On3’s Eric Prisbell examines how NCAA President Charlie Baker’s player compensation proposal will impact collectives, and Walker Jones, executive director of the Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective believes it won’t make collectives obsolete as much as it will refocus them on revenue-generating sports “to maintain some anonymity from Title IX. Maybe collectives only focus on football and maybe men's or women's basketball in some cases, or baseball. It would definitely change collectives' missions and who they are contracting with." Before Baker’s proposal was unveiled, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham told On3: “Universities are not prepared to bring collectives or other elements of NIL in-house. There are too many unanswered questions about employment, compensation, antitrust, Title IX and Title VII that must be considered." (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner unpacks what NCAA President Charlie Baker’s student-athlete compensation proposal means for Pac-12 schools, noting that USC, Washington and Oregon would all certainly join the new subdivision. Others would as well, but to what extent is up for debate. In addition to budget problems, there are philosophical considerations. “Would all the Pac-12 schools be willing to join the world of uncapped payments to athletes? Is Stanford ready to take that step? Is Cal? Longtime NCAA watchers wondered if the autonomy provided by Baker’s subdivision might delay the endgame many foresee, with the heavyweight football programs breaking away from the NCAA in the 2030s to create their own league, a mini-NFL.” The opposite possibility also exists, though, as Wilner submits the proposal may only expedite the creation of a SuperLeague, especially if schools “must pay into the trust funds (outlined by Baker) and share media revenue with athletes (as dictated by a loss in the House case). … We often describe college football with a broad brush, as the Power 5 and the Group of 5, but those terms don’t reflect the sport’s true hierarchy. In reality, the eight or 10 schools that drive billion-dollar media deals are subsidizing everyone else.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher wants to know why Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff “turned his back” on Washington State and Oregon State. “The commissioner expelled USC and UCLA from the board in the summer of 2022 when the Trojans and Bruins announced they were leaving for the Big Ten. The Pac-12’s board subsequently met 20 times without the two LA schools. Nobody objected.” Again, nobody objected when Colorado was removed from the board room for five meetings with the remaining members. “And on August 9, the morning after the conference splintered, Kliavkoff texted me: ‘As of today we have 4 board members.’” Why, then, the about-face? “It’s possible that Kliavkoff is incompetent. Some of the Pac-12 presidents/ADs have suggested this to me. … Or maybe the commissioner heard multiple Washington State and Oregon State officials indicate publicly that Kliavkoff wasn’t part of their future. Did Kliavkoff fear OSU and WSU were going to fire him? With cause, maybe? It’s the $3.6M question.” OSU and WSU, Canzano continues, “were the only schools who actually signed the grant of rights with the Pac-12 last August. Did you know that? The evening before Oregon and Washington announced they were out, those two schools used DocuSign to commit to Kliavkoff’s conference. They were all-in on the Apple deal.” (link)

San Diego State AD John David Wicker and Snapdragon Stadium GM Adam Millar discussed the ins and outs of running the stadium during this week’s SBJ Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, and Millar noted the venue has hosted 120 events and had 1M people walk through the building, and for a “stadium with a natural grass field, those are pretty good numbers to start with.” Snapdragon is set to replace its grass for the fifth time in two years, and with several sports playing there, Wicker said it’s “just something they have to deal with,” but he added: “The thought that every year, our fans are going to show up on the site for Aztec football or whatever it is, MLS, NWSL, and it's going to look different” keeps him up at night. On the ingress/egress, Millar explained that it’s “been something that J.D. and I and others have been really involved in and trying to improve. We're in a much better place today, 15 months into it, than we were in September of 2022. But it's always going to be something that we're working on and we're in a site that's going to continually change over the next 12 years.” Wicker also commented on the relationship with MLS ahead of San Diego FC’s 2025 debut: “We've done as much as we can to make sure that they can monetize the stadium.” (link)

Also from SBJ IAF this week, RedBird Capital Founder/Managing Partner Gerry Cardinale offered suggestions for the college sports model and told John Ourand that college sports collectively rival the largest American pro leagues but have so far failed to match their economics due to fragmentation, particularly with each conference negotiating its own media rights deal. “What that leads to is a disparity. Not only a disparity between some of the conferences that have $8B TV contracts versus others who have half that amount, but when you mark yourself to market against the NFL, what you see is a huge gap. In terms of total revenue, you’ve got a five-to-one differential. In terms of media revenue, you have a 10-to-one differential. We should close that gap.” Cardinale suggested college sports move toward a “unified rights-based media product,” particularly as sports media shifts toward rebundling. He also floated the idea of student-athletes partnering with athletic departments on group licensing initiatives and noted that athletic departments may ultimately need more freedom from their parent universities to “find ways to monetize the fanbase and create a partnership with the players that embraces them” in areas like NIL. Cleveland State AD Scott Garrett and AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown sit down the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss a number of topics, including how Garrett emphasizes the importance of a shared vision across the university and how his department— including administrators, coaches, support staff and student-athletes— operates with a “we not me” mindset and service-oriented mission. Garrett sums up the paradox of achieving consistent success with a quote from a mentor: “Yesterday’s records are tomorrow’s expectations.” Garrett on the process of preparing for success: “What we talked about initially with our staff and coaches early on was what is this supposed to look like from a leadership and a modeling behavior perspective. So, we talked a lot about being present and visible on campus, being great partners, supporting the entire academy, getting to know our faculty and staff and deans and presidential cabinet leadership. So, everyone playing a role and how do we make sure that people understand the impact of CSU athletics across the entire institution. … We really challenge ourselves to really think thoughtfully about what are things that we all kind of line up, what are a couple of priorities in each of our sports programs? Not eight or 10 or 12 priorities, but let’s define what's really, really important to have the type of year that we would like to have and get everybody aligned.” Full conversation. (link)

The MAAC has begun a new strategic planning process, led by Fairfield President Mark Nemec. Commissioner Travis Tellitocci: “The intercollegiate athletics landscape is in an unprecedented time of transformation, and the MAAC Council of Presidents is tackling these fundamental changes with openness, creativity, and awareness of how policy and market changes may impact our schools. The presidents are unwavering in their commitment to academic and athletic excellence as they plan for the future of the MAAC amidst the changing Division I landscape." (link)

Penn State has filed a lawsuit against LEARFIELD claiming the company isn’t entitled to information regarding its bidding process under right-to-know laws. PSU reportedly plans to sign a multimedia rights partnership with Playfly Sports once its contract with LEARFIELD expires at the end of May. As such, LEARFIELD sought information about Playfly's bid, the criteria the university used to make its decision, communications among Penn State’s top executives and more. LEARFIELD explains in a statement that “our request for information, as part of the university’s stated policies, is meant to make the (request for proposal) process one that is transparent for all bidders.” (link)

Former San Diego football student-athlete Kollen Murphy has filed a lawsuit against the university, making him the second former player to bring forward allegations of hazing. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler, Murphy’s suit corroborates several incidents alleged by former QB AJ Perez in the first suit and adds new allegations. USD says it’s aware of the second lawsuit, adding: “As noted previously, our own internal inquiry continues but is not yet complete. The university takes reports of violations of the student code of conduct with the utmost seriousness and condemns acts of hazing and bullying of any kind. As reported previously, Coach (Brandon) Moore had no advance knowledge of the allegations.” The complaint, which describes several incidents in further detail, contends, however, that “it is believed that the head coach had knowledge of many of these offending acts.” (link)

Moody’s Investors Service assigns higher education a “stable” outlook for 2024 and projects that “revenue gains will materialize across multiple sources as the residual impacts of the pandemic wane” and “expense growth will moderate as inflation cools, preventing further deterioration in operating performance for most of the sector.” Specifically, Moody’s forecasts revenue growth of 4% and adds: “The outlook could move to positive if revenue growth significantly overtakes expenses, supported by material strengthening across multiple sources. A negative outlook could materialize if revenue stagnates and expense growth fails to slow, leading to further erosion in sectorwide operating performance.” (link)
