compelled to disclose their pronouns;” prohibit the consideration of race and other protected characteristics in admissions “consistent with the law;” update general education category names “to accurately reflect the array of options students may select from to satisfy these requirements and ensure a breadth of offerings;” explore an initiative to promote education on free speech and civic engagement; and look into new recruitment strategies for “advancing diversity of intellectual and philosophical perspectives in faculty and staff.” (link)

The NBA, MLB and NHL have partnered with DraftKings, Fanatics, PENN Entertainment and the National Council on Problem Gambling to release a 30-second ad promoting responsible sports gambling. NBA SVP/Head of Gaming and New Business Ventures Scott Kaufman-Ross said it was important to educate bettors, especially young bettors, on the “inherent risk of sports gambling" and to "correct the misperception that it’s a good way to make money." Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft has approved final ballot language for a referendum on sports betting in the state. Organizers, which include a coalition of the professional teams in the state, will now choose one of eight versions to put before voters and before collecting the necessary 170K signatures across the state in order to place a question on the ballot. St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III says the coalition will meet with executives in the mobile gambling app industry to discuss which version to go forward with and then map out a strategy for collecting the signatures. DeWitt also notes he’d prefer state lawmakers to come to an agreement this spring in order to avoid what will be an expensive media campaign for the voter initiative. (link)

Clarification: Oregon officials clarified that it’s standard for the Ducks to show games from around the nation featuring ranked teams during football pregame & therefore the choice to broadcast Michigan State-Penn State was not a dig at Oregon State. Parts of Texas-Texas Tech was also broadcast via the video board in Autzen Stadium on Friday night.

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts on his recently inked eight-year contract extension via an interview with KETV's Andy Kendeigh: “It was important that it wasn't something that I was pushing is not something that I asked for it, but I am grateful. You know, I love this place. I love the state of Nebraska. I don't want to be anywhere else. And I have a belief based on what I know of what's happening in college athletics and the shift and happening. I believe that this is the best athletic director job in the country. And I think that as more and more the realities of our shifting business model sort of manifest themselves, it'll become more obvious. I guess in the end, Andy, I believe that when all the dust settles, the healthiest balance sheet gives us the most reasonable opportunity to do three things, okay, which I know are very important to our fan base.” (link)

U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) joined NBC News’ Chuck Todd to discuss their bipartisan bill (along with Senator Jerry Moran [R-KS]) and the creation of a College Athletics Corporation. Booker tells Todd: “I think college football and college sports in general is in crisis right now. We all see it, and this is nothing new that the almighty dollar has been controlling the game. We've seen time and time again over the years how that's been most often the most important principle, not the well-being of athletes. What we want to do is put athletes at the center of this finally, not only just empowering them with NIL rules but protecting them from a lot of the – frankly, exploitation – that we’ve seen over the years.” Booker also believes Congress should stay out of realignment as of right now but acknowledges it’s “very frustrating,” but “in the same way as a football player we know the story of Teddy Roosevelt saving college football, we have a role to play to protect folks.” Ultimately, Booker notes whatever action is taken will have to get 60 votes in the Senate, so “we’re not going to solve every problem.” Blumenthal adds: “I think there are limits to what Congress can and should do in this area, but I think really what’s most important is keeping our eye on the ball. What’s best for the athletes? And it isn’t just more dollars in their pockets. It’s also educational outcomes, health outcomes.” Full Q&A. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Michael Rosenberg contextualizes the “game within The Game” between Ohio State and Michigan and observes: “In many ways, major-college football is now a professional sport with an amateur rule book. This has created an unfortunate dynamic: Coaches can operate within the rules but outside the spirit of competition. They can operate outside the rules but within the spirit of competition. And they can weaponize the rules to use against one another. … The perception that college sports are populated by Good Guys and Bad Guys is as old as the NCAA. It adds to the theater of the sport, but is soulless and distasteful—implying, as it does, that half the people involved are amoral brutes with so little self-regard that they believe their only value to the species is as an entertainment product.” He goes on to call the rule that former Wolverines staffer Connor Stalions broke outdated and puts it in perspective: To sum up: A school can pay one coach $12M, but it can’t pay 12 coaches a total of $1M. If Stalions hires somebody to videotape Ohio State’s signals against another opponent, then that’s apparently illegal, it’s a major strategic advantage (according to the Big Ten) and Harbaugh can be punished because he should have known. But if Harbaugh then gives all of those signals to Ohio State’s next opponent, that’s within the rules…or is it? Is the recipient also supposed to have known how the intel was acquired? Should Purdue’s Brohm have grilled Ohio State and Rutgers to make sure they obtained Michigan’s signals legally last year?” (link)

Lawrence-based former Senate candidate and special advisor to the Kansas athletic department Paul Buskirk (Dem.) is running for the U.S. House seat held by Tracey Mann (Rep.) covering the 1st district, which stretches from Lawrence to the Colorado border. Buskirk: “President Lincoln referenced government as ‘of the people, by the people and for the people.’ Many officials, appointed or elected, hold tightly to ideology, political party and their own welfare with little regard for governing ‘for the people.’ I want to change that.” (link)

Before last night’s Oregon-Oregon State kick, reports circulated that Michigan State had centered its Football HC search on Beavers HC Jonathan Smith with a deal likely to be done by the end of the weekend. Smith responded after the game: “No decision has been made.” (link); At halftime, OSU AD Scott Barnes said he’s continuing to work on a long-term contract to keep Smith in Corvallis. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz with this week’s football coaching bonuses: Oregon’s Dan Lanning leads the way with $300K ($100K for a spot in the Pac-12 title game and $200K for the 11th regular season win). Others include Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin ($150K), Utah State’s Blake Anderson ($75K), Missouri’s Eli Drinkwitz ($50K). Also, Eastern Michigan HC Chris Creighton gets a one-year automatic extension as EMU picked up its sixth win of the season earlier in the week. (link)

International student-athletes could be immediately considered in violation of their F-1 student visa in the event student-athletes are classified as employees, immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells On3’s Eric Prisbell. In the event that happens, Maiorova believes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would “have no choice but to take their heads out of the sand and actually consider how we change this.” From the university perspective, Maiorova remarks: “To the extent that I've brought it up to various stakeholders, that's just been kind of a novel concept for them – they just go, 'Oh, well, we haven't thought about that.’ I don't get the sense that a lot of institutions are aware of the immigration implications of this. … We’re facing largely the same issues that we’ve been facing when all this began. We’re getting a little bit more clarity as sort of the brain trust of attorneys that works on these issues comes together and figures out ways that we might be able to make it work for some athletes. But from a rules perspective, a government policy perspective, absolutely nothing has changed.” (link, link)
