Oregon State and Washington State are poised to join the WCC as affiliate members in men’s and women’s basketball as well as other sports. The deal is expected to be finalized this week. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Particulars of the deal are unclear but there is expected to be a financial incentive package for the WCC. … Discussions among OSU, WSU and the WCC were centered on basketball as well as several Olympic sports, but according to the original proposal, baseball was not part of the package.” CBS’ Matt Norlander and Dennis Dodd add: “Industry speculation over the past two months centered around the idea that OSU and WSU would follow football's lead and eventually link with the Mountain West in all sports. But logistical and ongoing legal concerns have combined to make a move in basketball and non-revenue sports difficult at this time, sources said. In becoming de facto WCC members from July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2026, Oregon State and Wazzu will also compete for regular-season and postseason WCC titles. That means they're eligible for automatic-qualifier status for NCAA championship events, most notably basketball's NCAA Tournament.” (link, link)

Memphis city officials have begun allocating the $350M in state appropriations for renovations of athletic venues throughout the state, including Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The City Council yesterday approved the release of $120M specifically for Liberty Stadium. The $220M project will also be supported by a $50M pledge from FedEx Founder/Chairman Fred Smith and $50M raised through a Memphis fundraising campaign. (link); The council also voted to transfer ownership of Liberty Stadium to the university as part of a stipulation of Smith’s gift. As part of the agreement, the Tigers assured organizers of the Southern Heritage Classic and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl that the university wants those events to continue. A statement from the university reads: ““We are incredibly appreciative of the City Council for sharing our vision and voting to approve this resolution on Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, which will position our University and football program for sustained success. We look forward to working collaboratively in the coming weeks with the City administration, the Southern Heritage Classic, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and the USFL to formalize agreements that will set us all up for success into the future.” (link)

Princeton’s Men’s Lacrosse HC position will now be known as the William G. Tierney P01 P02 Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse in honor of the former longtime HC who retired after last season. Tigers AD John Mack: “Few coaches have ever impacted their sport the way that Bill Tierney has in men’s lacrosse. His legendary innovation and player development, combined with his sheer will, built one of the best dynasties that college lacrosse has ever seen, with six NCAA championships at Princeton and another at Denver. Those who played for him know full well how much they learned from him, as players and ultimately as young men, and they will almost to a man tell you that they wouldn’t be the people they are today had it not been for Coach Tierney.” (link)

Montana has launched an online fundraising campaign to send its marching band to the FCS Championship in Frisco, Texas. The Grizzlies are looking to raise $200K – roughly $2K per band member – for the trip. Marching Band Director Kevin Griggs: “The Grizzly Marching Band is thrilled to have the opportunity to perform on the national stage. The NCAA does not allocate any resources for marching band travel. The University has committed key support to cover numerous costs, but we know there are thousands of supporters of the Grizzly Marching Band across the country who want to be part of the movement to get the band to Texas.” (link)

The Department of Education has released details on the FAFSA rollout, noting that the previously announced December 31 deadline represented a “soft launch period,” during which officials will monitor for technical issues, field concerns from families and make last-minute tweaks. The department will also periodically pause the process to allow students already working on FAFSAs to continue doing so; however, new forms cannot be started. The department clarified that “full processing” of forms will not begin until late January. (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel unpacks UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly’s plan for a 64-team league and observes while parts of it make complete sense, other areas are less practical. For instance, Mandel wonders what incentive the Big Ten and SEC have to join forces with the ACC and Big 12. Kelly suggested the possibility of West Coast teams playing schools from different regions each year as part of the NFL-like model which matches different divisions each year, but Mandel writes: “Fox is paying you guys $65M a year to play Ohio State and Penn State, not Syracuse and Boston College.” He adds: “As I’ve written every couple of months for the past five years, when conference consolidation comes, the magic cutline won’t be 64; it will be 32 or less. It will be the very top brands that drive the overwhelming majority of the television value banding together. Especially once the courts inevitably rule that schools must share their revenue with the athletes and/or pay them a salary.” Mandel also believes it’s possible the college football calendar could be moved up due to the transfer portal and the lack of TV windows when the College Football Playoff and NFL playoffs coincide. “The obvious solution is to turn what is currently Week 0 into Week 1, move the conference championship games up to Thanksgiving weekend, and play both the first-round and quarterfinal rounds on campuses in December, so the semis and title game can remain where they currently are.” (link)

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish met this week to discuss a possible merger, according to Axios’ Sara Fischer, who reports the two discussed ways the companies could complement one another. “For example, each company's main streaming service — Paramount+ and Max — could merge to better rival Netflix and Disney+.” Fischer also notes it’s “unclear whether WBD would buy Paramount Global or its parent company, National Amusements Inc. (NAI), but a source familiar with the situation says that both options are on the table.” Also notable: “Executives are confident that the deal would receive regulatory approval, despite D.C.'s active antitrust climate,” as Fischer points out WBD doesn't own a broadcast network, creating a more tractable path than one with a company like NBC owner Comcast.
