Despite a difficult end to the football season, Colorado AD Rick George is bullish on the Buffs moving forward. In addition to on-field improvement over last year, George notes the “exposure has been great. People are very interested in us. … There’s people all over the country that, it’s about football, but it’s more than football. What [HC Deion Sanders is] creating and the development of young men and all of those kinds of things are really important to people. While football is the driver that puts you there, it’s all the other things that have been very beneficial. People see that and recognize that and I think it’s gonna allow us to have great success in the future.” George adds: “I feel like we’re positioning ourselves for the future and recruiting is coming up and that’s gonna be really important for us. … I think if you go from last year to this year, where we are, we’re significantly better and it’s because of (Sanders’) leadership. That’s a fact.” (link)

USC AD Jen Cohen discusses an array of topics with the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, including the state of the athletic department when she arrived. Cohen explains that “whatever lack of stability was going on within the organization from a leadership standpoint, it didn’t necessarily trickle down to every student-athlete. So I think that’s positive. I think it’s just kind of basic organizational health. Like getting everybody to have clarity about their roles. We’ve been doing these exercises with our staff about everything from role clarification to clear priorities for the department moving forward and who’s going to do what and making tough decisions. Just general leadership. Because the department didn’t have a lot of that.” (link)

Washington, on behalf of the 10 outbound Pac-12 schools, has filed a motion for review with Washington Supreme Court, The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports. The deadline for motions to be fully briefed is December 12. (link)
|
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner also takes a crack at predicting what the Pac-12 will look like in 2033 and – time circuits on, flux capacitor…fluxing – congrats to Utah on its win over Stanford to capture the Pac-14 football championship. How did we get here? “Days before the [House v. NCAA] trial, in January 2025, the defendants – the NCAA and what was then known as the Power 5 – reached a settlement with landscape-changing repercussions. The schools were forced to pay $3B to the House plaintiffs for compensation prior to NIL becoming legalized in 2021. … What followed would once have seemed unimaginable but, by the mid-2020s, was considered inevitable: Athletic departments across the country were forced to downsize, with Olympic sports taking the biggest hit.” Also in the mid-2020s, the NLRB “circumvented legal precedent and determined college football and basketball players met the criteria for employment status.” The chain of events that followed led to a new wave of realignment in which Stanford and Cal realized “life in the ACC was untenable for their athletes in every sport save football. Once the Bay Area schools reset their mission, Duke, Vanderbilt and Northwestern were quick to follow. The creation of regional conferences for Olympic sports gave the academic-oriented schools enough cover to extricate themselves from the football machinery that created the 24-team CFB SuperLeague.”(link)

Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray catches up with San José State AD Jeff Konya to discuss the Spartans’ department-wide success, which last year included conference titles in baseball and women’s soccer, the second bowl berth in three years and the first 20-win basketball season since 1980-81. Konya: "We still have some historical things that we have to face and account for. We have to use those as learning opportunities for our culture and how we do business. But in terms of our reception and fans and how they're talking about the Spartans, it's a lot more positive. … I think success breeds success, and I think there's an energy in the department right now. When you start stacking some of these stories of success and you start seeing the fruits of some facilities coming online and you just see the brand being mentioned more positively.” More from Konya. + Iowa State extends Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury’s contract through June 30, 2030. (link)
+ Arkansas was able to rehire former Football HC Bobby Petrino as OC only with approval from President Donald Bobbitt, who oversees all 10 system campuses. Otherwise, Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson reports, the Razorbacks would have been prohibited from hiring an employee who had previously been dismissed for cause. Johnson: “When institutions do something that makes you scratch your head, the answer as to why is often simple: They wanted to, and so they did. In the coming days, the school will find ways to message Petrino’s return, because you can justify any decision in college sports if you try hard enough.” A letter from Chancellor Charles Robinson to Bobbitt requesting approval for Petrino’s hire points out Petrino has been employed by three separate schools since 2012 and has, by all accounts, “conducted himself in an appropriate manner and…to the best of our knowledge he has not committed any material violations of NCAA rules, institutional policies, or applicable law.” (link)

Disney CEO Bob Iger and Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoke separately about the challenges facing the sports media industry at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit, with Zaslav remarking: “I love sports. But the only product that we rent at Warner Bros. Discovery is sports. And when you rent a product, it’s always hard. When we do something great with ‘Lord of the Rings,’ it belongs to us. When we do something great with sports, we get to enjoy it and benefit from that until the deal is up. And when the deal is up, you get new rent.” Iger offered a similar perspective: “People love sports, and we have an unbelievably unique position in the world of sports. We want to stay in that business. It is a healthy business for us today, and it will continue to be … But like our other businesses, it has relied on a business model that is not as robust as it used to be.” (link)

Awful Announcing’s Daniel Kaplan wonders what the expanded College Football Playoff will mean for regular season viewership and, by extension, media rights value. Kaplan doubts, for instance, that viewership of last week’s Michigan-Ohio State matchup will be duplicated by any game going forward. “Across college football, the dynamic of racing for one of four golden tickets will dissipate, making for less appointment viewing, when top teams can afford to lose and still make the CFP.” Kaplan posits that a drop in appointment viewing doesn’t necessarily mean a dip in overall viewership, however, because “lesser games today would suddenly take on new meaning as eight more slots open up to the playoffs. And adding eight additional games to the playoffs will surely make up for any fall off in regular season viewership.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes: “People will say well, ‘I only did six and a half, eight million viewers (for a playoff game),’ but they don’t understand the reach factor and how most people don’t watch every game and everything. You’re gonna end up with more engagement, for sure.” (link)

Opponents of Northwestern’s plan to rebuild Ryan Field have filed a lawsuit against the city of Evanston, claiming some officials “cut a backroom deal” and violated residents’ due process rights. The complaint, which was filed by the nonprofit Most Livable City Association and roughly a dozen residents from Evanston and nearby Wilmette, seeks a declaratory judgment to invalidate the zoning changes. The lawsuit argues the project would negatively impact local homeowners by increasing traffic congestion, causing parking problems, decreasing property values and generating “noise pollution at levels violating state and local laws.” A spokesperson for Evanston says the city has yet to be served and therefore has no comment. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger asks several conference commissioners about the necessity of continuing conference championship games once the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams next year. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “We are in a period of change and assessment. Conference championships should be assessed. Is it necessary to play a 13th game?” Others, including Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco, also believe the role of conference championships should be evaluated, but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tells Dellenger: “As the conference with the most experience conducting conference championship games, we continue to believe it is an important part of determining a conference champion. The [expanded playoff] system is predicated on conference champions being identified in a clear way. As things change, we’ve had the conversation, but what I’ve described to you is the overall destination of that dialogue.” More. (link)

The College Football Playoff would like to sign multiple network TV partners a la the Super Bowl, according to Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy and Amanda Christovich, who report the CFP is “considering a structure that would rotate the title game among those media partners on an annual basis.” As of now, a structure has yet to be agreed on, but ESPN and Fox have reportedly already made their presentations to the CFP, and McCarthy and Christovich note: “ESPN might be willing to give up part of the CFP to pay for other expensive rights like the NBA, sources said. Cost-cutting Disney is no longer okay with ESPN simply outbidding rivals for marquee rights. Under chairman Jimmy Pitaro, ESPN has become more disciplined and picky: ESPN walked away from expensive Big Ten rights — despite a 40-year relationship with the conference.” (link)

The FBS and FCS Oversight Committees have adopted legislation to increase the number of official recruiting visits a school can host from 56 to 70 each academic year. The committees also adopted legislation that would prohibit schools from arranging for photographs or photographing prospective student-athletes or those accompanying them on unofficial visits. The DI Council will review the proposed legislation at the NCAA Convention in January. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit contrasts the disparate paths taken by New Mexico State and Idaho’s formerly embattled football programs, with the Vandals moving from FBS to FCS and the Aggies opting to remain in FBS. Former Idaho President Chuck Staben tells Libit: “I anticipated that there were going to be a few more schools that would go from FBS to FCS—New Mexico State being the primary one.” Aggies AD Mario Moccia: “If we were to drop our football down a level, my argument was the perception of the institution would go down. There are 133 teams in the FBS. The only more exclusive club is the United States Senate and we’ve got this thing in Las Cruces. Let’s embrace that.” Both Staben and Moccia can take some measure of vindication this season, with Idaho set to compete in the second round of the FCS Playoffs and NMSU sitting at 10-1, its best season since 1960. Moccia notes the buy-games at the FBS level can make all the difference, pointing out that had the Aggies remained in FCS, they would’ve been lucky to get fraction of the $1.85M the program received for traveling to the Plains to play Auburn; however, Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill contends that “the additional revenue in some of those FBS conferences gets eaten up so quickly by coach salaries and travel. It gets lost in the shuffle the fact that expenses are going to rise and you are going to be expected to come up with more and your donors are going to have to come up with more money.” More from Libit. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey says there will only be one game on ABC each Saturday as part of the league’s new deal with ABC/ESPN. According to CBS’ Dennis Dodd, Sankey notes that game "might be" in prime time. Dodd: “That would hint the prime time game would be the de facto window for the league's best game currently on CBS in the 3:30 ET window. Sankey clarifies: “With the new broadcast agreement, the SEC will have MORE broadcast TV windows available on ABC in the future. Currently, we essentially have one broadcast TV game each week. In the future there can be three SEC games on broadcast TV during a football Saturday.” (link); Meanwhile, the SEC Football Championship will be held in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium through at least 2031 after the two sides agreed to a five-year extension. The MAC has established a new football scheduling model that will take effect next season. The new model eliminates divisions and will send the top two teams based on conference winning percentage to the championship game. Under the new format, each team will play at least once home and away during a three-year cycle. The league has also inked a one-year extension to keep the conference title game at Ford Field in Detroit through the 2025 season. (link, link)

The Brandr Group has withdrawn its pending claims against EA Sports and OneTeam Partners in regards to athlete licensing for EA Sports College Football, Extra Points’ Matt Brown reports. TBG says in a statement that it believes it is in its best interest, as well as the best interest of student-athletes, to “monitor the progress of NCAA Football before determining whether further legal action is needed to protect its clients. Brandr takes this step following the recent settlement of past disputes with OneTeam Partners, wherein Brandr and OneTeam recognized their shared commitment to ensuring and protecting the maximization of the NIL value for all college athletes.” A statement from OneTeam adds that the two entities will “collaborate on future initiatives that benefit athletes and support them throughout their athletic careers.” Full statements.
