HCAC Commissioner Jay Jones joins The Add/Drop Podcast to discuss challenges leading the HCAC, conference expansion and his journey as a leader. When Jones took the HCAC position four years ago, he recalled his previous experience leading a DII conference, noting: “I didn't think I had done the job in my way, I lost my personality a little bit. I didn't do it in a service based way and so when I took this job, it was a chance to say, ‘Hey, culturally, stay true to yourself. Understand that you can be a leader,’ and part of that was just professional maturity and age. But the other part was, ‘Hey, it's a second time to do it.’” Of all of the challenges during his tenure, Jones pinpointed the loss of former Assoc. Commissioner/SWA Stacey LaDew when she became commissioner of the SAA as the most significant, given the small staff and personal relationship the two had developed in the years working together. U.S. Justice Department Antitrust Division Asst. Attorney General Jonathan Kanter explains to the Wall Street Journal’s Emily Glazer how the DOJ could become involved in the antitrust issues facing college sports: “The NCAA and the antitrust case went all the way to the Supreme Court. It established or reaffirmed an important objective of antitrust law, which is that it’s not just to protect what consumers pay, it’s to protect all stakeholders in an economy. If student-athletes are being deprived of valuable compensation because of an antitrust violation, that is a cognizable and actionable antitrust harm. This is an issue that we addressed in one of our cases involving a book-publisher merger, Penguin Random House/Simon & Schuster. We went to court to challenge that transaction and we won. The theory of harm wasn’t that book prices were going to go up. The theory of harm was that professional authors, people who research and write books for a living, were going to get less. The court upheld our merger challenge based on harm to authors just as the Supreme Court upheld an antitrust challenge based on harm to student-athletes.” (link)

+ Costs for U.S. colleges and universities rose 4% during FY23, according to data from the annual Commonfund Higher Education Price Index. It’s the second-highest rate of inflation since FY08, when the HEPI was at 5%. Costs increased 4.5% at private institutions compared to 3.8% at public institutions. (link)

The Consumer Price Index rose 3.1% for the 12 months ending in November, down from 3.2% in October, with gas prices falling 6% last month. As inflation continues to cool, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen believes the U.S. will achieve a soft landing and avoid a recession. “[Inflation is] certainly meaningfully coming down. And I see no reason, on the path that we’re currently on, why inflation shouldn’t gradually decline to levels that are consistent with the Fed’s mandate and targets. I personally don’t see any good reason to think that the last mile is going to be especially difficult. … Because inflation expectations had never meaningfully ratcheted up on a long-term basis, we just had to have the economy normalize and get the labor market back to a sort of full employment state to bring inflation down.” (link); Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell: “While we believe that our policy rate is likely at or near its peak for this tightening cycle, the economy has surprised forecasters in many ways since the pandemic and ongoing progress. Progress toward our 2% inflation objective is not assured.” (link)
