SUNY Cortland won its first Football national championship in an electric 38-37 win. HC Curt Fitzpatrick to the ESPNU broadcast after the win: “It means everything. I was over there talking to the officials on the sideline, asking if we can kneel it out. We just wanted the clock to hit zero. It’s just amazing. […] (The victory) hasn’t sunken in yet, but it’s going to be a fun bus ride back home (to Cortland).” AD Mike Urtz telling the Cortland Voice: “I think the greatest thing about this is how much it motivates our other programs, our coaches, our other athletes because when you come to Cortland, you know that a national championship, it’s hard to do, but it’s actually doable here. NCAA President Charlie Baker talks with HBCU Gameday’s Tolly Carr and says after meeting with each HBCU conference, there are three things that need to be done: “Number one, we need to help them stoke their fan bases. This is one of the biggest things I think we need to do for all of our colleges, which is to do more because of our scale to create fan bases and grow the fan bases because at the end of the day the fan base is what creates excitement and what creates brand and that's what everybody's looking for here. The second is I think we can help them with the cost of what they pay for stuff. You know, we've never really tried to create a purchasing collaborative as an organization, and yet we have 1,100 members, they buy a ton of the same stuff. We can save everybody 10, 15, 20% of what they pay for all the products. …. It’s real money that they could turn around and invest in other things. And I think the third thing we could do is be flexible on how we think about the way these organizations need to operate, what divisions they want to be in, what sports they want to be part of, and to recognize that the standard way of doing stuff historically just isn't going to work going forward.” Baker added on the work of HBCU commissioners in D.C.: “(CIAA (DII) Commissioner) Jacqie McWilliams and I have talked quite a bit about this, and I personally believe that the HBCUs have as much influence or more as virtually anybody else who goes down there and talks to people. Their voices really matter. I could feel a change in some of the conversations I was having with people in the House and the Senate after the HBCU use paid visits down there, and I guess it’s up there from here. Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Jeanne Shaheen (R-N.H.) sent a letter this week to the NCAA pushing for flag football programs to be added to the collegiate lineup ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker, in part “Recently, the Olympic Committee announced that flag football will be an official Olympic sport at the summer 2028 games. This welcomed news serves as a prime opportunity for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to encourage its participating colleges and universities to offer women’s flag football as an emerging sport. … With this growing sport, and its benefits to women, the Olympic Committee’s announcement is timely. The NCAA should use this opportunity to proactively educate and encourage its schools to formalize programs. This in turn would allow collegiate women scholarship opportunities and serve as a feeder to the Olympics where they can proudly represent their country and school.” (link)

Michigan (DI) Concussion Center Director Dr. Steven Broglio talks with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker about the recent “Concussion Exposure and Suicidal Ideation, Planning, and Attempts Among US High School Students” article which appeared recently in a special mental health issue of the Journal of Athletic Training. Broglio and Banker dive into the findings of the article, including whether a greater proportion of male or female athletes reported one or more concussions last year and other key takeaways for college administrators and coaches. Broglio advises talking with suicide experts about specific behaviors to be on the lookout for, but notes that in his role as an athletic trainer he keeps an eye out for individuals who are withdrawn from the team. “That’s one of the strengths of an athletic trainer is they tend to know the athletes very well. They get to know them on a one-on-one basis, and we're trying to sort of spot those irregularities and then be in contact with our supervising physician or other healthcare providers that can help with that situation.” Check out the full Q&A on an important topic on Connect. Bloomberg News’ Nic Querolo, Danielle Moran and Marie Patino dive into the challenging economics facing small colleges and identified five metrics to “identify increasing pressures on higher-ed institutions through 2021,” with around 170 meeting at least three criteria. Those metrics: three-year average acceptance rate over 80%; three-year average yield rate below 20%; three consecutive years of falling full-time enrollment, losing at least 10%; three straight years of growing institutional aid to students, up at least 10%; and three consecutive years of operating losses. The research of 973 schools found five with all five metrics as of 2021 that are still open. Wittenberg President Michael Frandsen, whose institution meets all five: “You have an industry with falling demand and overcapacity. We would be foolish to expect anything other than consolidation and shakeout. […] Every time I get together with presidents, more and more of us are talking about struggles. It’s real, and people who are in denial about it are going to have a real problem.” Willamette officials pushed back against the data, pointing to the challenging pandemic period and enrollment and financial growth, with VP for Enrollment William Mullen noting: “When most of our competitors were cutting programs and budgets, Willamette’s strong financial position allowed us to invest in important new initiatives.” Lots more.
