U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) joined NBC News’ Chuck Todd to discuss their bipartisan bill (along with Senator Jerry Moran [R-KS]) and the creation of a College Athletics Corporation. Booker tells Todd: “I think college football and college sports in general is in crisis right now. We all see it, and this is nothing new that the almighty dollar has been controlling the game. We've seen time and time again over the years how that's been most often the most important principle, not the well-being of athletes. What we want to do is put athletes at the center of this finally, not only just empowering them with NIL rules but protecting them from a lot of the – frankly, exploitation – that we’ve seen over the years.” Booker also believes Congress should stay out of realignment as of right now but acknowledges it’s “very frustrating,” but “in the same way as a football player we know the story of Teddy Roosevelt saving college football, we have a role to play to protect folks.” Ultimately, Booker notes whatever action is taken will have to get 60 votes in the Senate, so “we’re not going to solve every problem.” Blumenthal adds: “I think there are limits to what Congress can and should do in this area, but I think really what’s most important is keeping our eye on the ball. What’s best for the athletes? And it isn’t just more dollars in their pockets. It’s also educational outcomes, health outcomes.” Full Q&A. (link)

The Portsmouth City Council has hit pause on plans to transfer Spartan Stadium and surrounding softball and park spaces to Shawnee State to gather more details on the impact a move would have on the community and if such a transfer would violate terms for property transfers. The university plans to renovate the softball facility to a world-class venue, adding: “The project presents a significant opportunity for Shawnee State to develop an athletic complex for its varsity team sports, intramural and student recreation, community outreach, and youth sports leagues. Such a project would provide much needed facilities to support SSU and improve a large area on the City’s waterfront ripe for development.” SSU has no plans to add Football to its portfolio, with Spartan Stadium to be used for Soccer and Track and Field. Adrian (NCAA DIII) President Jeffrey Docking sits down with All Things Division III Soccer’s Paul Oliu about his strategy to growing enrollment through athletics that is the foundation for his 2015 book “Crisis in Higher Education: A Plan to Save Small Liberal Arts Colleges in America,” which helped grow enrollment from 800 to 1,800 students during his tenure. Docking’s three-legged stool for supporting new sports includes quality facilities, a full-time coach and support for program costs, which includes travel, game day, etc. As the president, Docking is keenly aware of the recruiting necessary for this strategy to be successful and gets weekly updates for applications, acceptances and deposits for each coach and their “quota.” Asked how the strategies in the book have changed since 2015, Docking observes the finances have gotten much more challenging, with economic and demographic changes, and that the strategy of investing in online education is no longer a failing strategy, given the technological advances and necessity due to COVID. Looking ahead, Docking says the end goal for this strategy puts enrollment around 2K, beyond which point Adrian would need more dormitories, cafeterias and facilities, going on to note: “We're building something that we call the College of the Future here. … And the College of the Future for us is a school of 2,000 with all of these activities, but actually, when a kid enrolls every year he or she is guaranteed that the cost of college will go down every year. That instead of ‘Oh, this year, it's going up 3% or 4%, or 2%,’ is that your most expensive days your first day, and that we'd be the first college and ultimately the first sector because there's just such a sector-wide interest in this to lower costs for students.” More. U.S. District Judge Holly Brady has dismissed Title IX sex discrimination claims against former Huntington Track and Field HC Nicholas Johnson and other HU officials, citing a failure to prove the university was aware of the sexual misconduct and doping allegations against Johnson and was “deliberately indifferent.” Plaintiff attorney Jon Little plans to appeal as he does not agree with the ruling and states the allegations go far beyond a Title IX violation. Johnson still faces criminal charges for these allegations. (link)
