SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joins the Pat McAfee Show and says if there were to be some sort of breakaway from the NCAA, “I don’t think you just move football. That’s my view.” Sankey lists several championships and top draft picks from other sports in the past year and adds: “It would be tough to look the first-round MLB pitcher in the eye and say, ‘Well, we can’t do things for you because we’re in the NCAA.’ … We’re going to give leadership some time to show leadership, and we’ll have to figure it out after we see some direction.” Sankey also addressed the reveal of a portion of next year’s football schedule, saying: “We were trying to protect it because we have a show December 13, so somebody at ESPN apparently leaked it.” More from Sankey. The Mountain West announces a football scheduling agreement with Oregon State and Washington State for the 2024 season. All 12 teams will play seven traditional conference games in addition to one contest against either WSU or OSU for a total of eight games (four home and four away). The games against OSU and WSU will not count toward the conference standings, and neither Pac-12 school is eligible for the MW championship game. The league is currently working on the schedule itself, which it will release in the near future. Commissioner Gloria Nevarez: “This is a unique and unprecedented opportunity for Oregon State and Washington State to play against highly competitive Mountain West football programs in 2024. The scheduling agreement will expand the Mountain West footprint and enhance our national brand, while providing our student-athletes with new opportunities, all in line with our strategic priorities.” (link)

Delaware will add women's ice hockey as a varsity sport and join College Hockey America, effective July 1, 2025. (link); Also, more from Blue Hens AD Chrissi Rawak to Extra Points’ Matt Brown on the move to Conference USA: “I have to really credit (Conference USA Commissioner) Judy MacLeod. I think she’s a great leader, and Conference USA has been able to constantly completely reinvent themselves.” Brown continues: “While Rawak understands that Delaware doesn’t share many geographic similarities or institutional profile similarities with their new conference peers, she believes Delaware shares similar ‘ambitions’ and ‘athletic values.’” Rawak: “Different isn’t bad. Different is just different. During this process, we learned that we, at Delaware, care about the same things as Conference USA does.” (link)

Both men are legendary former Cavalier football players and one source said it would be “a dream for them to work together in that capacity. A separate source said Moore had yet to have any official contact with JMU about its athletic director position and Poindexter wouldn’t fit Bourne’s stated preference of someone with previous head coaching experience, but the ties to Littlepage are interesting.” (link)

A group of 32 Oregon female student-athletes (26 beach volleyball competitors and six club rowers) have filed a class action sex-discrimination lawsuit against UO. In the suit, they argue UO is violating federal law by providing disproportionate resources through Division Street, the Ducks NIL collective, and Opendorse, which hosts the Ducks’ official NIL marketplace. Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “Citing data Oregon submits annually to the Department of Education, the lawsuit notes that while women make up 49% of UO athletes, the school spends only a quarter of its total athletic budget and 15% of its recruiting dollars on them. Accordingly, the lawsuit states, Oregon would have to pay $4.5M to its female athletes for the past five years to account for just those discrepancies it makes public in compliance with the Equity in Athletic Disclosure Act.” The student-athletes are being represented by Bailey & Glasser attorney Arthur Bryant, who forced “ECU to reverse course after cutting women’s tennis and swimming/diving,” per the News & Observer’s Luke DeCock. Former Lafayette Men’s Basketball HC Mike Jordan has filed a wrongful termination and racial discrimination lawsuit against the university. Jordan, who was let go for “gross misconduct and/or insubordination,” is seeking $5M in damages. Jordan was let go following an investigation into his treatment of players, and his attorney asserts the termination was “a pretext for not paying him and for discrimination.” (link)

Utah, Utah State, Weber State, Utah Valley and Southern Utah are asking a judge to reverse a State Records Committee decision that student-athletes’ NIL contracts are public record. The schools argue that NIL contracts are protected under FERPA and are not subject to Utah’s public records law. They also contend the committee lacks the authority to order disclosure of the records. At issue is whether the contracts constitute “education records,” and the universities assert the committee declared they were not without reviewing them to see what information they contained. A California magistrate judge has indicated she will remove the breach of contract claims from a lawsuit filed by a former San Francisco baseball player, who alleges that former coaches created a sexually charged team environment. More behind the Law360 paywall. (link)

Nebraska Football HC Matt Rhule was accurate in his assessment that it would cost $1-2M to sign a good transfer portal QB, according to The Athletic’s Max Olson and Bruce Feldman, who note: “Agents and reps have been shopping high-profile transfer quarterbacks around for the past few weeks with asking prices in that range. And now that Rhule has said so publicly, the price is probably going up.” One Power 5 GM adds that the “going rate for a guy who’s going to go in Day 1 or Day 2 of the draft is $1.5M. This year, it might go to $2M just because there’s less people and competition.” The GM also notes that the market in recent years for veteran transfer QBs who just want to play one more season and boost their draft stock was closer to the $500K to $750K range, while highly rated freshman transfers with big potential might’ve been worth up to $1M. Meanwhile, “true NFL-caliber talent” will cost more. “That’s where I think it’s at right now, but now all these kids are thinking they can get $1M.” (link)
