Volleyball is booming. Friday night’s NCAA Tournament semifinals averaged 1.1M viewers on ESPN, a 52% uptick compared to last year. The semis also set a record for the most-attended indoor match at 19,598. Today’s Nebraska-Texas national title tilt (3pm EST on ABC) will look to continue the sport’s momentum. Sportico’s Asli Pelit dives into the emergence of three pro leagues that are building upon the surging popularity of the college game - Athletes Unlimited, which was launched in 2021, League One Volleyball (LOVB), which is set for its first season next year, and the Professional Volleyball Federation (PVF), with its first campaign set to begin just a little more than a month from now. Athletes Unlimited co-Founder & CEO Joe Patricof: “Advertisers are starting to realize that there’s a huge, passionate audience here. And ultimately, it’s the advertiser interest that will drive greater coverage. [...] The future of volleyball right now has never been brighter. When you get a virtuous cycle where the creation of more opportunities for pros to play leads to more pros playing, which leads to more advertiser interest, which leads to more media coverage, which leads to better television. And it all fuels one another.” Lots more. (link, link)

New Mexico State Football HC Jerry Kill says New Mexico tried to deny the Aggies practice field time ahead of last night’s Isleta New Mexico Bowl. Kill: “It's a great bowl game, but here's the deal: They were going to make us practice on a high school field and let Fresno (State) practice in the indoor, and that particular day, it snowed. But [New Mexico Bowl Executive Director] Jeff [Siembieda] busted his butt and had to argue with their people to get us on the thing.” Kill added “I hope the AD here [Eddie Nuñez] gets the same damn discipline with the people around this state that Diego got, because he deserves it. It don't bother me a damn bit. When he don't let us ... practice in the indoor facility, when he don't want us to do this and do that, that's chickens---. I don't care, that's my opinion, if I get in trouble, I don't give a s---, either. Because I can go down to Mexico tomorrow, drink margaritas and let you all enjoy your life, because I'll be enjoying mine. But I've got class. I've had class my whole life.” (link)

Central Michigan AD Amy Folan sat down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz from the 2023 Women Leader’s Convention to discuss the Chippewas’ uptick in football attendance, changes to the transfer window, how she approaches burnout with staff, determining fit when hiring at CMU and more. Folan also talks about the growing resource gap and how to close it. “Gaps are getting bigger with all the conference realignment, but I think it's always been the challenge, and the MAC has had great consistency and continuity. We're in a great geographic footprint, we're probably as strong and stable as they come, so I think what we try to do is do what we do well. … I'm excited that we're in the Big Ten footprint, and I think that our value to the ecosystem is proven. So, we keep trying to demonstrate and make sure that everybody understands. … If we don't own our brand and our story, it can get lost.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Michigan State paid TurnkeyZRG $80K to assist in its football coaching hire that landed Jonathan Smith as the leader of the Spartans. By comparison, this was $20K less than MSU paid DHR International to place former HC Mel Tucker in 2020. TurnkeyZRG’s placement of Smith was priced on top of an existing deal that MSU AD Alan Haller struck with the search firm, to serve as the athletic department’s “talent management” consultant at a cost of $4K/month. The retainer agreement comes with a 12-month warranty on Smith if he is terminated within a year for “any reason other than reorganizations, elimination of position, takeover or material change in job responsibility or direct supervisor.” Again, for comparison, DHR’s guarantee on Tucker was for two years, and lapsed in January 2022. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has the rundown of bowl bonuses for football coaches. Ohio’s Tim Albin ($30,150), Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire ($25K) and App State’s Shawn Clark ($20K) were the only ones to add to their earnings yesterday. (link)

LSU becomes the ninth college baseball partner of Uplift Labs. The Tigers will be the first, however, to use Uplift’s markerless motion capture assessments, which, using two iPhones or iPads, can analyze an athlete’s movement patterns and sport-specific motions. More than one-third of MLB clubs use the technology as well, according to SBJ’s Joe Lemire. (link)

According to a meta-analysis conducted by researchers from Buffalo, one in 10 college students is a pathological gambler, far higher than the 2-5% of the U.S. general population estimated to have a gambling problem, according to Time’s Oliver Staley, who adds: “Other studies place the number of student gambling addicts lower, but still higher than the overall population of pathological gamblers.” Staley points out the behavior on college campuses isn’t limited to sports betting and also includes ETF trading, cryptocurrency trading and other forms of gambling. The common denominator among all these behaviors are mobile phones. Psychiatrist James Sherer: “You don’t have to go to a casino, you don’t have to go to a bank, you don’t need to carve time out of your schedule, you can do it at work, you can do it in the middle of the night.” Meanwhile, TV ad spends for gambling sites have increased from $197M for all of 2021 to $305M through November of this year and Sherer notes: “Because of the way advertising works these days, even if you are trying to avoid it, you are going to be served up more options and opportunities to re-engage in that behavior than if you were someone who never engaged in that behavior in the first place.” (link)

Michigan Concussion Center Director Dr. Steven Broglio talks with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker about the recent “Concussion Exposure and Suicidal Ideation, Planning, and Attempts Among US High School Students” article which appeared recently in a special mental health issue of the Journal of Athletic Training. Broglio and Banker dive into the findings of the article, including whether a greater proportion of male or female athletes reported one or more concussions last year and other key takeaways for college administrators and coaches. Broglio advises talking with suicide experts about specific behaviors to be on the lookout for, but notes that in his role as an athletic trainer he keeps an eye out for individuals who are withdrawn from the team. “That’s one of the strengths of an athletic trainer is they tend to know the athletes very well. They get to know them on a one-on-one basis, and we're trying to sort of spot those irregularities and then be in contact with our supervising physician or other healthcare providers that can help with that situation.” Check out the full Q&A on an important topic on Connect. USA Today’s Josh Peter explores how AI might be used to help athletes beat drug tests, and MIT professor Manolis Kellis says the most feasible approach would be to use generative AI to alter existing PEDs that trigger drug tests and make them undetectable by current testing technology. Specifically, Kellis believes AI could be used to study molecular structure of the existing PEDs and determine what other molecules could be used to alter them. “I’m 100% sure that if they’re in that business (of doping), they’re using it. If I were in the doping business, I would be crazy not to use generative AI right now.’’ Hunter College professor Lei Xie says it’s possible such technology is being used right now because the process of altering PEDs is similar to that which already exists to alter drugs. “It is similar to drug repurposing (repositioning), which we have worked on for years.” Penn State College of Medicine Director of AI and Biomedical Informatics Dajiang Liu adds: “There is often a gap between the development of a new drug and testing procedures that can detect that. It is not surprising to me that such a gap would happen to new AI-enabled drugs. At the same time, AI-driven technologies will also accelerate the development of testing procedures to identify drug use.’’ (link)

SportsPro CEO Nick Meacham unpacks Netflix’s strategy to live sports following the company’s announcement that it would stream an exhibition tennis match between Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in March. “Why buy media rights when you can build your own assets? That seems to be the motto of Netflix when it comes to live sports. … To date they're leaning into assets that can provide supplementary marketing return for existing content i.e. documentary series. This provides a whole layer of additional value on top of the traditional acquisition or retention metrics most platforms would use. … Given the scale of their audience (245M+ global subscribers), they give something NO-ONE else can provide – unrivaled reach and scale for any event. If they do move into a new era of live sports rights acquisition, they'll likely play a different game re: traditional content acquisition and use their scale as a huge drawcard for those sports properties to leverage the reach for sponsorship over paying huge rights fees.” Meacham goes on to conclude this is “another nail in the coffin of traditional sports properties who believe historical value would be a greater drawcard to sports fans over the new influencer era of sports and entertainment that continues to be more prevalent globally. (Misfits, Kings League, Netflix events, etc). Ultimately I'm left wondering if the sports industry will be excited or worried about Netflix's approach. One thing is for sure, their approach to sports is picking up pace – fast.” (link)

Multiple-time transfers are free to compete through the spring semester without further concern about NCAA waivers, though the year of competition will count toward their eligibility, after an agreement between the NCAA & a coalition of states. Notable additional detail: “A hearing was to be held on Dec. 27 regarding a decision on issuing a preliminary injunction, but the NCAA’s agreement will likely result in the dismissal of that hearing, although official changes to the docket will have to be signed off on by the judge, and may not be formalized until Monday.” (link)

The Washington State Supreme Court denied a request to review the lawsuit between the outgoing Pac-12 schools & Washington State/Oregon State, meaning the Cougars & Beavers are effectively the only members of the Pac-12 board. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “What happens next is not immediately clear. The departing 10 could agree to a settlement after months of failed mediation. Perhaps one of the schools outside of Washington will pursue legal action in its own jurisdiction. During a court hearing in November, the defense raised the issue of dissolving the conference. Might that be a desperation move to regain leverage?” Also from Wilner: “Keep in mind that the lower court ruling requires WSU and OSU to act in reasonable manner with board matters ($$$). If they don't, this is headed back to court - and nobody wants that.” Wilner also notes that while it’s a big win for WSU & OSU, the liabilities of the league (ie House v. NCAA) are arguably more important to consider than the sizable revenues. (link, link); JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “The conference will generate $420 million in media-rights and postseason revenue this fiscal year. There’s roughly $170 million in future assets available, too. The 10 departing schools may have been told by consultants that they’d get 1/12th shares and dissolve the conference on the way out the door, but that went up in smoke on Friday. Now, they’re facing smaller distributions from the Pac-12, no control in the next seven months, and no parting gifts. Remember, the defecting schools took reduced distributions from their new conferences — 30 cents on the dollar in some cases. I’ll bet they hoped to supplement from what they planned to squeeze out of the Pac-12 on the way out the door. [...] I’m told that Washington State president Kirk Schulz and Oregon State’s Jayathi Murthy will meet, prioritize the issues, and hatch the plan for governance.“ (link)

Florida Gulf Coast AD Ken Kavanagh last month announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2023-24 school year, but the school revealed yesterday that Kavanagh is “moving on from the university.” Former FGCU President Mike Martin created a task force in February to find ways the Eagles could stay competitive in the current collegiate athletics landscape and one finding was that the department faced long-term financial struggles. A recommendation was to blend the athletics department into the larger university to create a workforce that could help both sides, but Martin indicated Kavanagh was not “entirely comfortable with that change.” Current FGCU President Aysegul Timur issued a statement to the university Friday that daily operations & responsibilities in athletics will continue to be handled by Deputy AD/COO/SWA Lauren Leister and Deputy AD/CRO Graham Diemer. FGCU still plans to launch a national search for the AD position and will announce more information in 2024. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines Lindenwood’s decision to cut nine sports, and Lions AD Jason Coomer explains that the downsizing of the athletic department was part of a university-wide effort to resize and rebalance other parts of the university. Specifically, Coomer cited a desire to rebalance the athletic department to be more in line with their new institutional peers in the Ohio Valley Conference. Coomer: “Even after dropping nine NCAA sports, we’re still the largest athletic department in the OVC,” which “speaks to the level of how we were overbuilt before. … When you’re growing enrollment via athletics, your expenses aren’t just salaries, scholarships and staff. For student-athletes, you have overhead in both the athletic department and the rest of campus, be that for academic instruction, or the daily needs of students. For non-student-athletes, athletic department overhead isn’t part of the operating budget equation.” More from Brown. (link)

McNeese State Men’s Basketball HC Will Wade is back on the sidelines & throwing haymakers at the NCAA: “There is a strong legal argument that these kids should not lose eligibility, and it goes to court? The kids will not lose eligibility. You never know anything for 100%, but this thing, December 27, the NCAA is toast anyway. They are going to get beat again on the 27th. It’s a moot point. They’ll get beat again and they’ll get beat again after that. … Legally, a lot of what the NCAA does is flat illegal, I’ve learned that through all of my stuff, through all this stuff, it just doesn’t. There is a reason they are trying to get antitrust exemption from Congress. They just need to blow the whole thing up and come back with a new model. They need to collective bargain with the players, it’s the only way they make this thing work. Until they do that, they’re just going to get smacked in court.” Lots more (link)

UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly during his LA Bowl presser: “The fact that there’s not going to be a Pac-12 next year, the fact that Washington State is not going to be in a conference next year, the fact that Oregon State is not going to be in a conference next year, we failed. [...] The players are what the product is. The fact that they don't get paid is really the biggest travesty.” Kelly went on to say SEC Commissioner, outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith, former Boise State/Washington Football HC Chris Petersen, former Duke/Ole Miss HC David Cutcliffe & former Stanford HC David Shaw should be assigned to get in a room & figure out the industry’s issues: “You guys go hash it out, then when you come out, we get a puff of white smoke, we’ll fix this whole thing.” (link)

Michigan Men’s Basketball HC Juwan Howard is set to return to lead the Wolverines as no discipline will be handed down in the situation involving Howard & Head Strength & Conditioning HC Jon Sanderson. UM AD Warde Manuel, in part: “The return of our usual coaching structure comes after a review of an incident involving several individuals during a team practice last week. Based on a thorough internal review, nothing was found to warrant disciplinary action for anyone involved. As such, we will move forward with a focus on our team and our season.” (link)

Purdue men’s basketball student-athlete and reigning unanimous POTY Zach Edey took advantage of three days the Boilermakers spent in his hometown of Toronto to capitalize on his NIL. As a native Canadian, Edey is prohibited from profiting from his NIL in the U.S. without jeopardizing his F-1 visa status. Edey, who teamed up with Daps on an NIL deal, tells USA Today’s Scooby Axson he wasn’t particularly concerned about cashing in on his NIL, but “now that I am getting paid, thinking back on it, it was ridiculous that we weren't getting paid. At the time, the only thing I was focused on was my basketball, as it is now." Edey’s management Priority Sports, ensured Edey wasn’t running afoul of immigration laws before moving forward with the deal with Daps, a New York-based startup that describes itself as “Shopify for athletes.” The app allows fans to bid live during games on game-worn shoes and jerseys, or on high-value items such as a signed painting and also get video calls and social media shoutouts. UMass Lowell has settled a lawsuit filed by former baseball student-athlete Cedric Rose, who alleged that he was dismissed from the team because he complained in his diary about former HC Ken Harring’s alleged racism. Monetary terms were not disclosed, but Rose’s attorney, Ed Burley, says: “They talked about operational changes in a few key areas. One of those areas is not having the authority in decision-making concentrated solely in the head coach.” A statement from UMass Lowell reads: “The matter that Cedric Rose raised to UMass Lowell’s attention has been satisfactorily resolved to the satisfaction of both Mr. Rose and UMass Lowell. UMass Lowell will continue to advance a campus climate in which equity, transparency, fairness, safety, and inclusion are valued so that all of its members — faculty, staff, and students — can fully engage and thrive.” (link)

Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Jeanne Shaheen (R-N.H.) sent a letter this week to the NCAA pushing for flag football programs to be added to the collegiate lineup ahead of the 2028 Olympics. The letter to NCAA President Charlie Baker, in part “Recently, the Olympic Committee announced that flag football will be an official Olympic sport at the summer 2028 games. This welcomed news serves as a prime opportunity for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to encourage its participating colleges and universities to offer women’s flag football as an emerging sport. … With this growing sport, and its benefits to women, the Olympic Committee’s announcement is timely. The NCAA should use this opportunity to proactively educate and encourage its schools to formalize programs. This in turn would allow collegiate women scholarship opportunities and serve as a feeder to the Olympics where they can proudly represent their country and school.” (link)

Nearly 80% of Americans surveyed in a new U.S. News-Harris Poll study believe higher education institutions are more worried about their endowment than creating leaders of tomorrow. The respondents indicate the biggest problem is that if colleges and universities don’t become more accessible to all people and emphasize diversity, then the leaders of tomorrow will all be the same. Meanwhile, more than 60% of those surveyed believe colleges and universities are prioritizing donors, press and other external factors over students. In regards to the Israel-Hamas war, two-thirds of Americans say they believe campuses should uphold free speech even if some deem the language deplorable, and 57% think that the entire issue is overblown since Palestinians are being harmed in the conflict as well. 63% believe that higher ed institutions aren’t handling antisemitism on campus effectively, and 60% believe that colleges and university presidents should be dismissed from their jobs.
