NCAA Director of Governance Susan Peal joined Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 Women Leaders National Convention to discuss the most recent policy changes involving the National Letter of Intent, specifically with the 4-4 transfer, whether an NLI exception was considered for an assistant coach/primary recruiter departure, trends the NCAA should be paying attention to in relation to the transfer portal, what the national office is doing in terms of supporting education with the portal and more. Trend-wise, Peal explains the NCAA is seeing NLI numbers returning to pre-COVID figures. “During COVID we had those in high school, they couldn't make recruiting visits, but at the same time then our current student-athletes were granted an extra season of competition, so those student-athletes who would have moved on and that would have opened up that athletic scholarship did not. Or maybe they did move on but they moved on to another four-year institution and then were replaced by a four-year transfer. … Because next year we’re working out of that covid extra season of competition, that's when I think we can really start to be able to look at the data of transfers, the data of initial enrollees, and see really what the landscape looks like.” Check out the full discussion on Connect. Auburn AD John Cohen talks about upgrades to Jordan-Hare Stadium and notes that “at some point in time we have to have a video board. We really have an old-school scoreboard there that, quite frankly, is probably on its last legs.” Cohen also says the Tigers would like to build out the north end zone with some premium spaces. “Auburn is one of those great, historic football powers that really demands premium options, as do many of the schools in the Southeastern Conference. Our demand is incredible. And we need to meet that demand, and the only way we can meet that demand probably is in the north end zone. So, we’re…starting the process and hopefully at some point we'll be able to begin the process of building out that part of our facility.” On the changing landscape, Cohen believes there “has to be a centralized organization that oversees compliance. There has to be a central organization that's empowered to make the really tough decisions without the threat of lawsuits. Right now, if you look at it, every positive thing that has been done for the student-athlete has resulted in a lawsuit. And I'm not being critical of the legal system…but if we're going to have a future in intercollegiate athletics, you have to empower a centralized agency to make these decisions without the threat of constant lawsuit.” Full Q&A. The field for this year’s NCAA Volleyball Championship is set with Nebraska, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh and Stanford each receiving No. 1 seeds. Four teams are making their first-ever tournament appearance: Coppin State, Grand Canyon, Omaha and Wofford. Penn State remains the only team that has earned a berth to all 43 championship tournaments while Nebraska and Stanford have appeared in all but one. Full bracket. (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh reiterates his position that players should share in the revenue: “As I’ve said, there’s a lot of people profiting. Coaches are profiting millions, and I’ve had people tell me, ‘Don’t say anything about that, that’ll take away money for the coaches.’ What I’ve been able to do is donate money back to the athletic department, which I did in 2021. But yeah, I would like for the players to be compensated. I’m using my voice and I would take less money for the players to have a share.” (link)

NC State Football HC Dave Doeren is calling on fans to donate to NIL collectives and is specifically asking 5K fans to donate $1K apiece so the Wolfpack can "recruit, retain and develop." Doeren calls the coming week "maybe the worst week in college football" with the opening of the transfer portal. The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel: “Dave Doeren makes $5M, and he's begging fans to donate their entire paychecks to an NIL collective. The model is so, so broken.” (link)

+ Texas A&M will hire Duke Football HC Elko for the same role, per multiple reports. TexasAgs.com Co-Owner/Executive Editor Billy Liucci: “And for those wondering, the decision to move on Elko was made late last night with AD and Board in agreement and lock-step. Press conference expected on Monday.” (link, link)
+ Mississippi State makes it official with Oklahoma OC Jeff Lebby as its next HC. (link); Members of the team were excited enough about the hire that they carried AD Zac Selmon off the tarmac Rudy-style after the two landed in Starkville. Here’s proof. (link)
+ Indiana has parted ways with HC Tom Allen and will pay Allen a total of $15.5M (down from $20.4M & removing mitigation), in two installments of $7.75M. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz adds: “With Allen's firing, per IU assistant coaches' contracts, the assistants – if not retained – would be owed buyouts through June 30, 2023, so this could cost IU another $2.85M, though, that's subject to duty to mitigate, with offset for IU.” (link, link, link)
+ Houston HC Dana Holgorsen has been let go after five seasons. The Cougars will owe Holgorsen $14.8M, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes that total is subject to a mitigation clause. (link)
+ ULM and Football HC Terry Bowden part ways after three seasons. Bowden went 10-26 (5-19) with the Warhawks & will be owed a buyout of over $180K. (link)
+ UTEP parts ways with HC Dana Dimel. The Miners just completed a 3-9 (2-6) campaign to bring Dimel’s six-season marks to 20-49 (10-34). Dimel’s buyout is $667K. (link, link)
+ Baylor HC Dave Aranda will return next season; however, Bears OC Jeff Grimes will not, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes DC Matt Powledge will keep the DC title, but Aranda will take over play-calling duties. (link)
+ Asked about his name being mentioned in connection with both the Houston and Texas A&M openings, UTSA’s Jeff Traylor remarked: “It’s very flattering. It means we won a lot of ball games. It means another job in the state of Texas has come open, and my name is in it. That’s what it means.” Traylor has been vocal about needing to increase funding for recruiting, nutrition and other areas, Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos says: “Every year Jeff and I have conversations about how to improve the program, and every year between university support and donors, we’ve been able to really invest in football, and we’re going to continue to do that. The number fluctuates, but we’re always looking at ways to improve the program.” Traylor has suggested the number needs to be around $2M. (link)

The Nicholls State football team was stranded at the Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois for over 22 hours after losing in the FCS Playoffs to Southern Illinois over the weekend. Colonels AD Jonathan Terrell: “A pilot went off the runway while making a turn. I guess that’s a big deal. So, they drug-tested him, and the drug test takes 12 hours. So, we had no pilot. We had a plane and no pilot. From that moment on, we got on the phone with Short’s Travel, who is the official travel company of the NCAA. Then we got on the phone with my commissioner, president, just trying to get through it. But all of this is happening because there was supposed to be a plane at 1:30, to come and pick us up. That plane, they canceled without telling us.” The 1:30 AM flight was canceled due to weather concerns, and there were no hotels in the area that could accommodate the team’s party of ~150. After being made aware of the situation, members of the Salukis’ athletic department brought snacks, water and Gatorade. The Colonels have since arrived safely back in Thibodaux. (link, link)

Former Syracuse Men’s Basketball HC Jim Boeheim comments on the current state of the game and says the NCAA “has put us in a position that’s almost untenable in terms of what's going on in college sports, and it just leads, really, to a breakaway almost of the top 80, 90 schools. And it almost is inevitable. It may not happen this year or next year, but I don't see how it doesn't happen at some point because there's nothing we can do about NIL, it’s here. There’s nothing we can do about transfer right away, play right away, that’s here to say. And there’s just not much that can be done in terms of changing those things. … So, it’s hard to really even talk about the NCAA right now because there’s just nothing really that they’ve been able to do over the past few years or that I see they can do. If I was in charge of the NCAA, I wouldn’t know what to do because there’s nothing that you can do right now.” More from The Field of 68. (link)

College football fans top USA Today columnist Dan Wolken’s final Misery Index of the regular season. Wolken explains the upcoming College Football Playoff expansion is “going to be better in some ways, but it's also going to rob college football of something that can’t ever be replicated again. At the end of Michigan’s 30-24 win over Ohio State on Saturday, the enormity of the result was clear. Michigan was headed to the Big Ten championship game and likely the four-team CFP, while Ohio State’s entire year of work to prepare for this moment was ruined. One side leaves in elation, the other in devastation because there is usually no second chance. You have to live with the result for the next 364 days. That’s what has separated college football from the NFL for decades, and it’s been a beautiful thing − even if your team is the one that suffers for it. There is no option but to care deeply about every single result.” Also in the Index: Florida, Oregon State, Nebraska and Auburn. (link)

Tucson.com headliner Greg Hansen does not believe any Arizona sport programs will be cut as a result of the university’s financial situation: “Cutting baseball (or swimming or track) isn’t going to make a dent in (President Robert) Robbins’ $240 million campus-wide situation. [...] Today, the school compiles about $21 million per year in ticket sales with another $20 million in contributions from those ticket holders. [...] The uncertain economic future of the University of Arizona has damaged the school’s brand and reputation. But eliminating sports isn’t going to fix the big financial issues. Not even close.” (link)

+ There was an hour or two late last night when a multitude of reports had Texas A&M hiring Kentucky HC Mark Stoops. TexAgs.com’s Billy Lucci says Stoops began telling those around him he was headed to College Station before the A&M board did a U-turn. Stoops later released a statement: “I know there’s been much speculation about me and my job situation the last couple of days. It’s true I was contacted about a potential opportunity this weekend, but after celebrating a big win against our rivals with players I love like family, I knew in my heart I couldn’t leave the University of Kentucky right now. I have a great job at a place I love, and I get to work with the best administration and greatest fan base in college football right where I’m at. I’m excited to say I’m a Wildcat!” (link, link)
+ Michigan State has announced the hire of Oregon State HC Jonathan Smith. Beavers AD Scott Barnes: “His decision follows weeks of conversations during which he expressed his support for OSU’s short- and long-term plans and appreciation for the efforts OSU made to provide him with a new contract and guaranteed compensation.” (link)

+ New Mexico AD Eddie Nuñez announces a change in leadership for the Lobos. (link)
+ Marshall AD Christian Spears says Football HC Charles Huff will be back to lead the Thundering Herd even though this season “has not met expectations.” Huff just completed his third season in Huntington with a 6-6 (3-5) mark & overall is 22-16 (13-11). (link)
+ Southern Miss HC Will Hall will also be back for the 2024 campaign. Hall is 13-24 (8-16) in his three seasons leading the Golden Eagles, which includes a 3-9 (2-6) mark this year. (link)
+ North Carolina HC Mack Brown after last night’s loss to NC State: “I think we addressed that last week. Yeah, I'm planning on being back. I hadn't even thought about it until y'all brought it up. It gets brought up every year. When you're 72, that's a regular you can just mark it down. It's the Thursday before the last game before recruiting starts, because everybody that's competing against you.” (link)

The Iowa Board of Regents last week approved several recommendations to significantly scale back the DEI efforts at Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa. The recommendations, which were the result of a study conducted at the behest of Governor Kim Reynolds, mandate the universities to, among other things, “take reasonable steps” to ensure that no campus constituent is required to submit any sort of DEI statement or be “compelled to disclose their pronouns;” prohibit the consideration of race and other protected characteristics in admissions “consistent with the law;” update general education category names “to accurately reflect the array of options students may select from to satisfy these requirements and ensure a breadth of offerings;” explore an initiative to promote education on free speech and civic engagement; and look into new recruitment strategies for “advancing diversity of intellectual and philosophical perspectives in faculty and staff.” (link)

The NBA, MLB and NHL have partnered with DraftKings, Fanatics, PENN Entertainment and the National Council on Problem Gambling to release a 30-second ad promoting responsible sports gambling. NBA SVP/Head of Gaming and New Business Ventures Scott Kaufman-Ross said it was important to educate bettors, especially young bettors, on the “inherent risk of sports gambling" and to "correct the misperception that it’s a good way to make money." Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft has approved final ballot language for a referendum on sports betting in the state. Organizers, which include a coalition of the professional teams in the state, will now choose one of eight versions to put before voters and before collecting the necessary 170K signatures across the state in order to place a question on the ballot. St. Louis Cardinals President Bill DeWitt III says the coalition will meet with executives in the mobile gambling app industry to discuss which version to go forward with and then map out a strategy for collecting the signatures. DeWitt also notes he’d prefer state lawmakers to come to an agreement this spring in order to avoid what will be an expensive media campaign for the voter initiative. (link)
