Southern Connecticut State selects Jackson State (DI) Asst. AD of External Operations and Stadium Management Terrance Jones as its next AD. Interim President Dwayne Smith: "Terrance brings a proven leadership background to the position, with many years spent as an athletics administrator. Ferris State leadership sat down with The Ferris State Torch to provide a fall state of the department, with AD Steve Brockelbank stating of the vision for FSU: “I think for us, our vision is to continue to be a premier NCAA program. [Our programs] continue to compete at a high level, which we’ve been able to do for a number of years here. We’re awfully proud of the fact that we’re capable of doing that and we want to continue to do that going forward for a long time. [Our vision] is defined by winning championships. It’s also defined by academic excellence and personal responsibility. So those are the three things that we talked about in our vision that we believe is really important for us as an athletic department.” President Bill Pink and Brockelbank acknowledge the need to upgrade multiple facilities, with Brockelbank noting: “From a facility standpoint, at some point, I would love to see something done with football. We know that needs to happen. We know at some point we probably need to have an indoor [facility] and at some point we need to do something with hockey … Those things would be fantastic to see happen at some point. I don’t know when or where but I think it’s at some point … Our student-athletes have been fortunate to experience a high level of competitive and academic success. For this to continue as an institution we need to be intentional about investing the resources necessary for long term success.” FSU is also exploring the sale of alcohol at sporting events, although no decision has been made. Transfer Tension:

+ U.S. District Court Judge John P. Bailey has granted a 14-day temporary restraining order prohibiting the NCAA from enforcing its transfer waiver rules. The TRO also prohibits the NCAA from enforcing its rule of restitution, which allows punishment for playing athletes who are later deemed ineligible. During the hearing, West Virginia (DI) men’s basketball student-athlete RaeQuan Battle compared his “NIL contract” at WVU to an employment contract and argued the NCAA is preventing him from accessing his full payment. “I’m not going to get what I signed for.” A full hearing is set for December 27. + As for how many schools will play student-athletes while the rules are suspended, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter remarks: “I think it’s unlikely the NCAA tries to enforce its transfer rules against any athletes now. It will instantly get sued. And I think the judge is also likely to grant a preliminary injunction after the end of the TRO’s 14 day period.” Winter also points out that to grant a TRO, a court “has to find there’s a likelihood of success on the merits of the underlying claims. This means the judge believes the state AGs will likely prevail on their claim that the NCAA’s transfer waiver rules violate fed antitrust law.” (link)

+ The NCAA says in a statement to Ross Dellenger that as a result of the decision, it “will not enforce the year in residency requirement for multiple-time transfers and will begin notifying member schools.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker talks with Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde about his student-athlete compensation proposal and doesn’t dispute that it’s at least in part a way of signaling to Congress that college sports is being proactive. “I’m working on the theory that not just people in Congress, but people in and around college sports, who would like to see the NCAA chart a course here, create a direction. I certainly heard from a lot of the folks I talked to who said, ‘You all need to be forward-facing if we’re going to make progress here.’ Which I understand.” The proposal has already achieved its goal of sparking a conversation, and Baker tells Forde: “One of the best parts of this, I’ve already had people reach out to me and say, ‘What about doing this instead?’ The one thing I said to people when I was talking to them, I said, ‘Don’t say no.’ People have already started to take that idea and propose alternatives to it—which is fine. That’s kind of the whole purpose of it. I’ve seen very little pushback. The big message from almost everybody was, ‘Thank God we’re finally talking about the elephant in the room.’“ Baker goes on to remark: “I’m very anxious to make sure that when we come out of this, we don’t lose all the sports that are the so-called non-revenue-producing sports. I want those to continue to be a big part of the show. But at the same time, we’ve got to recognize—especially at the highest-resourced institutions—more has got to be done here.” (link)

+ Ashland has established the Gay Whieldon Women's Athletic Scholarship Fund following a “high seven-figure” bequest, the largest in AU’s history. “Ashland recently received the first distributions of the gift, a total of $2 million.” (link)

Live from the Permian Basin:

+ Texas Permian Basin AD Todd Dooley on the next steps for growing the football program, following a new contract for HC Kris McCullough: “I think having these pieces in place long-term really helps us build on that momentum. Our next steps are football stadium, revamping all of our athletic facilities, all of these things so we have it on campus and we do have that attraction and appeal as a college football town.” (link)

Sport Sponsorship:

+ The SSC will add Beach Volleyball and Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track to its portfolio next year, increasing the league’s total sports sponsorship to 21. The current membership includes six Beach VB programs and eight Outdoor Track programs. (link)

+ East Central will bring back Men’s and Women’s Golf next year after a seven-year break. President Wendell Wodwin: “Our Athletic Director, Matt Cole, has been working hard to reinstate our Golf Program. The donor/stakeholder support has been critical to our decision and our partnership with Oak Hills Country Club made today possible."(link)

Student-athletes are reporting fewer mental health concerns than they did during the height of the pandemic, according to the NCAA Student-Athlete Health and Wellness Study. In men's sports, the biggest drops occurred in constantly feeling overwhelmed (down from 25% to 17%) and being mentally exhausted (down from 22% to 16%). Among women's sports participants, reported mental health concerns were also down in nearly every category, but the decreases were smaller in comparison: 44% of women's sports participants reported feeling overwhelmed (down from 47%), and 35% reported feeling mentally exhausted (down from 38%). When responding to questions regarding their comfort in talking to their coaches about mental health issues, 40% of women's sports participants and 54% of men's sports participants said they would feel comfortable doing so. Those numbers were lower (a decrease of 9 percentage points for women's sports and 8 points for men's sports) than reported in pre-pandemic studies. As it pertains to health and safety educational training, 42% of men's sports athletes and 47% of women's sports athletes reported receiving bystander intervention training. NCAA CMO Brian Hainline: "As schools continue to improve their mental health care services while fostering an environment of well-being, student-athletes will continue to reap the benefits of wellness and mental health care seeking. That being said, we need to understand better the gap in perceived mental health concerns between men and women student-athletes." More from the study. (link)
