Adrian President Jeffrey Docking sits down with All Things Division III Soccer’s Paul Oliu about his strategy to growing enrollment through athletics that is the foundation for his 2015 book “Crisis in Higher Education: A Plan to Save Small Liberal Arts Colleges in America,” which helped grow enrollment from 800 to 1,800 students during his tenure. Docking’s three-legged stool for supporting new sports includes quality facilities, a full-time coach and support for program costs, which includes travel, game day, etc. As the president, Docking is keenly aware of the recruiting necessary for this strategy to be successful and gets weekly updates for applications, acceptances and deposits for each coach and their “quota.” Asked how the strategies in the book have changed since 2015, Docking observes the finances have gotten much more challenging, with economic and demographic changes, and that the strategy of investing in online education is no longer a failing strategy, given the technological advances and necessity due to COVID. Looking ahead, Docking says the end goal for this strategy puts enrollment at Adrian around 2K, beyond which point the college would need more dormitories, cafeterias and facilities, continuing: “We're building something that we call the College of the Future here. … And the College of the Future for us is a school of 2,000 with all of these activities, but actually, when a kid enrolls every year he or she is guaranteed that the cost of college will go down every year. That instead of ‘Oh, this year, it's going up 3% or 4%, or 2%,’ is that your most expensive days your first day, and that we'd be the first college and ultimately the first sector because there's just such a sector-wide interest in this to lower costs for students.” More. Luther receives a $10 million gift from Michael and Nicole Gerdin and the Gerdin Charitable Foundation, the largest individual gift in the college’s 162-year history, which will serve as the lead gift toward the expansion and renovation of the Regents Center, home to Norse athletics and Luther’s center for sports and recreation. Preliminary plans for the Gerdin Fieldhouse include a new entrance space for the public, a team meeting space, renovation of the locker rooms, and a new common area and study space for student-athletes. AD Renee Hartl: “Students are at the heart of all we do, and these gifts are really about them. Our campus becomes their home for four years, and we work hard to provide an environment where we exercise our minds in classes and labs and we stress and push and exercise our bodies as part of overall wellness and a strong tradition of NCAA Division III athletics.” (link)

The NCAA argues in a filing to the U.S. Ninth Circuit that the court should hear its appeal in the House v. NCAA class certification case because “denial of this petition would be the death knell of this litigation,” and Sportico’s Michael McCann points out that use of the phrase “death knell” is not an accident. “The petition’s use of the dramatic phrase ‘death knell’ was made with precedent in mind. In 2005, the Ninth Circuit held that while an interlocutory review of a class action ought to be a ‘rare occurrence,’ it is justified when there is a ‘presence of a death knell situation for either party absent review.’” The petition also rebukes U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken’s decision, claiming it demonstrates a misunderstanding and misapplication of the requirements for class certification. “Few things are more individualized than one’s NIL. Some star quarterbacks and individual gymnasts have received substantial NIL compensation; thousands of other athletes have received nothing.” The NCAA and Power 5 also maintain there is no way to determine the economic value of an athlete’s NIL unless it is done on an individual basis. U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) joined NBC News’ Chuck Todd to discuss their bipartisan bill (along with Senator Jerry Moran [R-KS]) and the creation of a College Athletics Corporation. Booker tells Todd: “I think college football and college sports in general is in crisis right now. We all see it, and this is nothing new that the almighty dollar has been controlling the game. We've seen time and time again over the years how that's been most often the most important principle, not the well-being of athletes. What we want to do is put athletes at the center of this finally, not only just empowering them with NIL rules but protecting them from a lot of the – frankly, exploitation – that we’ve seen over the years.” Booker also believes Congress should stay out of realignment as of right now but acknowledges it’s “very frustrating,” but “in the same way as a football player we know the story of Teddy Roosevelt saving college football, we have a role to play to protect folks.” Ultimately, Booker notes whatever action is taken will have to get 60 votes in the Senate, so “we’re not going to solve every problem.” Blumenthal adds: “I think there are limits to what Congress can and should do in this area, but I think really what’s most important is keeping our eye on the ball. What’s best for the athletes? And it isn’t just more dollars in their pockets. It’s also educational outcomes, health outcomes.” Full Q&A. (link)

International student-athletes could be immediately considered in violation of their F-1 student visa in the event student-athletes are classified as employees, immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells On3’s Eric Prisbell. In the event that happens, Maiorova believes the U.S. Department of Homeland Security would “have no choice but to take their heads out of the sand and actually consider how we change this.” From the university perspective, Maiorova remarks: “To the extent that I've brought it up to various stakeholders, that's just been kind of a novel concept for them – they just go, 'Oh, well, we haven't thought about that.’ I don't get the sense that a lot of institutions are aware of the immigration implications of this. … We’re facing largely the same issues that we’ve been facing when all this began. We’re getting a little bit more clarity as sort of the brain trust of attorneys that works on these issues comes together and figures out ways that we might be able to make it work for some athletes. But from a rules perspective, a government policy perspective, absolutely nothing has changed.” (link, link)
