Bacone is set to go on Sheriff’s auction this month and is in danger of closing after a contractor has sued for over a million dollars of work. Interim President Dr. Nicky Michael hopes “some sort of miracle happens with this and maybe the city can help us or a tribe wants to take us under their wing.” Michaels adds: "We have a judgment, and that judgment is beyond what we're capable of handling at the time. We did offer to make payments. They told us they wanted it all. […] I know it's been argued legally but here's the thing. There was supposed to be an account and that account was supposed to have been full before they started the work.” (link)

The Springfield News-Leader’s Ryan Collingwood details College of the Ozarks’ exit from and re-entry to the NAIA over the last few years. The contentions between the two began back in 2018 over a disagreement over whether student-athletes should have to stand for the National Anthem and devolved into C of O exiting back in 2021, with Collingwood noting the final straw for leaving is unclear. The exit did coincide with the Bobcats opting out of the Men’s Basketball tournament in 2021, the first one after the DI-DII merger, which NAIA President/CEO Jim Carr recalls was tied to finances. Now, under new leadership, the Bobcats are back in the NAIA after a stint in the NCCAA and a consideration of moving to NCAA DIII. Carr says NAIA tournaments may return to Branson at some point, but hoops will remain in Kansas City “for the foreseeable future.” Also of note, MBB will be ineligible for this postseason due to opting out of the postseason back in 2021. Texas A&M-San Antonio AD Darnell Smith sits down with @1QLeadership’s Tai M. Brown to talk about creating the culture and foundation for a new athletic department. Smith: “I had to create the vision, I had to hire the coaches and staff, I had to find the facilities, I had to get us into the NAIA as active members, I had to make sure our policies and procedures were up to date, and everything else you can think of to make an athletics department function. I looked at it like an artist, I had to paint a masterpiece.” On the culture Smith works to foster for the Jaguars: “The culture I try to set is I try to lead by example, right. … We all have to roll up our sleeves to be able to get the job done. So whenever I start to look at coaches, and whenever I recruit them, and as I was putting a team together, they have to have the same passion for the student-athlete experience and they have to have the same passion for being able to contribute towards that student-athlete experience.” More.
