MAAC Deputy Commissioner Jessica Grasso and North Texas Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Leadership and Culture Development/SWA Jessie Gardner sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention to reflect on the evolution of their respective leadership philosophies and how they seek to impact future generations of leaders. Gardner shares her “People, Passion, Purpose” leadership statement and the impact of mentors on her growth in the industry, and Grasso explains her “Leading Beyond The W” philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into leading a department or conference office. Gardner: “Understanding myself is the first step in leadership and then being able to then use my unique value, my skill set and then how do I use that to basically create that positive impact? … Operating from the standpoint of my faith is a really big part for me, so continuing to give myself that grace in the midst of it has helped me evolve it and really understanding that this you know I'm in this world for something greater than myself.” Grasso on the satisfaction of mentoring up-and-coming leaders: “You see yourself in them when you first started…and when they advance it makes you happy, it's a reflection of how you managed them or affected them and impacted them.” (link)

Central Michigan officials have provided their official list of issued "team area" sideline passes for the Chippewas’ game against Michigan State earlier this season, and FootballScoop’s John Brice reports: “Per the document submitted to and reviewed by FootballScoop, Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain and CMU athletics director Amy Folan ‘signed’ the document electronically in connection with their game at Michigan State. Connor Stalions, alleged mastermind of an illegal scheme that has shelved Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh for his second three-game suspension of this season, is not listed. The question remains, how did Stalions obtain a credential? Other than providing the credential form to FootballScoop, CMU has provided no update on its internal investigation into the apparent presence of Stalions.” (link)

USC Lincoln Riley on what his response would be if an NFL team called and said it wanted him to coach Trojans QB Caleb Williams next year: “Hell no. No. I’m coaching at SC. Period. I didn’t come here for some short-term thing and as long as SC continues to give us the support and the things we need to continue to build this, this was not a two-year rebuild. No. I’m going to be the coach at SC. Period. End of discussion. I’m so committed to this place because I know what it can be. And if that commitment continues to get matched around us, we’re going to do what we’ve got to do in here and make the adjustments, make the tough decisions, push on the good, own the bad, fix the bad. We’re in it through all the twists and turns and I wanted to make sure people knew that and the more people we have with that same attitude, the faster this thing’s going to get back to normal.” Riley also talks with The Athletic’s Antonio Morales about his relationship with Trojans AD Jen Cohen: “She’s got a great way about her. She’s got great experience. She’s got great juice and energy. And I think for the SC people that have had a chance to be around her, she is high level and she is high level in every sense of the word. She’s already made us better. … I was thrilled when President Folt made that hire and (I’m) kind of excited here through this offseason to continue to build it with her. That was a home run for USC.” (link)

California Men’s Basketball HC Mark Madsen has released a statement after student-athlete Fardaws Aimaq confronted a fan on Monday at the SoCal Challenge. “Throughout and after Monday’s game, Fardaws Aimaq was allegedly subjected to abhorrent and offensive comments from a fan — including being called a terrorist. I have asked the SoCal Challenge tournament director that a formal investigation be conducted and that this fan be barred from the premises. Fardaws and I had an important conversation today about how he needs to maintain his composure regardless of what takes place in a game or what is said to him directly. The consequences related to this situation will be managed internally.” (link)

Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz says it’s a “little tougher” to achieve sustained success in the current media climate and takes aim at the Worldwide Leader in particular: “With all the ESPN coverage and all that — in fact I was making a comment to a couple guys on the staff this morning, I was looking through there and saw three faces on that little thing on the left of your ESPN site where they’ve got the videos. Three guys that are basically coach killers or player killers that are just like — all they’re trying to do is just stir up controversy. So that’s kind of what’s out there now for people to take in. You wonder why there’s so much negativity.” (link)

Wisconsin Football HC Luke Fickell addresses the unique phenomenon of seventh-year seniors, saying: “This world today, I think we’ve still got a couple more years left of not knowing how old or what guys have left in the tank based on how many years of experience. I just saw Minnesota’s got a seventh year guy and I just saw a Utah quarterback (Cam Rising) is staying, he’s coming back for a seventh year. Is this still college football? I don’t know. I’m not sure it was meant to be six years, seven years. There’s a lot of those things still hanging.” (link)

Service academy student-athletes are unable to capitalize on NIL deals by virtue of their being classified as employees of their respective military branches, which means they are subject to the federal law prohibiting military members from using public office for private gain. However, the Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty points out there is no law prohibiting the branches themselves from partnering with other student-athletes the way the U.S. Army did with Connecticut women’s basketball student-athlete Paige Bueckers, who recapped a trip to Fort Knox as part of deal with GoArmy. Gonzaga professor Jeremiah Favara believes it’s a natural fit. “If someone is swayable, a U.S. Army TikTok account that mass produces an ad is way different than a student-athlete influencer, maybe at your institution, maybe at an institution you’re a fan of, saying: ‘Hey, I recently went to this military thing. I met with the ROTC, and it was really cool.’ It’s a peer-to-peer appeal as opposed to the military being this big institution trying to talk to youth.” (link)

Jackson State so far has yet to comment after Sean “Diddy” Combs, who donated $1M to the university, settled a lawsuit in which he was accused of repeated instances of sexual and physical abuse over the course of a decade-long relationship with R&B singer Cassie Ventura. Asked by Sportico’s Daniel Libit whether the lawsuit changed the university’s position on the donation, JSU responded: “No comment.” Combs has “vehemently” denied the allegations against him. (link)

MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher talks about the success of playing midweek football games, noting that playing on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays allows the league to avoid the crowded Saturday windows. “Whether it’s two games, four games, six games, whatever we’re televising that week, that’s our own infomercial for our institutions and for our conferences. And from that came this branding of MACtion, where we had high-scoring, exciting games, lots of action and somewhere along the way this phrase MACtion was developed. So, we jumped all over that, and we’ve just taken it and continued to build on it and build on it, and we’re one of the few conferences that has a catchphrase like that. You say that, people know what it means. This platform has also allowed us to take what was a really nice regional conference…and build a national brand for our institutions and athletics programs. So, our coaches can go anywhere in the country.” Steinbrecher views legalized gambling as a positive, noting that it’s out in the open now, whereas before it was happening in the “shadows.” With every state in the MAC footprint having legalized wagering, Steinbrecher notes he’s “rather be in a position where I”m engaged in this enterprise. I want to make sure we’re doing things to assist the appropriate folks in providing oversight, knowing what’s occurring, making sure that the information they’re receiving is accurate and up to date, that they’re sharing information back with us.” Lots more in the full Navigate podcast. Oregon State AD Scott Barnes has issued a statement amid reports that Michigan State is targeting Beavers Football HC Jonathan Smith: “Coach Smith and I have had ongoing conversations for more than a month regarding his future at Oregon State and our path forward for football specifically and our athletic department generally. He has embraced our short and long term plans. My No. 1 priority is providing him with a new contract and guaranteed compensation that will help continue the success of the football program that has benefitted Oregon State University and Beavers' Athletics. Coach Smith and I have also discussed our commitment to extending assistant coaches' contracts and increasing the salary pool for his staff to retain the continuity of what they have all built together for Beaver Nation." DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy acknowledges to WeAreDePaul.com’s Steve Newhouse that the 1-4 start to the men’s hoops season is “unacceptable” and adds: “We’ve got to start showing progress. That’s the piece. Last year we saw some progress by winning a game in the Big East tournament. That’s really the only point where we saw something. This year we’ve got to come out of this. We’re three years in. It’s not about a record or number of wins. This is a business where results matter.” Despite the rough start, Peevy points out the infrastructure around the program is “significantly better” than it was three years ago. “I’m not just talking about facilities. I’m also talking about financial planning and support. In my time, this is the first time the faculty, students, and staff want to see us win. That’s a big step forward and I’m not letting anything deter that movement.” Peevy goes on to call this a “crossroads time for us” and says: “I have a job and it’s to make sure we have a competitive Big East basketball program. We will get this fixed.” (link)

Utah and Gymnastics HC Tom Farden have mutually agreed to part ways. Utes AD Mark Harlan: "The past several months have been an extremely challenging time for our gymnastics program. Changes like this are never easy, and only come after extensive analysis and discussion. In this case, the decision provides necessary clarity and stability for our student-athletes and prevents further distraction from their upcoming season. I want to acknowledge the tremendous contributions Tom has made both as an assistant and head coach for the Red Rocks, and the significant accomplishments of the program in which he has played a key role. I am grateful that Carly Dockendorf has stepped in as the interim head coach.” (link)

Clemson is comfortable with its hire of Gymnastics HC Amy Smith despite allegations that she fostered a “culture of disordered eating” and verbally berated players at previous institutions. Tigers AD Graham Neff says the university took a “thorough” look into Smith’s background before hiring her in April 2022 and, after being “in dialogue with (Smith) prior to her hire and certainly since then” regarding the allegations, he and the Clemson athletic department remain comfortable with her hire. Neff: “Couldn’t be more excited for her support of her programs and student-athletes and our support administratively for those resources and expectations. Excited to kick off Clemson gymnastics here in a couple months.” (link)

+ Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders insists money won’t be the answer to fortifying the Buffaloes’ roster next season. “We’re not an ATM. That’s not gonna happen here. If you come to Colorado to play football for me and the Colorado Buffaloes, it’s because you really want to play football and receive a wonderful education. All the business stuff will be handled on the backend. But we are not an ATM. You’re not coming here to get rich unless you’re really coming here with a plan to go to the NFL and get your degree. Not to come here and be Moneybagg Yo. That’s a rapper, right? … We want players that want us. Trying to convince somebody and doing that, being held hostage financially, we ain’t with that.” (link)

Youngstown State has named U.S. Congressman Bill Johnson (R-OH) as its next president. Johnson’s appointment was met with vitriol from students and faculty members who take issue with his position on higher education, which he accused of promoting "cancel culture philosophy in their liberal halls." Asked about his comment, Johnson cited declining enrollment and said parents want to know that their children are “going to be educated, not indoctrinated,” adding: “Everybody's got their hair on fire because they think I'm going to bring my politics here, but if everybody else is allowed to bring their politics and ideology here and I'm not, how is that fair? I think everybody needs to leave their politics and their ideologies at home and let's focus on creating opportunities for our students where they could dream big.” (link)

Michigan State’s accreditation is under review after allegations made by trustee Brianna Scott against Board Chair Rema Vassar last month led to a complaint by the faculty senate. The Higher Learning Commission requires that schools’ governing boards are not influenced by donors and must not interfere with a university’s daily operations. The HLC’s response to the faculty senate explains: “Upon initial review of your complaint, HLC determined that the matter regarding Michigan State University raises potential concerns regarding the institution’s compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation. Due to these potential concerns, HLC will conduct a further review of the institution based on your complaint.” (link)

The NCAA two years ago considered eliminating the ban on in-person scouting of future football opponents because of its "minimal competitive advantage,” CBS’ Dennis Dodd reports. The proposal was “soundly voted down” after gaining support from just 12 of the 32 DI conferences, and Dodd notes the Big Ten was one of the leagues that voted against it. Dodd also points out that several coaches have confirmed they can figure out a team’s signals from game film without in-person scouting. (link)

National Football Foundation CEO Steve Hatchell tells SBJ’s Michael Smith the overall health of the sport continues to be sound, with more colleges playing football now than ever. Specifically, 772 colleges now sponsor football with 58 programs having been added in the last decade, including four in 2023 and another handful that are slated to begin play in 2024 and beyond. Meanwhile, the FBS graduation rate is around 82%, outpacing that of the general student population. Hatchell: “When [former Secretary of State] Condoleezza Rice received the gold medal from the [NFF] a few years ago at one of our dinners, she pointed out these things and she said, ‘If you look at what football is doing, football has it right.’ Those are the things that we'd like to focus on. We were thrilled this year, because I gotta tell you, this is really the best of the best -- and there's a lot of best out there right now.” (link)

The ability to elevate the distribution of all our original content will enhance the reach of our strategic objectives to millions of living rooms across the world.
