Congratulations to Florida State on winning this year’s women’s soccer national championship, the team's second title in three years. FSU HC Brian Pensky, who came to Tallahassee in April of 2022: “When I got here, we had nine players who were not in the transfer portal. We had to roll the ball out the next day or we'd be down two [players]. We had to convince some and some went pro, but we got 20.” Seminoles AD Michael Alford on Pensky and the program’s growth: “Finding someone of his character was very important. But then it comes with the background of being a former ACC Coach of the Year, SEC Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year. He had the accolades. You knew that the program was in great hands. … On the pitch, off the pitch, they play for one another. We’ve seen the team come together, we’ve seen the culture change and they’re having fun.” (link)

AthleticDirectorU & Illinois Chief Commercial Officer Tom Moreland surveyed FBS ADs to gauge their sentiment on the need for a FBS Commissioner or leadership panel to govern the sport. It’s the same survey ADU & Moreland conducted with FBS ADs two years ago. Here’s what you need to know: “...the number of FBS leaders who ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ FBS needs a commissioner or similar leadership position to lead the FBS conferences has increased from 57.4% to 76.2%. Overall, fewer disagreed with the idea and, notably, not a single respondent indicated that they ‘strongly disagreed.’” One notable comment from an FBS AD: “(A commissioner or leadership panel) would only work if the conference commissioners ceded some of their power and autonomy and allowed this new commissioner to make decisions on behalf of all the conferences. Because of this, I don’t think it would work. [There] would end up just being another voice at the table without any real authority to get things done on behalf of all FBS conferences. Furthermore, all the FBS conferences are so diverse, especially as it comes to funding models, that a commissioner or leadership group would not be effective for all FBS conferences. It may work if we separate out the conferences by Group of Five and Power Four.” Lots more survey data & commentary from ADs. Not behind a paywall. (link)

Extra Points’ purveyor Matt Brown wonders who could be the 12th member of Conference USA, should the league want to add more teams. On the possibility of UMass, Brown doesn’t expect that to happen in the immediate future: “Part of this is simply a function of the calendar. Conference realignment decisions are driven by presidents, not ADs, and the dirty little secret is that with so many senior academic leaders traveling (or just out) around the end of the Fall academic term and the holiday season, it’s harder to get major decisions approved before the end of the year. I’ve also been told that the A10 doesn’t have a bylaw that would prohibit UMass from participating in conference tournaments if they were to hypothetically announce a conference change this season. Industry sources have told me that UMass would owe a four million dollar exit fee if they announced an A10 departure for the 2025-2026 season before the summer, and a five million exit fee if they announced after July. … For what it’s worth, multiple industry sources have also told me that any future conference additions for Conference USA are expected to be for all sports, and not football-only affiliate memberships.” Brown also digs into the future of the CAA, says there is “legitimate worry among several schools, not just Richmond, that the league membership is changing in a way that may force them to reevaluate if this is the best league for them.” More. Stephen F. Austin is D1.relocation’s newest athletic department partner. The Lumberjacks will utilize D1.relocation’s customized relocation services to assist coaches, administrators and their families with the transition to Nacogdoches. Lumberjacks AD Ryan Ivey: “We are excited to partner with D1.relocation to provide all of our new coaches and staff a one stop shop for their transition needs. Transition is a constant part of working in intercollegiate athletics. As such, it is critical that we provide as seamless an experience as possible for our new team members, and their families, as they relocate to Nacogdoches and East Texas. This partnership will provide all of our new team members with quality service as they begin their relocation process, and provide one less item to stress over.” (link)

Former LSU Assoc. AD for Football Recruiting and Alumni Relations Sharon Lewis can pursue her claims of retaliation and a sex-based hostile work environment against the athletic department, though U.S. District Court Judge Susie Morgan ruled there is no timely evidence of Lewis’ claim that LSU fostered a race-based hostile work environment. SBJ’s Ethan Joyce profiles some current ways in which teams and leagues are implementing AI solutions, including as a means of engaging fans for marketing purposes. Milwaukee Bucks VP of Digital Marketing and Automation Ben Conrad recalls that coming out of the pandemic, the team had more sales leads than it was able to keep up with. “If we can use an AI assistant to help do some of the initial reach-out, we can then make our reps’ time more valuable.” By partnering with Conversica and its revenue digital assistants, the Bucks were able to bypass random outreach by identifying relationships they could cultivate. “Instead of putting 100 cold-ish leads into the pipeline, we’re putting 100 leads of people who have raised their hand at some level into the pipeline.” Conrad explains the Bucks have created 10 different conversations for fans based off potential questions they may ask. Each time people are added to the team’s marketing list, a path is kicked off. Conversica CEO Jim Kaskade notes the platform is “programmed to never say the same thing twice to a fan. So it’s always trying to be different, in the way it introduces itself and follows up with you. That way the end user really does get that human experience, and technology-wise, we don’t get spammed into the spam box.” More from Joyce. (link)

+ Meanwhile, San Diego State will pay former Football HC Brady Hoke $3.5M between now and June 30, 2027. Per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, Hoke must "remain available to consult as requested” and "shall not be required to perform, and shall not perform, any other job duties." Hoke had been scheduled to earn $4.86M over that time frame and would have been due all of that amount if he had been let go without cause. If Hoke obtains new employment, his deal with the Aztecs ends, and his pay from SDSU will be offset by any earnings from the new job. (link)

The Premier League has sold its UK television rights for 2025 and beyond in a reported $8.5B auction. Comcast-owned Sky secured four of five packages of live games with Warner Bros. Discovery securing the remaining package. Amazon, which had held a rights package with the Premier League since 2019, did not renew its partnership, and Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams observes: “If Amazon's thinking is that it only needs a few years of sports rights to extract the value they want (new sign-ups to Prime), then hoo boy would that be news to U.S. sports leagues that expect streaming giants to fill in for shrinking TV bidders.” (link, link)

The sports rights market overall is getting tighter, according to SBJ’s John Ourand, who writes: “NASCAR should be proud of the 40% increase in the average annual value of the new deals. After all, the Premier League is being celebrated for a U.K. deal announced today that represents only a 4% increase. The truth is that while NASCAR executives are happy with the new deals, the sport would have seen a much bigger increase a year ago.” NASCAR SVP for Broadcasting and Innovation Brian Herbst: “There was a lot more kind of consternation in the process and discipline from the media companies. I'm not saying that it is more than we expected, but certainly all of these media companies are under the microscope more now than maybe they would have been two years ago.” Meanwhile, Ourand wondered what impact Warner Bros. Discovery’s deal with NASCAR would have on its desire to retain its NBA rights, and WBD Sports Chairman and CEO Luis Silberwasser tells him: “We want to add to our portfolio; we want to grow. That also involves continuing to have the NBA.” Silberwasser also says the NASCAR deal will help WBD Sports extend its sports calendar, with the races coming after the NBA and NHL playoffs end. Alaska Airlines will acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a deal valued at roughly $1.9B, pending approval from federal regulators. The companies expect the transaction to close in 12 to 18 months, and Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci expressed confidence that the deal will get approved, citing 12 overlapping markets, a combined 1,400 daily flights and a larger network that he said would allow the airline to compete with the four largest carriers. “We are hopeful that it will be seen in a positive light.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips last week “quietly lobbied leaders in both parties – including Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) – to back legislation that would set national standards on how collegiate athletes can profit on their name, image and likeness,” CNN’s Manu Raju, Clare Foran and Morgan Rimmer report. Sankey last week told Raju: “The risk is we see states further build walls around their recruiting grounds, thinking that that somehow provides a competitive advantage. The risk is that more and more young people sign agreements that they don’t understand. The risk is we move further and further from the academic nature of college sports.” Phillips added: “We need protection for our student athletes. You know, some of the situations that they find themselves in, trusting advisors that steer them in the wrong direction end up being really counterproductive and harmful.” With bills from multiple lawmakers on the table, Pettiti believes there is “enough positive in all the bills, to be honest, that we can work with some combination. The effort has been, especially over the last few months, let’s try to bring people together. There’s a lot of staff putting time in it. How can we get those staff to bridge and come together to have something.” (link)

With Washington State and Oregon State having agreed to a football scheduling partnership with the Mountain West, Cougars AD Pat Chun says the Cougars are working on building out schedules for the school’s other sports. “They’re all urgent, and we’re working on those in parallel tracks right now with trying to get this football piece done.” Could WSU and OSU play each other twice in a home-and-home series? Chun was open to that possibility, though only as a last resort. Chun also says the Pac-12 logo will still adorn WSU’s jerseys and home field and says of potential media partners: “We’ll work with Oregon State through the conference to identify television opportunities and partners. As normal with traditional TV agreements, we’ll control the rights to all of our home games. So we’ll begin that process in short order as soon as we finalize the football schedules.” (link)

Army West Point AD Mike Buddie acknowledges the move to the AAC isn’t baggage-free, telling SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “There will be plenty of people who don’t support the move, especially with our graduate population, who still have some scar tissue from the Conference USA adventure of 1998. It’s not even the same global situation right now. So many things are different, from college football to the transfer portal and name, image and likeness, it really just transformed how and where we can be competitive. … To be honest with you, before SMU [announced it would join the ACC], Mike Aresco had just checked in and said, ‘Hey, if there’s any more shifting, would you have any interest?’ I’m sure he did that for multiple schools, but for the first time since I had arrived at Army, the answer wasn’t ‘No, we’re not doing it at all.’” Portnoy notes Army will “receive its football-only cut of the AAC’s 12-year deal with ESPN, worth $83.3M annually, on a graduated basis,” but neither AAC Commissioner Aresco nor Buddie would disclose when the Black Knights would receive their full share. ESPN’s Heather Dinich pulls back the curtain on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s decision to leave out Florida State. One committee member tells Dinich: "All of us had the emotional tie, like, 'Holy s---, this is really going to suck to do this.’ We talked about that over and over, and we just kept coming back [to] are they good enough with what they have to win a national championship, and it just kept coming back [to] we didn't think they could." And the committee has remained steadfast in its belief that it got the field right, with a member remarking: "At the end of the day, everybody had the same goal in mind – do we have the four best teams? And we all felt pretty good that we do.” Another source insists that “people may not believe it, but we don't say, 'Oh gosh, if we vote this way, the SEC is going to be left out. That never came up. Ever. We literally look at teams, put them up against each other, and say, 'Who did they beat? Who did they not beat? Who have they beaten on the road? What's their strength of schedule?' Look at the matrix and all the data." (link)

U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) is “demanding answers and transparency from the
College Football Playoff Selection Committee following its unprecedented exclusion of
Florida State from the playoffs.” In a letter to NC State AD/Selection Committee Chair Boo Corrigan, Scott requests immediate answers regarding the “listing step” and “ranking step” votes of each committee member; notes, reports or recordings of the deliberations; and any and all written communications between Selection Committee members with one another, with the CFP Management Committee, with ESPN and/or the SEC, and with any individuals not affiliated with the CFP. Scott: “There are hopes, dreams and billions of dollars in economic activity that hinge on the decisions made by the 13-member group that you lead. Given the unprecedented nature of your recent decision, an unprecedented commitment to transparency is required.” (link)
|
Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that Scott has the power to call a Senate hearing and “compel testimony and evidence sharing” as described in the letter. Also: “At least in theory, FSU could sue the CFP, arguing its decision is illegal. A legal claim might rest in antitrust law—FSU could correctly assert the CFP is led by university and conference leaders from competing schools. Perhaps they joined hands to exclude FSU, thereby depriving the marketplace and college football consumers and fans of the chance to watch the superior team. CFP’s selection methodology could also be depicted as faulty in that it invites subjective bias, which might make anticompetitive outcomes more likely. … In addition to antitrust law claims, FSU could argue the committee failed to accurately apply its own methodology in excluding the Seminoles. This would be a breach of contract or negligence type of claim. Maybe the system itself is lawful, but how CFP utilized it was problematic.” The “fundamental legal problem for FSU,” McCann notes, is that “as a member school of the NCAA, it has agreed to the playoff system it now finds unfair. This is the core weakness of most legal claims brought or considered by colleges who feel aggrieved–rightly so in some instances–by the ‘system.’ Unlike a college athlete suing the NCAA and its members over a rule that limits compensation, a college is one of those members, an insider if you will.” More from McCann.
