Georgia tops the College Football Playoff rankings heading into this weekend’s slate of conference championship games, followed by Michigan, Washington, Florida State, Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Missouri and Penn State in the top 10, respectively. (link); CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock was asked about the tiebreaking criteria the Selection Committee will use to formulate its final rankings, specifically as it relates to the potential for Alabama and Texas to be fighting over the final spot, and replied: “Those tiebreaker criteria are not prioritized, so it'll be up to the judgment of each committee member which of the tiebreakers are more important to him or her. There's just no established priority for the tiebreakers.” Later in the Q&A, Hancock does however point out that the goal is to select the four best teams, not the most deserving. “Most deserving is not anything in the committee's lexicon. They are to rank the best teams in order, and that's what they do. Just keep that word in mind, best teams.” More from Hancock and NC State AD/Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan. (link)

Delaware will owe roughly $6M to the NCAA in entry and exit fees and has so far raised around $3.5M to fund the jump to Conference USA and FBS. Blue Hens AD Chrissi Rawak talks about the motivation for the move: “FBS football really enables so much for us from a university perspective, for our student-athletes and for our community. You know, right now, we are on FloSports and we’re competing, and the number of eyeballs that are watching us, it’s healthy, but it’s certainly not significant. And then as you think about being on ESPN and having ESPN+ as a platform for our student-athletes, and ultimately our university, I mean it’s 40 times what we get on Flo.” Men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, field hockey, men’s soccer, and rowing will not be joining C-USA, and Rawak says the department will be “working relentlessly to find a conference for them that will be a great fit.” She also insists the Blue Hens did their due diligence on student-athlete travel and notes the school is fortunate to be located 30 minutes from Philadelphia’s airport. “Travel for those student-athletes, while it’s going to be different because it’s going to be on planes versus buses, it’s not going to put our student-athletes in a position where they have to miss more class time. It’s actually going to be neutral.” (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller explains character was the most important trait he sought in hiring a new football head coach: “To be honest, the last search we did, the only time we talked to the candidates was when we flew to see them. We didn't do a lot of research. I know all these guys. I mean, I know probably six of the top coaches in the country really well, right now. And this guy, he just didn't start up here, but he just kept coming up and up. And the more I learned about him, the more I learned about his family, I knew he was our guy. …We were going after a person as well. We wanted a good football coach, but there was a type of person that we wanted to bring to our community here.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes the “(stay) ruling was issued by the Washington Supreme Court’s commissioner, not the court’s justices. As a result, WSU and OSU plan to appeal directly to the judges and request that they remove the stay to allow a critical preliminary injunction to take effect.” At or soon after the December 12 deadline for submitting all motions in the case, the Supreme Court judges will decide whether to hear the case or send it to an appellate court. WSU and OSU have also released a statement, which reads: “We are disappointed in the Washington Supreme Court Commissioner’s decision to temporarily allow the departing schools to have veto power over Pac-12 board matters while they appeal the superior court’s well-reasoned decision to grant Oregon State’s and Washington State’s request to govern as the Pac-12’s sole remaining members. … The lawsuit is still pending, and this motion was for temporary relief pending appeal. OSU and WSU will be seeking court review of the Commissioner’s decision.” (link)

+ More details on Michigan State Football HC Jonathan Smith’s contract, which includes up to $1.96M in bonuses annually in addition to Smith’s $7.25M annual pay. The bonus structure includes escalating incentives that start at $150K for reaching the College Football Playoffs to $400K for winning a national title. Smith would receive $200K for getting to a Big Ten championship game and another $200K for winning a conference title. During the first three years of the deal, Smith’s contract will be extended by one year once MSU wins its seventh game. For each added year by reaching seven wins, Smith will receive an additional $100K on top of his supplemental compensation. The contract is 85% guaranteed should MSU let Smith go without cause. Should Smith leave for another job, his buyout starts at $7M through Dec. 1, 2024, and drops by $1M every year through the length of the deal. The buyout would be cut in half if Spartans AD Alan Haller is no longer MSU’s AD. (link)

UTRGV yesterday broke ground on the $45M, 45K-sq-ft Vaqueros Performance Center. Slated to be complete by the fall of 2025, the facility will house the football program and be used by multiple sports and will include a state-of-the-art strength & conditioning facility for use by football and other athletics programs, an academic support center, a football locker room, football coaches' offices, a sports medicine facility, a team room with stadium-style seating, multiple meetings rooms, and additional office space to be used by other athletics personnel. Vaqueros AD Chasse Conque: “This is going to be a crown jewel for UTRGV and certainly for our athletics department. It's going to put our student-athletes in a position to have success early. … It's going to rival any in Division I FCS and it will certainly be the best in the United Athletic Conference. We've walked through, visually, every piece of this facility, every hallway, every turn, every nook and cranny, to make sure it's exactly what our coaches need and what our student-athletes need.” (link)

NIL Today…
+ Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek announces the creation of the Arkansas Edge NIL Collective, the “single collective to support all 465-plus Razorback student-athletes. As new emerging priorities through NIL arise, we must evolve in the way we support our student-athletes. After blazing the trail for NIL at the University of Arkansas, the ONE Arkansas Collective will soon dissolve in an effort to clear the way for the next step of NIL at the University of Arkansas – Arkansas Edge.” (link)

+ North Alabama inks a partnership with Athlete’s Thread to provide student-athletes with NIL opportunities through merchandise sales. Student-athletes will earn 12% commissions on all sales, with the opportunity to earn an additional 10-15% by sharing their affiliate link. (link)
+ On3 Founder/CEO Shannon Terry offers his perspective on NIL: “The greatest problem is the misinformation and misunderstanding that only 7,800 of the 520,000 NCAA athletes drive the revenue (015%). And only 20% of that number have NIL Valuations more than the value they receive in scholarships/perks = ~140k annually. Paying the 7,800 would be easy (there are billions in play from media rights). Paying the other 162,000 D1 Athletes beyond their scholarships/perks would break the system. Figure out this problem, and everyone wins.” (link)

Delaware’s move to Conference USA is official and will commence on July 1, 2025. The Blue Hens will pay $5M fee to the NCAA. Notably: “The Blue Hens will compete in Conference USA in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, track & field, and volleyball. There will be clarity in the coming months on where the other seven programs will compete in the future.” (link, link)

Oregon State and Washington State “are in the final stages of striking a football scheduling agreement for the 2024 season that includes a lucrative financial package for [Mountain West] schools.” According to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, OSU and WSU and the Mountain West are “finalizing the long-talked about partnership with an announcement planned in the coming days. The agreement, for now just one season, is expected to include a fee of about $14M paid to the Mountain West. The alliance is built around what’s termed a ‘7+1’ format where Mountain West teams play seven conference games — not eight — plus one game against either Washington State or Oregon State. There is an option to extend the deal to the 2025 season as well. … While there is not expected to be a contractual requirement for a long-term merger between the two entities, there is an intent and understanding of full-time membership for OSU and WSU in the Mountain West or a merger.” MWC home games would be broadcast by current partners Fox and CBS Sports, while OSU and WSU are “likely to negotiate separate broadcasting agreements with those networks and potentially others to televise their own home games.” (link)

Meanwhile, the Washington Supreme Court grants emergency motion to stay the preliminary injunction granting Oregon State and Washington State full control over the Pac-12. Motions for the review will be briefed by December 12, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner. A statement from the 10 outbound Pac-12 members reads, in part: “The decision effectively ensures that all 12 current members will have an equal voice in determining how the revenue our schools earned this year is distributed and utilized while the Court considers our arguments. … The combined earnings of 12 schools should not be unilaterally governed by just two institutions while we all remain members of the Conference.” (link)

San Francisco men’s basketball student-athlete Rob Beasley has filed a lawsuit to “enjoin the NCAA’s denial of his transfer waiver,” per Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, who adds: “The complaint alleges one cause of action, a violation of California’s unfair competition law. It’s a broad statute, but this is essentially an antitrust claim like the one many state AGs have been threatening the NCAA with. And SF Superior is notoriously plaintiff friendly.” (link); The suit alleges that after informing Beasley and USF that the waiver request was denied, the “NCAA case administrator further informed USF that USF would need to submit proof from someone at UC Davis that Plaintiff felt pressured to play, or a statement from a medical professional at UC Davis admitting that UC Davis could not provide sufficient care for Plaintiff’s medical needs. Such is not required by the NCAA’s rules. This appears to be an extra requirement made up to legitimize the NCAA’s refusal to grant a properly supported request for a waiver.” Full complaint. (link)

ECU Essentials…
+ Pirates AD Jon Gilbert says NIL funding likely needs to be at least $700K for football to keep pace with its peer institutions. “And I think from my chair, the biggest thing I can do is continue to advocate for NIL and how important those opportunities are because I’ve said a number of times we’re only as good as the players we have. If you look at the best teams in the country right now, you can argue they have the best coaches - I probably argue on the other side, that those teams have the best players.” (link, link)
+ Gilbert also addresses the progress on an indoor practice facility, which he expects to cost $22-25M, of which over $15M has been raised. “I feel good about where that is and we've got some significant ask out with donors to help complete that project. I think really if you look globally it's probably the last big piece from a facility standpoint that we need. … From that point forward you're focusing on renovations or upkeep, and so I think the indoor building is important, but I go back to we're only as good as the players that we have, and NIL is going to be really important in the type of roster we have next year.” He goes on to acknowledge that embracing the new NIL/transfer model is the key to sustained success, “and I hate that because that’s really not the collegiate model that I grew up with. And I've been in the business a long time, but if you really think about the model, we've changed in the last two years probably more so than we've changed in the last 20, and so you are seeing a lot of things that are happening that haven't happened before.” Full press conference. Robert Morris will rejoin the NEC as an associate member in football next season. Colonials AD Chris King: “The move to rejoin the NEC as an associate member in football restores longtime local rivalries with Duquesne and Saint Francis U as well as the NEC football playing members within our geographic footprint, which will have a positive impact on our scheduling and travel.
