Transfer Tension…
+ The NCAA today walked back its interpretation of yesterday’s transfer policy ruling by U.S. District Court Judge John P. Bailey and tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich it is now unsure whether student-athletes who play following the ruling would burn a year of eligibility if the ruling is overturned. Due to the suspension of the restitution rule, the NCAA yesterday indicated eligibility would not be impacted. Christovich: “The NCAA, which was unable to provide an interpretation of its own rules, has now further complicated an already extremely confusing situation for athletes and coaches across the country. Some athletes are in a holding pattern while they wait for clarity. Others have already played since Wednesday’s ruling, and could lose eligibility because of the NCAA’s lack of a firm stance. … As the college basketball season heats up and bowl season kicks off, the consequences of the NCAA’s unclear positions could be dire.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the NCAA has since provided clarity, and a student-athlete who competes in a game over the next 14 days will, in fact, lose a season of eligibility if the court’s ruling is reversed. From an NCAA Q&A: Question: Does the season of competition legislation apply if a student-athlete competes during the 14-day TRO?” Answer: “Yes. The 14-day TRO only enjoined Bylaw 14.5.5.1 and does not change the season of competition legislation.” The Q&A also indicates a first-time transfer sitting out a year because they transferred after the window closed can compete during the TRO. Dellenger: “Some have misinterpreted the restitution rule & eligibility issue. (1) Judge suspended restitution rule, which prevents NCAA from punishing school/athlete for playing if ruling is reversed. (2) If ruling is reversed & an athlete has played, he/she has used a season of eligibility. An important note here: Like any NCAA decision/rule around an active court case, the judge will have an interpretation in this matter.” (link)

AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit he “won’t look back” once he retires but will continue to work on bridging the gap between the AAC and the Power 5 while he’s still in the role. “Maybe that is just not realistic, but you fight for it anyway. I hope my successor continues the big fight, because it is worth it—it is worth it for these student-athletes. … It probably will be harder, only because the money it will take will be greater. We are about to embark on another arm’s race, just a different kind of arm’s race…but we’ve got schools that are going to be able to do that – they are going to have to struggle a bit, but are going to be able to do it.” For the next six months, Aresco says he will continue fighting for the league, but once he officially steps down, “I really do want to call it a day. I don’t want to be hovering over my successor. I think I owe it to my wife and family to wind down and have some fun.” (link)

LCU is a standard-bearer for Christ-centered athletics, and Andrew has the ability to grow that influence even more to build on the rich legacy of this place.” (link)

Arizona SVP/CFO Lisa Rulney has resigned in the wake of the university’s financial crisis, and the Arizona Board of Regents yesterday approved several measures to correct the situation, including implementing a hiring and compensation freeze and eliminating tuition guarantees for new students beginning in fall 2025. ABOR also approved plans to adopt additional financial management and reporting oversight, implement monthly budget reviews, increase transparency, and centralize administrative services in IT, HR, communications and marketing, and advancement. The university will also freeze international employee travel, defer nonessential capital projects and conclude strategic initiatives funding. President Robert Robbins acknowledged the role athletics plays in the overall picture. “Athletics is the most difficult part of the university’s budget. I also believe that athletics is a core part of the University of Arizona and a key element to our long-term success. I have had many great meetings with the athletic department and we are committed to putting together a multi-year plan to bring their budget into balance.” ABOR Executive Director John Arnold will take over as UA’s interim CFO/VP of Business Affairs. ABOR has also asked Robbins to hire outside experts to overhaul the university’s budgeting and controls. (link, link)

Playfly Sports is unifying its branding by creating four core divisions of business: Playfly Media, Playfly Sports Properties, Playfly Global Partnerships and Playfly Tech. SBJ’s Ethan Joyce: “This move will turn the branding of acquired companies – such as Home Team Sports, which Playfly bought as a three-division purchase from Fox Sports in 2021, and The Aspire Group, purchased earlier this year – into a unified offering.” Playfly CEO Michael Schreiber: “We still now use some of those ingredient brands as products, but ultimately we’re now at the corporate level a branded house. It’s what I would call a maturity moment for us.” (link)

USA Today’s Nancy Armour takes a look at volleyball’s sustained growth nationwide and notes the “number of high school girls playing volleyball has grown by almost 12% in the last decade and, with 470,488 players last year, is the second-most popular sport, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations participation survey.” Boys’ volleyball, meanwhile, is the fastest-growing high school sport in the country. While the grassroots growth continues to work its way upward, Armour points out the sport at the college level continues to benefit from broadcasters recognizing its appeal. “The Big Ten Network, SEC Network, ESPN and Fox are not only airing more volleyball, they’re putting it in windows where it will draw big numbers. Both Final Four matches Thursday will be on ESPN on Thursday night. The championship game will be on ABC on Sunday afternoon.” Florida HC Mary Wise: “I don’t know if the sport can truly grow without television. The people that are making decisions are advocates for the sport. They see the value.” Wisconsin HC Kelly Sheffield believes the sport should embrace its individual stars as part of its growth. “We look at ourselves as the ultimate team sport…and I think we’ve been a little bit leery about elevating certain people. But we need to get past that as a sport and bring personalities out to the forefront. Because personalities stir passion and personalities stir attention.” (link)

Accordingly, Intersport and Fox are partnering to host a Labor Day volleyball showcase next season featuring Minnesota, Stanford, Texas and Wisconsin at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Wisconsin will take on Texas and Stanford will play Minnesota on September 1, and matchups the following day will feature Wisconsin-Stanford and Texas-Minnesota. Two of the four matches will be broadcast on Fox with the other two appearing on FS1. Intersport VP Mark Starsiak: “There is an obvious growing appetite for the sport of volleyball, evidenced by roaring attendance numbers and record-breaking television ratings. It will be an incredible sight to help further amplify the sport with an elite early season showcase on network television.” (link, link)

UT is seeking to engage a Master Developer to develop, finance, operate, and maintain the mixed-use assets along the Tennessee River waterfront near Neyland Stadium through a public-private partnership in which the Developer would ground lease University-owned land.
