Sul Ross State officially announces that it has applied to move to DII and join the Lone Star Conference. AD Workman: “If we are admitted to Division II, we can start making scholarship offers, and I can’t think of a better investment in someone’s education. We’ll be attracting more students who will be able to continue to participate in sports after high school because, and there will be a value add at Sul Ross State. It makes us more competitive on the field and we believe it will increase enrollment and augment retention efforts. Ultimately, our goal is to have all student-athletes graduate with a degree from SRSU.” Of note: “One of the conditions is an earmarked pool of $250,000 for athletic scholarships. Saving on the expense of travel will help to offset those costs, as will a minimal increase in the athletic fee, along with the expected higher enrollment. However, said Workman, most of that cost is expected to be generated by fundraising efforts.” (link)

Pfeiffer AD Lafferty announces her resignation. President Bullard: "In terms of her overall tenure as athletic director, Ms. Lafferty's leadership through a period marked by unprecedented change – including a change in NCAA divisions and a global pandemic – required a great deal of agility, persistence, and creativity. And, perhaps what I will remember most is that, as the pandemic came to a close, in summer strategic planning sessions in 2021, Ms. Lafferty unveiled a presentation related to the future of athletic facilities at Pfeiffer that helped set a vision for the future and, I believe, will ultimately impact the university for the remainder of the decade – if not the century." The NCAA has retained Endeavor to consult on its next round of media rights talks, per SBJ’s Smith, who notes negotiations with current rightsholder ESPN are expected to unfold late this year. Smith adds: “The NCAA will first negotiate with its incumbent, ESPN, and then go to the open marketplace if they don’t agree to terms. The NCAA, sources said, anticipates a sizable increase on these rights fees because it has been 12 years since these rights were negotiated.” (link)

NCAA SVP of Administration/CFO Morris joins D1.ticker/Connect's Fischer at the NCAA Convention to discuss his new role, how his past experiences prepared him for this opportunity, revenue diversification and more. In discussing the NCAA’s top priorities, Morris says it cannot continue to operate in such a litigious environment and acknowledges the need for congressional intervention. “We need help with declaring student-athletes are not employees and then also making sure that we have preemption over the state laws. I think that’s very important so we have a broad, national regulatory framework where everybody can operate under. … I think we also as an association need to think about what scope of services we provide and who are we and who do we want to be as members.” Regarding revenue diversification, Morris explains current opportunities include bundling championship media rights packages differently while future opportunities revolve around the association’s utilization of data. “I got here and learned that we have millions of active records of our fans and that we don’t know much about them. I think that’s an opportunity for us. How can we connect with our former student-athletes? I think there are so many opportunities there, and I’m excited to build that foundation so we can engage and we can learn about what people want and deliver that.” The full conversation is now live on Connect. Union is "exploring alternatives to Dutchmen/Dutchwomen" moniker and asking for community input. Further: "Discussions with students, faculty, staff and alumni over the past few months have confirmed a lack of strong affinity for Dutchmen and Dutchwomen. With that in mind, we are inviting members of the Union community to help us take full ownership of a future nickname that represents Union in a creative and positive fashion. We welcome your ideas for a future nickname and plan to be transparent as we work through this process. Our hope is to unveil the nickname before the start of the 2023-2024 academic year in September." (link)

+ NYU opened its $1.2B (!) 735K square-foot John A. Paulson Center, which will be the home for MBB, WBB, VB, Fencing and Wrestling. The new court can seat up to 2K, with a new strength training center, Hall of Fame gallery and more. Averett announces the addition of MVB for the upcoming academic year as the Cougars’ 22nd varsity NCAA sport, with help from a major gift from Averett Ascending campaign leaders Richard and Jean Wright. WVB HC Earls will lead the upstart program which will compete as an independent. AD Stevens: "As we have researched sports expansion, it became clear that men's volleyball was the correct fit at this time given its growth at the NCAA Division III level and how that could align within the future of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. UMass Dartmouth FB HC Robichaud retires after 16 seasons leading the Corsairs and will be succeeded by AC Sylvester. AD Hendricks: “Mark Robichaud's commitment to his team members' personal growth and development is the gold standard. I watched him teach and instruct young men not just in the sport of football, but also in the game of life. It is a high bar that has been set for Coach Sylvester and I have no doubt that he will build on Coach Robichaud's success to write the next chapter of Corsair football.” (link)

Anderson removes the interim designation from MBB HC Collins who has led the Ravens to a 12-7 start to the season. AD Taylor: "The way Carter assumed leadership of the program as the interim, garnering respect of the student-athletes, guiding the team thus far to the top of the conference standings, while also effectively managing the off-court duties that come with being a head coach, he has earned the position of head coach. Unbeaten Transylvania WBB and HC Fulks get the profile treatment from the Lexington Herald-Leader, in which Fulks’ background in neuroscience and how it shapes her approach is explored. Fulks: “It really came about as a communication piece when I first started. [...] That was clearly a deficit I was seeing. Varsity Brands has agreed to settle one of the three federal antitrust lawsuits that have been filed against the cheerleading company, Sportico’s Libit reports. The lawsuit accused Varsity and the U.S. All Star Federation, a Varsity-created governing body, of colluding on an “exclusionary scheme” that stifled competition and violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. Attorneys for Varsity informed the judge they are in the process of preparing a settlement agreement they will submit to the court. Varsity President Seely indicated that the decision to reach a settlement was motivated, in part, by the “momentum” that arose from the USOPC’s recognition of USA Cheer, the Varsity-backed national governing body, as well as the NCAA’s decision to grant STUNT emerging status at the DII level. + The Federal Student Aid ombudsman fielded nearly 90K complaints in 2022, more than double the previous year, per Inside Higher Ed, which notes that nearly two-thirds of the complaints concerned student loan issues. Also from the ombudsman’s report: “At each stage of the student aid lifecycle, the higher education finance model disproportionately fails families of color. Collectively, these failures perpetuate disparities in student and borrower outcomes and may ultimately widen the racial wealth gap. If policymakers wish to restore the promise of higher education and the pathway to the middle class for all, they should examine the student loan safety net through an equity lens and consider expanding existing programs to ensure more equitable outcomes for student loan borrowers.” (link)

WorkLife’s Pickup outlines the case for “re-recruiting” current employees in 2023, citing the results from Microsoft’s global hybrid work survey, which found that two-thirds of employees would stay longer at their companies if it were easier to switch jobs internally. “Additionally, 76% of respondents would remain with their employer if they could benefit more from learning-and-development support... Without chances to develop, 68% of business decision-makers would not hang around. Worryingly, 55% of all employees reckoned the best way for them to learn or enhance skills would be to change employers.” Microsoft Product Marketing Leader Leigh-Bowler: “It’s a powerful message. There is a clear connection between learning and retention; if you prioritize learning and development support, employees will be more likely to stay with your company.” Stack Overflow CEO Chandrasekar adds: “The current macroeconomic climate, along with the pressing need for continued tech transformation, will serve as a forcing function that resets organizations’ approach to upskilling and skills development.
